To the New Year

By Rowan Wolf

Well, 2004 could have gone much better for the world, and 2005 is off to a running bad start. I generally don't do New Year's resolutions, but feel the need to affirm that I commit myself to continuing the struggle for sanity, peace, and justice. I also commit to keeping UTJ going for another year. We live in challenging times on every level of existence it seems. We re-learn every day just how small the world we share is. Just when it seems that my heart cannot be moved any more deeply, it is. So I brace myself for continuing struggles, and attempt to keep my heart open. May we all deal gently with each other in the coming year. I wish you all strength, hope, and the support of friends and strangers. May you practice, and be the recipient of, rnadom acts of kindness.

Knowing you are all realists as well as dreamers, keep your dreams alive - even in the face of reality!

Tsunami Response: Money and Politics

Update 12/31/04 10:19am pst: The US has just upped their contribution to $350 million]

As the death toll from the tsunami goes over 135,000, individual donations and pressure force increases in governmental donations. Even corporations are stepping up to the plate. Logistics at the receiving end though is hampering distribution of critical relief to millions. The Bush administration has tried to defend its low response of $35 million with promises of more to come. Meanwhile, Bush once more shows his disdain for the UN and his penchant for unilateralism by establishing a "core group" to coordinate relief efforts.

Tsunami: Who Knew What When?

We should not be surprised that as the death toll from the tsunami rises towards 124,000, that questions of foreknowledge arise. Since the tsunami hit, there have been questions of whether a tsunami warning system would have mitigated the death toll, and one of the outcomes will certainly be a global tsunami warning system. However, now the questions are moving from lack of preparedness to foreknowledge.

Massive Earth Quake Followed by Tsunami

Update 12/26/04 11:12pm (pst). There are now over 14,000 dead with hundreds of thousands displaced. The concern now is disease from contaminated water supplies and flood sewage systems. There are also the expected immediate needs. The International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent have issued an appeal. I believe that Northwest Medical Teams is also sending personnel and medical supplies. Both should soon be listing for donations specifically for the affected areas.

An 8.9 magnitude earth quake hit in the ocean off of Aceh in Indonesia. It was followed by a massive tsunami affecting a tremendously wide area (Indonesia, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, India, Sumatra, Burma, Bangladesh, and possibly Somalia). Seven thousand people are assumed dead at this point, but the toll is rising dramatically. The links below from the BBC, provide news and video of the ongoing disaster.

Justice, Fair Play--Are They Just Words When Applied to Rape by U.S. Personnel and the Military?

By: Jack Dalton

It's been common knowledge in this country for a very, very long time that if you want justice or fair play you had better have real deep pockets. One only need have a cursory look at the body of information in the public arena to support this: corporate executives that lie, cheat and steal and then receive only a slap on the wrist after destroying thousands of peoples life savings and retirements; the spectacle of the O.J. Simpson trial years back; these are but two of the many examples of what money, money, money can and does buy--a lot of "justice."

US and China - Conflict of Interest?

Share/Save/Bookmark | Sphere: Related Content

By Rowan Wolf

China has become one of the major product suppliers to the US. The use of Chinese labor by multi-national corporations (such as Wal-Mart) has driven a rapid industrialization of China. The Chinese government has opened the doors to capitalism and to modernization. The largest potential consumer market in the world has largely opened its doors. All of this change is creating some other issues. First, the dramatic growth has thrown China in direct competition with the largest resource hog - the US. Second, China has been underwriting US debt. This combination of events make for an uneasy "friendship," and sets the stage for future conflicts.

Since UTJ has been posting information from Jack Dalton on Jennifer Dyer's situation with the Army, and it has generated significant discussion, here is an update.

The Assistant Secretary of the Army (Manpower and Reserve Affairs) approved Jennifer Dyer's Resignation of Commission Request, effective 8/31/04 before the AWOL. The Character of Separation is Honorable. She now awaits the DD214. Word came through yesterday.

Essentially what this means is that the Army is not saying that she was Absent Without Leave. Very good news indeed.

Thanks to Jack for forwarding this along.

Reports of the US torture of detainees and prisoners in the "war on terrorism" are back in the news as new reports come to light. From Guantanamo, to Afghanistan, to Iraq - if the US is there then there is torture. When all this first broke last year many, including myself, have argued that torture is an approved policy of President George W. Bush. The most recent evidence certainly confirms that perception that Bush directly ordered the use of torture.

The Article 32 hearing for 1st LT Michael Hall took place on Friday, Dec. 10th. Fred Klepp told me in an email afterward that he fully expects Hall to be held over for a General Courts Martial. Well and good, he should be put on trial as should anyone that commits an act of rape. At the same time the Army has done nothing in terms of Jennifer and her AWOL status. If the Army had honored her original request for a compassionate transfer after she was raped instead of insisting she return to Camp Shelby after her convalescent leave none of this would be happening.

In my previous piece about the ongoing horror in Fallujah, I noted that the US press has essentially declared a news blackout on what is going on. Actually they are doing something even sneakier. Instead of reporting on Fallujah, they are shifting to reporting on the "Anbar Province." Try a google news search on "Fallujah" and then one on "Anbar Province." For "Anbar Province" the first 54 of 60 links are US news sources. For the "Fallujah" search it runs about 50/50 - right now. My guess is it going to shift more and more toward "Anbar." However, even though most US media seem to be shifting to "Anbar Province," it still isn't making headline news.

Privatizing Social Security is a Ponzi Scheme

Ponzi Scheme Etymology: Charles A. Ponzi died 1949 American (Italian-born) swindler : an investment swindle in which some early investors are paid off with money put up by later ones in order to encourage more and bigger risks.

Much of the average US worker's retirement is already invested in the stock market - not by them, but by their employer. Employers, particularly local and state governments, used to invest in bonds and treasury bills. Then they started investing in the stock market. To millions of middle income folks indirectly invested in the market via employers and group plans, to those directly invested through 401K and other vehicles, the crash of 2000 through 2002 wiped out any hope of retiring soon. Others learned how they could go broke with companies - such as ENRON - who ate through their retirement savings in highly profitable schemes (for top executives and big shareholders) and then became insolvent.

Cell phone user alert!
It is recommended that you immediately register your cell phone with the Do Not Call registry by Dec 15th. Starting January 1, 2005 advertisers will get lists of cell phone numbers. Calls from advertisers can eat your minutes to nothing. [You can click the icon, or call toll-free, 1-888-382-1222

While I am recommending this as a consumer precaution, I include a caveat that registration goes on a government list, and those lists are likely to be vulnerable to access by the government as part of "anti-terrorism" legislation.

Operation Iraqi Pillage: Why Free-market Capitalism

Share/Save/Bookmark | Sphere: Related Content

By Guest Author: Pamela Langley

"The great historical irony of the catastrophe unfolding in Iraq is that the shock-therapy reforms that were supposed to create an economic boom that would rebuild the country have instead fueled a resistance that ultimately made reconstruction impossible" (Klein, 53).

This past summer Joel Bakan's film, The Corporation, posited that our continued worship at the altar of the corporation includes a paradoxical practice of sacrificing the sacred-cow human to fuel a capitalistic god. Despite the obvious symptoms of practicing this bad religion at home - rising levels of homelessness, a lowered standard of living, soaring unemployment in specific sectors of the population, a dwindling middle class, a burgeoning prison industrial complex - the US continues to sing halleluiah to the freedom of unbridled capitalism. And for the unfortunate, unwilling citizens of US-occupied Iraq, we have forced on them our version of "capitalistic democracy" (as if the two are mutually entwined) to an exponential degree in a demonstration of the corporate guinea-pigging of an entire nation. After nearly two years of inept administration, the Iraqi response to invasion and unrestrained free enterprise has led to an escalation of violent resistance and rebellion - which, I will argue, is a direct result of the policies that privileged US corporate interests to the detriment of state-sponsored humanitarian and rebuilding efforts.

Since the first Bush Jr. administration in 200, we have had an onslaught of issues, directives, decisions, plans, etc, that apparently must be kept from the public's eyes for reasons of "national security." This only accelerated with the legislation following 9/11/01 and included secret laws. Yes friends, secret laws that you can be impacted by, but to which you have no access. The most well known of these relate to security and flying.

I imagine over the next couple of weeks we will be getting more information about the so-called "Intelligence Reform" legislation that will likely go to Bush for signing this week. What we do know, is that there was (is?) a power struggle between supporters of a National Intelligence Agency and the Pentagon (which now has 80% of the black ops budget). We do know that the legislation would centralize intelligence operations, make a National Intelligence Director, and give that director budget authority over the other intelligence agencies.

The EU is set to close fishing grounds in the North and Irish Seas to stop the total destruction of the fisheries and the marine eco-system of the region. Creating huge no-fishing marine preserves is seen as the only way to save the fisheries. While pollution and climatic changes are part of the declining numbers of ocean life, over-fishing is the biggest culprit.

On one hand, you could say that the relationship between Pakistan's President General Pervez Musharraf and US President George W. Bush is on excellent terms. They certainly seem friendly in front of the cameras (not always the case with Bush and international leaders). And you would assume from various policy issues and statements of coalition allegiance, that Pakistan is one of the US' primary allies in the "war on terrorism." All of this makes the statements of Musharraf more puzzling - not less.

A new set of pictures of prisoner abuse has surfaced - this time by Navy Seals from May of 2003 - and yet another investigation has been launched. The Navy states that abuse may not have occurred, but that these may be "trophy photos" (which are illegal under international law, and Naval regulations). John Hutson (Navy Judge Advocate General from 1997-2000) states:

"Once you start allowing that kind of behaviour [trophy pictures], the next step is to start posing the POWs in order to get even better pictures."

Bhopal After 20 Years

Twenty years ago I was 30 years old. I watched the news in horror as thousands of people choked and collapsed on the TV screen in front of me. I remember the panic of the people and their inability to escape the toxic cloud that they had no choice but to breathe. As the story of the "accident" was released bit by bit, my anger at Union Carbide increased. Then the story all but disappeared. The worst chemical disaster in history simply quietly faded away. But not for the people of Bhopal. Bhopal dramatically changed my perceptions and understanding about corporations, power, and government. I think it did the same for many others.

Propaganda from The Independent

Why is Patrick Cockburn from The Independent/UK lying about the missing 380 tons of explosives?

"The disappearance of 350 tons of explosives, including 191 tons of HMX, at the time of the war in April last year became a crucial issue in the last weeks of the US presidential election campaign. John Kerry portrayed the failure to secure the explosives, which could have been used to kill US soldiers, as a symbol of Mr Bush's incompetence in Iraq.

It now appears that senior officials in the Iraqi government were discussing the removal of the HMX before the fall of Saddam. The letter from Dr Sabri, obtained by The Independent, was sent on 4 April 2003 as US tanks were advancing on Baghdad. It said that the world was getting the impression that Iraqi civilians were co-operating with American soldiers."
