Resource for the Debate

By Rowan Wolf

Well get out your shovels and your hip boots, Bush and Kerry have their first debate tonight at 9pm EST. I image the rhethoric , distortions, distractions, hyperbole, and outright lies will fly thick and fast. A resource I would recommend (actually, another UTJ comrade has also recommended) is FactCheck.org. You can also sign up to have their reports and updates since to your email account.

FactCheck is non-partisan and do a good job tracking lies and distortions - on both sides. Feel free to share other resources in the comments to this post.

"Call To Action" Update

By Rowan Wolf

For all of you who participated in creating our collaborative submission to Dale Pfeiffer's "Call to Action" the Surviving Peak Oil site is now up and running. All of the articles, including our contribution Community is Necessary to Survival are available on the site. I am looking forward to reading the other contributions.

The site offers a number of resources. It has links to pertinent news articles, and an interesting resource list. There is a "Grits" newsletter you can subscribe to which will provide alerts, and event information.

I encourage you to help get the site off the ground and continue the dialogue by visiting Surviving Peak Oil. There is comment capability on the articles that form the basis of the site.

Once again, kudos to all of you who contributed. I'm proud that our work has a place in what looks like an excellent collection. It is amazing what can happen when we work together. Both our submission and Surviving Peak Oil are testimonies to that.

A New Take on Eminent Domain

By Rowan Wolf

The Supreme Court has agreed to hear a case that may totally reframe the law of "eminent domain". Eminent Domain allows a government to take private property (with compensation) for the public good or public use. The case that will come before the Court is whether a government can take private property and turn it over to private developers.

Saddam May Run for President

Well wouldn't this be a true irony if Saddam Hussein runs for President of Iraq and Wins? Outrageous you say? Well according to Zaman Online, Saddam is planning to Declare his Candidacy for the Iraqi Elections (thanks to Information Clearing House for this one). Given what has been going down in Iraq, a number of Iraqi's may feel a bit nostalgic about Hussein. It would be beyond ironic, if after the destruction of a nation and the deaths of tens of thousands that Iraq reelected Hussein.

There was, and still is, quite a flap about Dan Rather and CBS using "false" documents regarding Bush's "service" records. Personally, I believe that whole thing was a setup, and one has to ask about the pressure to air that story in light of what has happened since. Newsweek ran a story on 9/22 (via MSNBC) - Here's the piece that '60 Minutes killed for its report on the Bush Guard documents. The story that got "bumped" was a revealing investigation into the falsified "Niger" documents that the Bush team thrust in front of the world as the proof-positive of Hussein's nuclear program.

The Bush Administration Has A Cavilier Attitude Towards Democracy

The upcoming January election in Iraq has been making a lot of news. WIll it happen? Won't It Happen? Will it be endlessly "delayed" as Afghanistan's elections have been? This morning on the way to work I heard an announcement that the US has stated that they will not back any Iraqi candidate in the January elections. "Huh?" said I. This sounds like something straight out of the Bureau of Disinformation. The report went on that this was to be a "clean" election. I guess that means, not like the "interim" governments of Afghanistan and Iraq, or the "regime change" that occurred in Haiti, or the multiple attempts to overthrow Chavez of Venezuela (ad nauseum of recent manipulations).

Poverty Up; Welfare Down; Middle-Class Evaporates

For many the banner Poverty Up as Welfare Enrollment Declines looks like a conundrum. Most folks think that they are the same thing poverty=welfare. Those who don't see it as a major improvement - at least there are less folks "sucking off the system." The truth is that neither part of poverty up/welfare down is surprising.

It is not a big secret, though the family and its supporters have said it is fabrication. It's not, but I can hardly wait to see where this story goes - How Bush's grandfather helped Hitler's rise to power. No, this isn't some roaring rag spreading the news, it is The Guardian Unlimited in the UK.

One Way or Another They Will Get Their Database

The Bush administration is bound and determined to create the mother of all databases. It makes no difference that it would violate privacy rights. It makes no difference that it is unworkable and unmanageable. It makes no difference that they do not have the capability to make such data relevant or useful. The feds, through the vehicle of the Homeland Security Department and supporting legislation is ordering the airlines to release millions of passenger records by November. This order comes under the "Secure Flight" program which is the replacement for CAPPS II (which created massive resistance).

"Protected" Statutes?

US government is founded upon a separation of powers - executive, legislative, and judicial. This is called the "balance of powers." This division provides a check on any branch gaining undue power and unbalancing the system. So what do we make of our elected representatives making legislation that bars the courts from hearing certain constitutional issues? That is just what happened in the US Congress with the passage of legislation that bars the courts on hearing challenges to the Pledge of Allegiance.

Watching our elected representatives in action, I am getting deja vu of the legislative flurry after 9/11/01. When the public complained about things such as the U.S.A. P.A.T.R.I.O.T. Act, or giving Bush a blank check, or abdicating the Congress's Constitutional power to declare war, the Democrats' response, was that they didn't want to appear "unpatriotic." Now we are in a presidential election year, and one would think that the Dems would be showing some spine - differentiating themselves from Bush and the Republicans - apparently not.

US Intelligence Missed China Subs

When I saw this headline - China's new submarines caught U.S. intelligence off guard - I got really nervous. How could they "miss" the fact that China was building submarines? One would think that all of the military activity and outreach that China has been doing would attract closer scrutiny.

The "Work" of Capital

Last year about this time, the Bush regime was busy opening up Iraq "for business." This did not (and still does not) mean that they were stimulating Iraq's economy by providing small business loans, rebuilding infrastructure, and stimulating Iraqi employment. Quite the opposite really. They were busy privatising state owned assets (like oil) and handing out no-bid, profit guaranteed contracts to corporations like Halliburton who were (and are) getting their workforce from outside Iraq. I wrote a couple of pieces on this fiasco at the time - Privatize this - corporatize that, and Where does the money go in Iraq?. So why go back to that old issue at this point? Well there are some new insights to be gained.

There is an article in the Washington Post - 35 Guantánamo Detainees Are Given to Pakistan. According to the article, the Guantanamo detainees were turned over to Pakistan after "extended negotiations." Negotiations about what one might ask. Perhaps something related to Musharraf wants to make Pakistan a secular state, and perhaps the whole Khan nuke affair, or perhaps bin Laden, or who knows. Anyway there is another discrepancy of note.

Civil War in Iraq?

The rumblings for months have been that "civil war" is brewing in Iraq. That news is coupled with reports of the "ineffectiveness" of Iraqi police and troops. Both are not so subtle arguments for why the US needs to stay in Iraq. Or if you take a different slant, these events are reflective of a "failed policy" by the Bush administration and why we need to stay in Iraq. The voices are few for "correcting" the situation and getting foreign troops out of Iraq.

It is said that international terrorism is like a hydra, so it only makes sense (I guess) that the defense against terrorism is as diverse. One of those pulled out of the moth ball strategies was the defunct and debunked missile defense system known as "Star Wars." Initiated under the Reagan administration and widely debunked as useless, ineffective, and expensive, it made its comeback under G.W. as critical to the US "war on terrorism." Ready or not, it will be implemented.

I guess that I should feel validated or reassured when the headlines confirm what I already know, but somehow it just ticks me off. For example, despite the Bush administration constantly reiterating they had no "torture" policy (I've already flogged that topic) today's headline reads Bush team 'knew of abuse' at Guantánamo. Well, for those with short memories, how about this one from 9/23/03 - "Did U.S. Forces Allow a Massacre of 3,000 Taliban Prisoners to Occur?" . Or how about this from 3/07/03 - Afghan Prisoners Beaten to Death at US Military Interrogation Base.

Letter from Sam Hammil - Poets Against the War

The following letter is posted from Poets Against the War. It was written by Sam Hammil.

September 11, 2004

"Extending the war into Iraq would have incurred incalculable human and political costs. We would have been forced to occupy Baghdad and, in effect, rule Iraq. The coalition would instantly have collapsed, the Arabs deserting in anger and other allies pulling out as well. Exceeding the U.N.'s mandate would have destroyed the precedent of international response to aggression we hoped to establish. Had we gone the invasion route, the U.S. could still be an occupying power in a bitterly hostile land." --George H. W. Bush, 1998

As of today, the casualty count exceeds 1,000 Americans and something in the neighborhood of 30,000 Iraqi civilians killed. The war that George W. Bush said Iraqi oil would pay for has now cost us over $200 billion and that debt grows exponentially every day. The Bushies are still trying to tie Iraq to September 11 and the "war on terrorism" that even Bush admits will never be won. The Republican party has treated the U. S. A. to a display of fear- and hate-mongering that hasn't been seen says the days of Joe McCarthy. Bin Laden is alive the numbers of his comrades have grown exponentially.

I am really tired of hearing, from Bush administration officials and from the average Jane, "what we did isn't as bad as what they did." In Iraq, the US occupation is "better" than Hussein; US run prisons (even with abuse and murder) are "better" than under Hussein. Rumsfeld said yesterday " the military's mistreatment of detainees was not as bad as what terrorists have done". Must we aim so friggin LOW?

More Economic Recovery Hype

The new job numbers came out last week for August 2004. Heralded by Bush and some economists as a sign of (continued) positive news, 144,000 jobs were created. After the significant downward revision of July's figures to 32,000, I am waiting with bated breath for these numbers to drop as well. Eduardo Porter from the NY Times, puts a positive spin on what is clearly notpositive news by arguing that in the "new" economic reality almost any gain is a positive sign. If that isn't a mind f**k then it is surely propaganda.

After spending most of the last year reading and writing about the problems with computerized voting, the following headline caught my eye as a warning - Problems Abound in Election System. My immediate response was "tell me something new." As I started reading the article, however, my jaw dropped. This was not another expose on electronic voting. It was on "outmoded" voting machines. Yes friends the dreaded specter of the "hanging chad" is being waved before our faces again. What was even more surprising was the source of this story - the Washington Post.

To the best of my knowledge, none of the various official reports on 9/11 even mentioned the issue and it is a glaring omission in those reports. It is an omission that dramatically undermines the credibility of the various investigations, and overlooks a key piece of investigatorial advice - "follow the money." What am I talking about? The "put options" placed leading up to the events of September 11, 2001.

The tragedy of the hostage situation in Beslan, Russia at Middle School No. 1 continues its grisly unfolding. On Wednesday, an unknown number of armed people slipped into the school and took students, parents, and staff hostage. It was the first day of school. Early in the hostage situation, there was a release of some hostages. Then without warning everything blew up - literally. The captors had wired series of explosives around the gym where many of the hostages were being held. Then yesterday there was an exchange of fire between the captors and Russian forces followed by a series of explosions which collapsed the roof of the gym on the heads of the captives. This set off open battle between Russian Special Forces and the captors. The current count is 322 dead (151 of whom are children) and hundreds more injured.

Bush's Acceptance Speech

Did any of you watch Bush's acceptance speech last night? It was very odd. Apparently a couple of people were vocal in their opposition to Bush's comments on Iraq. In totally inappropriate places, the delegates started shouting "4 more years." Bush looked puzzled, I certainly was. This was apparently the crowd response to the two delegates (I presume) who were voicing their dissatisfaction. Security removed the dissenters. Once I knew what had happened, it bothered me even more. The mass silencing of two dissenters (who were removed within minutes anyway) was worth shouting down their esteemed leader. Did the mass mind feel they were "protecting" Bush, or was silencing a dissenting voice more important than interrupting the President of the US who they had nominated for another run? Talk about "group think" this was more of a mob. The shout down response was overwhelming and rapid. The more I thought about it the more it scared me. I'd like to hear how you interpretted the events.

A lot can happen in three years.

In the United States since 9/11, about 4,000 children died from child abuse and neglect; in more than 80 percent of cases, parents were the perpetrators. About 36,000 Americans died from unnecessary surgery. Another 21,000 died from medication errors in hospitals, along with another 60,000 from other errors in hospitals. Adverse reactions to prescription drugs killed about 100,000. Roughly 10,000 Americans died from accidental drowning. About 2,100 died from bicycle accidents. Homicidal Americans killing other Americans took another roughly 60,000 lives. Suicide took more than 90,000. Traffic deaths amounted to well over 120,000.
