How many times since the US invaded Iraq have you heard it justified because "the Iraqi's are better off." I'm sure I've heard that at least a thousand times in that last year. Well, according to the General Accounting Office Report to Congress (6/04 pdf), that just ain't so.

Well Cephalon has the drug for you ... at least according to the NY Times - NYT, Wakefulness Finds a Powerful Ally. In typical US mentality fashion, we respond to studies that show us a being massively sleep deprived, by finding a pill to wake us up.

The Pentagon announced today that it was issuing an involuntary recall of 5600 retired and discharged soldiers for (possible) service in Iraq and Afghanistan. Those being recalled to duty are known as the Individual Ready Reserve (IRR). The IRR is a "reserve" military pool of individuals who served less than eight years in the military. That "pool" of retired personnel has about 110,000 members (If you can't access this link try the UTJ permanent link), though the CNN report says there are 118,000 people in the IRR.

Well, I'm sure that everyone has heard that Viceroy Bremmer turned over the keys to to kingdom to Iyad Allawi today. Well, maybe not the keys, but papers anyway that transfer a "limited" sovereignty to the interim government. I wonder if Negroponte is on the ground in Iraq yet. But questions are being raised about Iraq's money. I raised this issue a few days ago in Who Has Power in Iraq, but now Christian Aid has issued a report - Fuelling suspicion: the coalition and Iraq's oil billions, claiming that almost $20 billion in Iraq funds are unaccounted for. Yes, this is an even higher amount of $11 billion that the UN has questioned.

It is so easy to forget that there is a long term history of energy interests in Afghanistan. Part of the reason is the ongoing promotion of the invasion of Afghanistan and the overthrow of the Taliban as a "just war". This is convenient because officialdom and their media lackeys can rightly claim "There is no oil in Afghanistan." True ... and not true. While Afghanistan apparently has little oil, it is getting a lot of interest for an oil pipeline.

They float to the surface, those bits of ripped rights, that used to form the foundation of a republic known as the United States of America. The often invisible teeth tearing at the belly of the nation are munching their way to the heart. Meanwhile, egregious disregard of law and right are flaunted in our faces. Which is worse, that which we see, or that which slips past us like thieves in the night?

What is this, you ask? Has rowan slipped a cog to start some poetic mystery novel? No, just a gut response to the flotsam of the day. Read on to find the new wounds to our sensibilities and rights.

Let's get moral shall we? As you all know, Bush & Co, as well as the Republicans, think that the way to end poverty is by teaching celibacy. The BBC reports that the Bush Administration has given $700,000 to a project called "The Silver Ring Thing" a project for young people who vow to abstain from sexual activity. It has been such a success in the US (over 1 million have taken the pledge) that the group has moved on to Britain. In true reverse effect style, the article cites an American study:

"The depressing reality is that abstinence education actually increases teenage pregnancies. An American study showed that nine out of 10 young people who took a sexual abstinence pledge went on to break it, and because they were so unprepared and guilty they were far less likely to use contraception."

So much for that (specious) causative link between sexual activity and poverty.

I am honored to have permission to post this work on Uncommon Thought, and offer my thanks to Marilyse Devoyault for the translation. I feel that this piece in particular offers important insights into the current merged neo-conservative / apocalyptic Christian political environment in the U.S. It also adds to our understanding of the context and meaning of the torture of "detainees" that has recently come to light

An anthropology able to analyse the politics and the history of our species, to the light of a scrutiny of its theological brain, will be an anthropology that will observe the move of imperial democracy in a new Andersen's tale where a naked king of the great Danish presents himself armed to the teeth. The anthropological psychoanalysis, therefore existential, drives to the discovery of an unconscious of grace trapped in advance by its fall in torture.

To lighten the eyes of political Europe, we need to precise how "Simiohuman" history tries to trace a demarcation line between reality and mythology, politics and Utopia.

In a number of states and in the American Congress, legislation is being advanced, usually under the deliberately misleading heading of the "consumer's right to know," to restrict the ability of companies and government agencies to use call centers abroad. The legislation is nothing less than the kind of non-tariff barrier so castigated by the same American legislators when one appears in another land. The legislation dangerously plays to the considerable xenophobia found in America.

Dear Friends and Comrades in Thought,
I have no heart for analysis today. We were jolted by the sound of chain saws and chippers somewhere nearby. Investigating, we saw that they were cutting a giant deodar cedar in the yard of the neighbor behind us. Hoping they were only pruning, we went to check it out. No, they were cutting it down because it was "in the way" of an addition the neighbor wanted to add to his house. We are heart sick at the loss. Could Things Get More Convoluted in Iraq?

Just when you would think that things couldn't get more convoluted in Iraq, they do. Let's just start with the Kurds in Northern Iraq. They were protected to some extent by the illegal no-fly zone during the 11 years of UN sanctions, but were raided by Turkey periodically because Turkey fears having the Kurds on its border. The Kurds were independent allies of the US during the invasion of Iraq. There have been fears that they would go their own way and perhaps fracture Iraq into at least two different states. Now the Kurds are pushing their territory, but are they doing it alone?

Dear Friends and Readers of Uncommon Thought Journal. I have a proposal for you. Dale Allen Pfeiffer has an article A Call for Action posted at From the Wilderness. In it he discusses the end of oil and how people can prepare to meet the upcoming change. He is requesting submissions to respond to the following question:"Given the conditions set forth in this paper, what measures can people of limited means undertake to ease their transition into a post-technological world?"

My proposal is that we generate a response and submit it collaboratively. Why? Because I feel that the question is not how "people of limited means" make it through this, but how we (collectively) survive. This belief requires a collective discussion. It requires community.

Given its strutting brownshirt quality, here is a slogan that might well have been coined by America's most articulate political thug, Pat Buchanan.

But the slogan, with little waving-flag pictures, is being used for bumper stickers selling John Kerry. Good marketers know that you want an offering for every niche, so here's Kerry for the belly-over-the-belt, beer-belching, walrus-mustache set.

Niche marketing also explains goofy pieces about Kerry's military service versus that of Republican chicken hawks (for those unfamiliar, "chicken hawks" is an informal American political term for men who never fought yet advocate sending others off to war, a group largely, but not exclusively, consisting of Republicans). Never mind the moral obtuseness of opposing an armchair-psychopath like Bush with arguments in favor of a man who did his own killing, there's a weird market niche out there to be reached.

It seems clear at this point that the torture policy goes to the Oval office, even as investigations work their way up from the bottom of the hierarchy. I did my best to not watch the 24-7 coverage of the spectacle that the death and funeral of President Reagan had become. I was pleased to see that the family eulogies dealt with the man and not the politician. In the end we are all the people we are, not the jobs we do. There was an amazing moment when Ronald Reagan Jr. spoke. He spoke of his father's spiritual feelings, and offered a stunning rebuke to Bush and compnay:

"Dad was also a deeply, unabashedly religious man. But he never made the fatal mistake of so many politicians wearing his faith on his sleeve to gain political advantage. True, after he was shot and nearly killed early in his presidency, he came to believe that God had spared him in order that he might do good. But he accepted that as a responsibility, not a mandate. And there is a profound difference."

"Poor supervision and training", I'm getting sick of this particular excuse. Aren't you? US troops, raiding and stealing, abuse of detainees, general "bad behavior" ... the refrain of what the problem is? Those troops lacked supervision, or they had poor (or no) training. Excuse me? In the US military they have poor supervison and training? How can this be? Both of those are things the military is known for. Has something critical "broken" in the military? If so, why isn't being talked about? Or is it just a flippant excuse. The most recent "lack of supervision and training" comes in regards to sexual assaults among military personnel (Wa. You just knew that it had to happen, right? Antidepressant Seen as Effective in Treatment of Adolescents (NYT, 6/02/04). There has been so much negative news about antidepressants over the last six months starting with Antidepressant Makers Withhold Data on Children (Wa. Post, 1/29/04). Now, why were they witholding data? Antidepressant Use by Moms-To-Be May Affect Baby (Reuters, 2/02/04), followed by Nearly one-fifth drop out of Lilly antidepressant drug trial after participant's suicide (AP, 2/12/04), followed by Antidepressant use way up in U.S. kids, report says (Reuters, 4/02/04), followed by Antidepressant Use in Children Soars Despite Efficacy Doubts (Wa. Post, 4/18/04), followed by Damaging Drug Study? Bury It (Wired, 4/22/04). There was also an interesting editorial by Alexander Cockburn - Anti-Depressants a Problem? We're Shocked! (CounterPunch, 4/03/04).

So, one might expect the drug companies to fight back after all this bad press. So my recommendation - read a bunch and ask alot of questions before you dose your kids (or yourself) with antidepressants. The flurry of negative reports did start with pharmaceutical companies suppressing research data that was important for evaluating the drugs.

p.s. These are only sources that I posted on Uncommon Thought News. I'm sure there were probably others.

"Private corporations are now marketing identification systems based on personal and unique "biometrics" like eye scans or fingerprints."
