Repealing Presidential Term Limits
There are three articles here on repealing the 22nd Amendment which sets the terms limits for President of the United States. This is a very big issue, and a very serious one. It is being talked about various places on the web, and it is generally either stated or implied that it is a Republican plot to take over the presidency - permanently. That is possible, but it is not as straightforward as that. As I pointed out in my article Why Would We Repeal Presidential Term Limits? on June 15, 2005, the sponsors of this resolution are FOUR Democrats and ONE Republican. [The five Congressman are:
Steny Hoyer (D-Maryland) Sponsor, Howard Berman (D-Ca.), Frank Pallone (D-NJ), Martin Olav Sabo (D-Mn), James Sensenbrenner (R-Ws)]
Are these Dems working in collusion with the GOP? Possibly. Is this move reflective that we really have a ONE party system? Probably. Does this "bipartisan" effort present a significant threat to the US Constitution? Absolutely!
Regardless, I want to be very clear on who is involved in this little plot to destroy the democracy. The article by Jack Dalton (Be Afraid, Be Very Afraid - Something Evil This Way is Coming!) includes the repeal attempt as part of the BushCo domination strategy. In talking to Jack, I know that he feels this falls into the category of we really have one party - not two. A feeling that I tend to share. In the article by John Chuckman (All Bush, All The Time, For The Rest of Your life), he unambiguously states that this is a Republican maneuver. I tried to reach John for insight into his claim, but in almost a week he has not replied.
I have published the articles by Jack Dalton and by John Chuckman even though I believe they incorrectly place the blame on the Republicans because the issues that are raised in the articles are important in spite of this oversight.
This is one of those things that are likely to slip under the radar if we are not careful. If this attempt to call for a repeal of the 22nd amendment is successful, it will go to the states. Do we really want to fight a state by state battle on this? I sure don't.
I urge you to contact your representatives and let them know that you do not support repealing Presidential term limits.
