What's going on?

It seems that the world is crazy these days. We push forward with a war with Iraq. Our actions with North Korea look hauntingly similar to our actions towards Japan which instigated the attack at Pearl Harbor. We are arresting immigrants and visitors when they voluntarily show up at INS offices.

This doesn't look good and it doesn't bode well. What do you think?

Rite of Passage

How does one describe a "rite of passage", what does that look like? For a young boy, it might be getting his first 'real' haircut as a two year old or for a Jewish youth at the age of thirteen having a Bar/Bat Mitzvah, to usher them into adulthood, may be their first rite of passage. For young girls, it is typically the purchase of her first bra, or the onset of her menstrual cycle. In the West at least, along with many other examples, all of these would be considered normal rites of passage. But in Africa and parts of Asia there is a 'rite of passage' that is greatly misunderstood, has been sensationalized by the media, and condemned by feminists around the world. It is called, female genital mutilation or FGM, and for most of the West, it defies comprehension.

Just when you thought that surveillance couldn't get any more invasive along comes the Pentagon with a new plan - TIAS (Total Information Awareness System). This is a data miner which collects both personal commercial data and email and internet data on individuals. The SanFransico Chronicle ran the first report (I think). Here's the link to the article Pentagon plans cyber surveillance.

Guess we could have expected this if you have looked at either the Nuclear Posture Review info or the Quadrennial Defense Review (QDR). Both of these feature advanced intelligence components. Interesting that the Defense Department is targeting US citizens with TIA. If you know Spanish, that means aunt - wonder if there is any meaning in that. Instead of Big Brother we get Big Aunt? Maybe eavesdropping on "gossip" - well a bit sexist, but not beyond that male bastion the Pentagon. So what counts as Big Brother? Rumsfeld will have to duke it out with Ashcroft and Tenet for that one I guess.

Here's the link to the "SS Office" "IAO" programs and no I have no ideas what the initials stand for (of course it would be appropriately named the "SS" office) obviously the boys aren't too original.
SS Office IAO Programs on TIA. Bet this link disappears in a hurry if so, try this link - My TIA Mirror.

If you want a jolt, take a look at the home page while you are there (those of you into secret societies arcana IAO home page.

Hey!!!! Due to pressure from folks like us and environmental groups, the US NAvy has TEMPORARILY scaled back testing of LFA. Here is the text of the article from the NY Times 11/16/02

Navy to Limit Sonar Testing Thought to Hurt Sea Mammals
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 16 -- The Navy has agreed to scale back temporarily the testing of a new sonar system designed to detect enemy submarines.

The agreement was reached on Friday after months of protests by environmentalists and two weeks after a federal magistrate judge blocked the testing, citing concerns about marine life.

The accord is a compromise between the government and the ecologists who filed a lawsuit over the testing. It will last seven months while the Navy's operating permit is challenged in federal court.

Magistrate Judge Elizabeth LaPorte had already blocked the Navy from experimenting with the system, which was to be routinely tested throughout the world's oceans.

The Navy had planned to test the system in about 14 million square miles of ocean. Under the agreement, the Navy will limit its tests to about a million square miles of remote ocean around the Mariana Islands.

"It's the least sensitive area of ocean we could get," said Andrew Wetzler, an lawyer with the Natural Resources Defense Council, which says the Navy system can harass or kill marine mammals.

The sonar system can send signals hundreds of miles. It can be as loud as 215 decibels, as much noise as a twin-engine F-15 fighter jet makes when it takes off.

The agreement does not prevent the Navy from using the system to detect modern, quiet submarines in wartime, and it acknowledges that the Navy must be allowed to train with it.

Neither the Navy nor the Justice Department returned calls seeking comment. The judge ordered all discussions between the environmental group and the Navy to remain confidential.

The Natural Resources Defense Council said Navy sonar used in March 2000 may have caused at least 16 whales and 2 dolphins to beach themselves on islands in the Bahamas. Eight whales died, and scientists found bleeding around their brains and ear bones, injuries consistent with exposure to loud noise.

There seems to be a nasty trend

Well the hole seems to be getting deeper. This week's news has not left me smiling.

The Homeland Security Act passed and will most likely be law soon. This does not bode well for our Constitution. Even William Safire is yelling about the loss of privacy You are a suspect and the Time/UK publishes US to set up"big brother" citizen database

Dennis Kucinich (US Congressperson) let's the cat out of the bag about our role in Hussein using chemical weapons agains the Kurds The bloodstained path

Came across an older article about the plan to destroy Iraq's fresh water supplies through the sanctions from Gulf War 1 The secret behind the sanctions

The power companies are getting their monies worth from the Republican's and Bush E.P.A. says it will change rules governing industrial pollution (This article is in the NY Times.

There was also a report in the Times about Ashcroft's big win with the secret FISA tribunal of the Supreme Court which overturned an appeals court ruling that barred the Justice Department from using foreign intelligence surveillance rules for domestic investigations.

I keep waiting with baited breath for a huge outcry from the people, but so far there isn't much except from the usual suspects - a term that takes on a whole new meaning in light of the above.

I did a presentation this week on US Hegemony - our open claiming of our willingness to claim the empire. It examined the Nuclear Posture Review, the National Security Strategy of the U.S. - 2002, Total Information Awareness System, and the use of force against Iraq. If you are interested, it is available as a PowerPoint document at http://spot.pcc.edu/~rwolf/wolfwrite/hegemony_show.ppt

Enough for one post.

Homeland Security?

Well, President Bush signed the Homeland Security Act into law this week, and already it is hard at work protecting us. How you might ask?

Well for starters, it protects pharmaceutical companies from lawsuits for their vaccines. While the innocent public may have thought that this was for the small pox vaccine being prepared for distribution, its first use was to close the files on Eli Lily. You see there is an suit against EL for using mercury as a storage base for childhood vaccines, and a suit charging that this practice was known to cause a number of brain disorders in childre - autism chief among them. The lawyers had been getting documents under disclosure rules. Yesterday those files were sealed by HHS (Health and Human Services) under - guess what - the Homeland Security Act.

Then of course the HSA also has an intelligence component (TIA - see earlier post). Well "cyber security" got its first infusion of funds under the HSA (it has gotten funds earlier) of $900,000,000 (yeah- 900 million dollars).

And just when you thought an independent investigation of 9/11/01 was out the window, the Pres fielded a commission lead by none other than ... yep ... Kissinger - the one with a penchant for secrecy and US hegemonic power. But don't worry. The investigation is not focusing on OUR government, but on terrorists.

I sure feel safer now. Don't you?

Miranda Rights Update

Here is some info on Miranda rights from Erika

The issue about the Miranda rights has reached the Supreme Court. The fact that it's even being considered whether or not we should continue having the Miranda makes my stomach turn. It's just hard ot believe there's any controversy here, but there is and its very creepy.

"The blanket requirement for a Miranda warning to all suspects that they have the right to remain silent could end up in the rubbish bin of legal history if the court concludes police were justified in aggressively questioning the gravely wounded Martinez while he screamed in agony."

"A ruling that minimizes defendants' rights would be useful to the Bush administration, which supports Oxnard's appeal, in its questioning of terrorism suspects, experts said."
