| "Author and economist Nicholas Stern says China needs to become a "key player" in averting this scenario, or it will suffer, too.
"If global warming was left uncontrolled, there would be very severe droughts in northern China, severe floods in southern China, and great water stress as a result of receding glaciers and snow caps in the Himalayas," he said. " "But the Chinese government still seems to be of two minds about the climate. On the one hand, it talks of being environmentally conscious. On the other, it still subsidizes the cost of gasoline, and encourages car ownership, in a country whose roads are already crammed with vehicles belching out more and more emissions." | "A United Kingdom (UK) climate change economist on Friday commended China's efforts to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases." ... "On the emission of greenhouse gas, I don't think there is a sense of delay in China. There is a sense of urgency and there is a very practical concern with questions of finance and technology," Stern said. |
Which article would give you a sense that everything is under control? Which would make you think that work needs to be done? These articles present the dilemma of the citizen. We make our decisions based upon the information that we have available. When news is distorted, incomplete, or framed, then so to is understanding of the issues.
For decades, the corporate press in the U.S. has created the impression of "debate" over the existence and causes of global warming. There has not been a "debate" for quite some time. however, by reporting a minority opinion (sponsored by big business) without caveat next to the prevailing scientific opinion (which included the overwhelming majority of scientists), the perception was created that there was a conflict among scientists that in fact did not exist. the media might argue that they were offering readers "both sides of the story," however, they were giving both sides equal weight and misrepresenting the "debate" itself. Such a representation, stretching over decades, results in a deliberate effort to deceive and confuse. Such representations - regardless of whose press it appears in - transforms information into propaganda.
