Newsweek Apologizes - But

While Newsweek has apologized for printing the allegation that a Quran was desecrated, their report was neither new, nor was it likely false. According to MediaChannel, Newsweek Got it Right. At least six different news articles, by different news organizations, from 2003 to 2005, said the same thing. The attack on Newsweek seems yet another attempt to cow a media organization back into line.

Come now. With all that has gone on, Newsweek just got brave enough to spill the beans. It won't matter how well they try to pick up the beans, we all still saw the mess.

I agree with the assessment that this is just another example of strongarming the media out of releasing sensitive stories. Newsweek has been around long enough, is conservative enough, and has way too much at stake to have published this story without utter certainty. The lame excuse of "usually this source is reliable, this time he wasn't" would suggest that no one at Newsweek has ever been to journalism school.

From the little experience I have with classes on journalism, checking, rechecking, and having MANY sources to back a story of this magnitude is Journalism 101. I am very skeptical that a major news periodical like Newsweek would print a story like this with only one "usually reliable" source.
