Bush Is Time's 'Person of the Year'

The editors tapped Bush "for sharpening the debate until the choices bled, for reframing reality to match his design, for gambling his fortunes -- and ours -- on his faith in the power of leadership."

The details of the plan remain secret and are evolving, but indications of its scope and significance have begun to emerge in recent weeks. One part of the overall proposal is being drafted by a team led by Lt. Gen. William G. Boykin, a deputy under secretary of defense.

Among the ideas cited by Defense Department officials is the idea of "fighting for intelligence," or commencing combat operations chiefly to obtain intelligence.

"Bush Is Time's 'Person of the Year'"

Not necessarily a compliment. Supposedly they choose whoever they judged had most impact, not necessarily beneficial. Although they didn't pick Osama in 2001 for fear of public opinion. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Man_of_the_Year

No question Bush had big impact, right in the posterior end !

I haven't read Time magazine since the early 80s, when their reporting on the Iran/Contra scandal disgusted me. I won't even pick one up when I'm bored at the doctor's office.

Time is another corporate-owned and operated media entity with an agenda. There is not much in the way of perspective.

Just more of the same, spin, spin, spin, for image-control. "Sharpening" the debate? I mean, who really believes this? I--and nearly every intellectual I know--was EMBARRASSED of Bush during the debates. If sharpening has come to mean digressing, eluding and repeating ad nauseaum, then maybe there's some validity. A C-average student with a less than impressive intellect--sometimes I think I'll wake up and this will all be a bad dream.

I'm not defending Time. They are as you say. As for "sharpening the debate", I read it another way--I took "debate" as meaning all the discussion about the election, not the presidential debates, and I took "sharpening" it to mean increasing the contrast between the two sides, making the discussions more heated, and making people care about the outcome. It's easy enough to do that--you just have to have really extreme positions. And Bush certainly managed that.
