For those of you who are concerned about the growing shadow of government secrecy, there is a new site you should check out and bookmark - Open The Government. THis is a site run jointly by a coalition of groups and looks to be an important resource for all of us. For those of you with more of a current history bent, I would also recommend George Washington University's The National Security Archive. I have visited this site often to track down events that have led us to our current situation.

Weapons of Indiscriminate Destruction

There are weapons that go on killing and the US specializes in them. These weapons exert their destructive capability long after the battle or war is over. In one case, this destruction continues for generations. Yes, I am talking about two common weapons - landmines and depleted uranium casings. These "tools of the trade" are zealously defended by the United States even though most of the rest of the world is (or is working on) banning them.

I was contacted by the author (David Pakman) of a political site named Hear the Issues. I visited his site and was very impressed with what he is doing. He has two articles up right now that I believe are insightful regarding the current political environment in the US. One article is 10 Regions of United States Politics. It does a brief analysis of each region. The second article is The Red State Myth which offers a different look at the Red State/Blue State oversimplification.

That the United States is a militarized imperial empire is beyond question at this point in time. The level of nationalism, xenophobia, and mindless hatred has divided this nation even worse, in some ways, than what I remember taking place during the civil rights and anti-war movements during the 1960's. The "my country right or wrong" and "love it or leave it" hysteria today makes the past pale in comparison in many, many ways.

The Project for a New American Century is back to offering (writing?) US policy advice, while Lockheed Martin (please do look at the front page of their website) takes over the Pentagon. One group is defining who the "enemies of the US" are, while the other has become the world's (and the US') defense contractor. Both PNAC and Lockheed are keeping themselves very busy these days.

There was a cruel and spiteful child torturing animals til they were dead
Now he orders others to torture in his stead

Along the way from boy to man, all his messes turned into gold
He went blithely on his way - styling himself on tyrants of old

Inept as child and then as a man, it seemed he couldn't lose
From baseball teams to companies each failure was a golden goose

He learned he could say that "black was white" and evil was all good
Someone would make the lie seem truth, as he thought it should

He calls himself a Christian, but belongs to Skull and Bones
A death cult of the power elite with Satanic overtones

"Oh", say all, "at that time he wasn't born again."
But listen all ye countrymen Skulls cronies fill his den

This cruel child, and now cruel man, stands at the helm of state
And sees the world as his to claim - his very own blank slate

He has at his disposal the most destructive toys on earth
And all the world to throw them at - a privilege of his birth

So beware the boyish smile and the frequent sidewise smirk
This man is very dangerous, and not simply a jerk

Still Trying to Justify the Invasion of Iraq

Bush is still trying to justify the invasion of Iraq with the claim of finding a chemical weapons lab and dirty bomb directions in Fallujah. However, there are a couple of problems that seem to belie the tale. First, according to Reuters, Marines Unaware Of Chemical Weapons Lab In Fallujah (whoops). Second, according to an AFP report, Blix skeptical at Iraqi chemical weapons find. But then Blix is not on exactly good terms with the Bush regime after coming out and stating that the invasion violated international law.

Those of you who know me know that I do hate holidays. I hate them for a variety of reasons, but most are either political or ethical. But it is Thanksgiving, and I am thankful for a number of things.

More Voting Thoughts

I've mentioned this before, but I want to revisit why I think it is critical to investigate the US elections.

After the 2000 election which was effectively decided (unconstitutionally) by the Supreme Court, and in which the state at the center of the controversy (Florida) had engaged in what was clearly voter disenfranchisement on a variety of levels, it was absolutely essential that the credibility of this election be assured. In innumerable ways, that is not the case. Just to name a few, we have, what appears to be deliberate interventions such as what voters were challenged by Republicans and where. We have inadequate numbers of voting machines (meaning not even delivering the number the states had and required) to select precincts. This created hours of waiting to vote. The large discrepancies between exit polls, and vote tallies - not everywhere, but in specific precincts. We have suspicious vote reversals - areas registered 85% Democrat with histories of voting the ticket suddenly going 80% Republican. All of these issues become magnified in light of the 2000 elections.

We all knew that this one was coming - Officers See Need For Bigger Iraq Force (Wa. Post 11/22/04). What a surprise. Not only did the destruction of Fallujah not "break the back" of the "insurgency," it led to increasing attacks across Iraq (Al Jazeera, 11/21/04). Of course, everyone except Bush and Rumsfeld already knew that there were inadequate numbers of forces in Iraq for the "plan" being carried out. There were too few to start with; too few for the last year and a half, and too few now.

First is that the sneaks in Washington have included a provision in the "omnibus" budget package to significantly erode access to legal abortions.

The abortion language would bar federal, state and local agencies from withholding taxpayer money from health care providers that refuse to provide or pay for abortions or refuse to offer abortion counseling or referrals. Current federal law, aimed at protecting Roman Catholic doctors, provides such "conscience protection'' to doctors who do not want to undergo abortion training. The new language would expand that protection to all health care providers, including hospitals, doctors, clinics and insurers.

If you think you have a debt problem then look at what the Congress did. Yep they raised the debt limit to $8.18 TRILLION. As noted in the Post article, Just the increase in the debt ceiling over the past three years is nearly 2 1/2 times the entire federal debt accumulated between 1776 and 1980." URGENT: Tell Congress Not to Lower Yucca Mountain Safety Standards! (From Public Citizen)

As Congress attempts to complete its annual approprations work during a lame-duck session this week, the White House is seeking to slip two policy riders into a huge omnibus spending bill. One rider would reverse the recent court ruling that threw out EPA's inadequate radiation safety standards. The other would grant free access to a $15 billion special fund for nuclear waste disposal that so far has required the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to seek congressional approval for expeditures.

Shortly after George W. Bush unleashed the "Dogs of War" on Iraq last year, and right after an emerging insurgency started growing, Bush asked, "What's the matter with those people; don't they know how good we [Americans] are?" And that right there is at the heart of what I see as a very big problem with so very many of my fellow American citizens - and one that in many ways is getting worse and not better.

Toward the end of this article, Goff does something a bit unusual: he permits himself a paragraph of utopian suggestions, describing a set of politically impossible reforms whose necessity and curative power seem to this editor entirely convincing. When I call them politically impossible, I mean what they meant in high school chemistry class when they described stuff you could only do with nuclear reactions or relativistic effects: "impossible by normal means." November 5, 2004 1900 PDT (FTW) - The rest of the world has known for some time that it is pointless to oppose this Empire either militarily or electorally. They haven't the resources for the former and are legally barred from the latter. I think it's time the American people adopted the same philosophy. We are, after all, legally barred from inspecting electronic voting machines. The rest of the world has been fighting with money and public relations because these tactics work and work well. As I feared, Falluja is indeed proving to be deadly. As of the latest reports, 18 US soldiers have been killed, 178 wounded (with 102 of them serious enough to be flown out of the country). Iraqi troop casualties were estimated at 5, and "insurgent" dead at 600. I can find no estimates of civilian casualties, but concern is high. On Tuesday (11/09), Al Jazeera reported 'Scores of civilians' killed in Falluja, and the Guardian reported the food, medicine, and medical aid were sorely lacking. This proved true in the case of as the 9 year old son of Mohammed Abboud bled to death because the family could not get him to a hospital through the fighting.

I wasn’t surprised at the recent election results. The reasons given were predictable. Some of them had the usual themes like Diebold machines and a repeat of other tools of electoral fraud. They could be right on this, to an extent this time around.

The question is if Americans are being defrauded a second time, with American blood being spilt, and the promise of more carnage in store, why isn’t John Kerry at least demanding a full re-vote, at least for principle’s sake, and prevent this literally bloody fiesta from repeating itself? When many accused Al Gore of caving in too easily the first time around – when he had actually won — you’d expect the Democrat challenger this time around to go down fighting as if he (or the nation) had nothing to lose. If people are genuinely mad, they’d endorse that recount and not blame the Democrats for fuelling a sense of national insecurity, or indignation.

Well, the attack on Falluja has begun. From the reports thus far there are lots of bombing and strafing runs, and US and Iraqi troops have entered the city. It is likely there will be a high casualty toll for both US and Iraqi troops as well as for civilians in the city. I don't know if the current action is necessary or not, but I do believe that this should never have happened. Let us hope that the insurgents surrender and the conflict is short-lived. There is no chance that Zarqawi will be captured as the military reports he most likely left Falluja weeks ago (heard that on the radio this morning).

The main reason I am angry with John Kerry is that he conceded so rapidly. Even before election night there were concerns of voter disenfrachisement, problems with electronic voting, and concerns of fraud. In conceding the election, Kerry ensured that the issues and problems with electronic voting would go largely unreported by the corporate media. There are two immediate actions you can take to bring the truth about election 2004 voting to light (and hopefully justice).

First, give a donation to Black Box Voting (ORG). They have launched the largest Freedom of Information Request in history to get the information necessary to determine the level of problems and where they occurred.

Second, Blackboxvoting.org had put out a call for people to send a fax to Ralph Nader, asking him to challenge the election results in New Hampshire. Send the Fax Now to: 202-265-0092. Text should Read:

If you listened to all or part of President Bush's press conference on 11/04, it is clear that he feels he has a "mandate" and "the people" are behind him. He intends to charge full speed ahead with his vision: fighting the war on terrorism, spreading peace and democracy in the Middle East; cutting taxes, privatizing Social Security; enforcing No Child Left Behind; and his own peculiar brand of "growing the economy." From the tone of the delivery, I would say that if the first four years were a warm up. He is going to move and move fast - that is clear from the speech.

Still Thinking About What the Vote Means

Voter turnout was just under 60%. That means that 40% of the eligible voters didn't show up. That is a significant number of folks. So of the 60% about half voted for Bush and half for Kerry (if you aren't skeptical of the vote). Thirty percent of the population purportedly classify themselves as "Evangelical." According to reports, 79% of evangelicals voting voted for Bush. Ten percent of registered democrats also voted for Bush (they may have been part of the evangelical total, but I haven't seen or heard that). So is America polarized or are voters who chose to vote polarized? What about those 40%? They are a larger group than either voting group. Why didn't they vote? I would love to know.

The Country From Where I Stand

t is being reported that Kerry has conceded the election. I thought he would hold out for the actual vote - which is not in. That vote includes the 10 million absentee ballots that have not been counted. Regardless of how the true vote went, the divide in the country which was noticeable in the 2000 race, looks like it has hardened and polarized even more in this election.

I am opening this post for election comments. I am way too stressed to say anything about the Presidential race at this point. I am on the verge of being heartsick. While Oregon seems to have gone for Kerry, it also looks like homophobia reigns - too early and too close to tell.

Full Text of 18 Minute bin Laden Tape

The National Business Review has the 18 minute transcript of bin Laden's latest tape. If you want to compare transcripts, Al Jazeera has another full transcript. The NBR says that Al Jazeera edited the transcript and it leaves out parts. Namely:

Among the key lines omitted by al Jazeera was a general threat of on-going warfare: "We want to restore freedom to our Nation and just as you lay waste to our Nation, so shall we lay waste to yours."

Perhaps more significant were several long passages in which bin Laden rejoices in the economic costs of the war to America -- and identifies Iraq as a key aspect of al Qaeda's strategy to force the American economy into bankruptcy.

An Election Spoiled Rotten

It's not even Election Day yet, and the Kerry-Edwards campaign is already down by a almost a million votes. That's because, in important states like Ohio, Florida and New Mexico, voter names have been systematically removed from the rolls and absentee ballots have been overlooked‹overwhelmingly in minority areas, like Rio Arriba County, New Mexico, where Hispanic voters have a 500 percent greater chance of their vote being "spoiled." Investigative journalist Greg Palast reports on the trashing of the election.

Walter Cronkite appeared on Larry King Live to discuss the implications of Bin Laden's latest tape release (Bin Laden Releases New Videotape). The transcript makes interesting reading, but this quote jumps out:

CRONKITE: What we just heard. So now the question is basically right now, how will this affect the election? And I have a feeling that it could tilt the election a bit. In fact, I'm a little inclined to think that Karl Rove, the political manager at the White House, who is a very clever man, he probably set up bin Laden to this thing. The advantage to the Republican side is to get rid of, as a principal subject of the campaigns right now, get rid of the whole problem of the al Qaqaa explosive dump. Right now, that, the last couple of days, has, I think, upset the Republican campaign.

Amazingly, King doesn't followup on this though the issue of Bin Laden and the tape's impact on the election continues.
