Irony of Ironies - A Theocratic State of Iraq?
I'll keep this short. I just have to laugh about purported concerns that Iraq will follow Islamic law (sharia). Here we have Bush and Company who are doing everything in their power to inject Christianity (evangelical) into the government of the United States, bemoaning the creation of an Islamic government in the now "democratic" Iraq. If it is good enough for the US isn't it good enough for Iraq? Or is it that it would be an Islamic "democracy" rather than a Christian "democracy?"
2/14/05 Shahzad, Asia Times, US fights back against ' rule by clerics'
2/14/05 Enders & Howden, Independent/UK, Iraqi vote gives Shia parties a mandate for Islamic law
(I, personally, feel that theocracy as a government - in the US or in Iraq - is a very bad idea.)

Welcome to "The New Iraq" ! There are three elements necessary for a stable Iraq, (1) Poltical (2) Infrastructure and (3) security; further I would argue that unless and until the Palestine/Isarel conflict is put to rest with proper supervision there will never be any rest in the middle east, add oil to the mixutre and you have a situation that is never going to end.
We need entirely different perspective in terms of our energy policies, consumption etc, as well as a foreign policy that stays engaged.
While I agree with all the aforementioned, it is parapharsed from two Lt. Gen. retired from the USMC, the other night on the Leher news hour. However it is something I and others have been saying for some time.
Further, we need to understand that Iraqi are their chosen religion first, then they are Iraqi, but as usual we fail to take into account culture differences.
