The Crash is a Good Thing?

Since Bernanke cut interest rates last Tuesday (Sept. 25th), the already weak dollar has gone into a tail spin. Bernanke's banker friends complained that they did not have enough money to cover their obligations and Bernanke responded by revving up the presses and printing up a slew of fresh funny money. In doing this he ignored the rest of the world, which was hoping that he would show some backbone and stand firm in support of the dollar. So now, everywhere you look, the dollar is losing its value against other currencies.

If wishes were horses

If wishes were horses, most Americans would have known that Iraq and Afghanistan are just the latest victims of the colonial behemoth in a continued saga of American imperialism and not any thing else. That throughout its imperialistic expedition, Americans have firmly believed that the United States was God's chosen nation and, therefore, on course to divine destinies. They would have known Senator Albert J. Beveridge's speech to Congress that exemplifies this American attitude as nothing else does, "...and thanksgiving to Almighty God that He has marked us as His chosen people, henceforth to lead in the regeneration of the world..." If wishes were horses.

I recently caught up with Rob Williams, volunteer editor of VERMONT COMMONS which is the online voice of Vermont Independence. The organization has been working for some time to establish The Second Vermont Republic which is a peaceful, democratic, grassroots, libertarian populist movement opposed to the tyranny of the U.S. Government, corporate America, and globalization and committed to the return of Vermont to its rightful status as an independent republic, as it was between 1777 and 1791. More of the history of Vermont and the Independence movement can be read at the VT Commons website.

Fed Up With Cowardice and Duplicity

I am fed up and more than ticked off by most of the Congress and by the Democratic Presidential candidates. Remember the expansion of the Bush's illegal wiretapping? Remember the temporary expansion of the FISA extension than Representative Harman was passed based on hyped security threats? WHY are the Democrats passing these attacks on civil liberties and Constitutional protections?

Mindful Economics

I must say that I never thought I would enjoy reading an economics book, but one has come to my attention that is just that - a enjoyable and interesting read. The book is Mindful Economics: Understanding American Capitalism and Alternatives by Joel Magnuson. I want to clarify up front that Joel Magnuson is a fellow faculty member at Portland Community College. I knew him in name only until he reached out to me about this book. Since then we have talked via email and in person several times. I do feel that I am offering my honest appraisal of his work.

The week of September 22nd - September 29th will be full of activities across the country calling for peace in Iraq and bringing the U.S. troops home. Check with your local Peace and Anti-war organizations for specific actions happening in your area. There will be events happening throughout the Fall, but the culmination for this week is September 29, 2007 when peace rallies and marches are happening across the country.

One would think that from the cries of (feigned) indignation and calls for repentance arising from conservatives regarding Move-On.org's ad in the N.Y. Times that the liberal-leaning group had not simply questioned the insights and intentions of a public servant, promoting, in a public forum, the policy of an illegal and immoral occupation of a sovereign nation; rather, the folks of Move-On.org had committed blasphemy against the holy name of some revered saint -- General Mary Petreus, Mother of God.

Updates at Project on Defense Alternatives

Carl Conetta at PDA has contacted me with information about updates and new materials at his excellent site.

PDA has just updated its online Security Policy Libraries, adding 900 links to full-text articles on terrorism and homeland security, US defense strategy, military transformation, and the Chinese military. The libraries now link to more than ten thousand documents, all full-text and categorized. You can access them via the PDA home page (left column) or at http://www.comw.org/infogate/.

They have also just posted a resource compilation on US Neoliberal and Neoconservative Security Policy: Views, Criticism, and Alternatives. This, too, is available at our home page (right column) or directly at this link

Finally, given the interest in General Petraeus' recent report to congress re: Iraq, they've collected relevant background reports and articles here: http://www.comw.org/warreport/index.html#petraeus

These resources are meant to facilitate the work of journalists, academics, students, and policy analysts.

I encourage folks to share the excellent resources provided at PDA.

s nightfall does not come all at once, neither does oppression. In both instances, there is a twilight when everything remains seemingly unchanged. In Case of Martial Law, Break Glass

Bush now has the ability to declare martial law at his own discretion, and in so doing dissolve the other branches of government, throw out the constitution, and suspend elections. He appropriated the right to do this largely by executive order. He can declare martial law whenever he deems there is sufficient cause; cause being an act of terrorism, an economic crisis, an act of war, civil unrest, or a natural catastrophe. For more information about the executive orders and legislation granting Bush these rights, please watch the short video at mountainsnetinel.com (What We Choose to Ignore), or visit the US Martial Law Timeline.

I hate to do it, but we have a mouse problem so I do set traps from time to time. I could not figure out how the traps were consistently empty and the peanut butter gone, and usually the trap not tripped ... until this morning. I could not believe what I saw in the trap. The picture may be unpleasant to some, so it is in the extended entry.

Very Bloody Oil

Many people have been saying that the invasion (and occupation) of Iraq is about oil. I believe that there is more than oil involved, but certainly oil was a driving motivator. Now we can add Alan Greenspan to the list of those who reinforce that claim. Greenspan writes in his new book The Age of Turbulence: Adventures in a New World:

'I am saddened that it is politically inconvenient to acknowledge what everyone knows: the Iraq war is largely about oil.'

People come to us to learn about designing and building their own homes, understanding off-grid power systems, composting toilets and grey-water systems, on-farm slaughtering, bio-dynamic practices, spiritual gardening, dowsing, forest management, grazing systems, food preparation, timber harvesting, and working draft animals. We recognize that perhaps the most valuable product of our farm is our experience. We do not promote ourselves as possessing the "Right Way". We have skills, and we are glad to share them with people who value the learning.

September 11 - the world changed

On September 11, 2001 a series of horrendous events happened. Planes brought down two buildings of the World trade Center complex in New York City; the Pentagon was hit; and another crashed in a Pennsylvania field. It was a shock to the systems and psyches of the people of the United States and the world. It has been repeated more times than I can count the "world changed forever." Personally, I think that is a grandiose claim, but it set in motion a series of decisions and events that continue to the present.

In Case of Emergency A Good Idea

By Rowan Wolf

While the ICE Campaign [In Case of Emergency] started in 2004 with an idea by Bob Brotchie of the East Anglian Ambulance service, it was picked up by Vodaphone in 2005 (Urban Legends), it is an excellent idea. In essence, for those with mobile phones it entails making an entry (ICE) for those who should be contacted in case of emergency (ICE1, ICE2, etc). Some newer cell phones allow one to create "groups" for your phone numbers. You could make an ICE group and list those you want contacted. Such a designation would allow emergency service personnel to contact someone quickly if you were unable to provide that information.

Thanks Bill for sending this along.

On September 7th, I wrote about the arctic melt. More specifically, the concern is regarding the melting of the Greenland ice sheet. What scientists now believe is that condition of the Greenland ice sheet has been pivotal in dramatic climatic changes throughout at least the known climate shifts of Earth's history. Words such as "shocked" and "stunned" are cropping up in corporate media reports regarding the current disappearance of the ice in Greenland.

Ethical Markets: The Exuberance of What is Possible, the Reality of What is Likely

Just recently I learned of Hazel Henderson and her latest book, Ethical Markets: Growing The Green Economy as well as Henderson's Quality of Life Indicators which assess America's Gross Domestic Product (GDP), not in the terms used by traditional economics, but in terms of qualities such as: education, income, employment, infrastructure, energy, national security, environment, public safety, health, recreation, human rights and shelter. A quality-of-life assessment of every indicator reveals that contrary to the macroeconomists, America's GDP may be impressive and exceed that of any other nation, but its quality of life according to these indicators is mediocre, and in some cases, abysmal. Henderson also produces Ethical Markets TV which addresses these same issues and more and takes her message into the public television arena.

More difficult than discovering the truth, however, is convincing most of the public to accept the bitter truth.

We have only begun to see the reverberations of the mortgage meltdown. They will be as sweeping and mindboggling as global warming or an earthquake measuring 10 on the Richter scale.

I'm an historian, not an economist, so anything about economics-macro, micro-whatever, has been as foreign to me for most of my adult life as soil samples from Mars. But several years ago I had an epiphany that shattered my then-left-liberal/progressive world. I awakened from decades of delusion that I could adequately grasp world and national events without understanding the essential nature of how money works in the capitalist economy in which I live. I realized that until I acquired that understanding, all of the other subjects I preferred to talk about-war, social justice, race, gender, environment, energy depletion, civil liberties, globalization, and many more were inextricably connected with the financial machinations of the imperial beast within whose belly I reside. Today, I do not claim for one moment to be an authority on economic issues, but I have studied the works of some folks who are, such as Catherine Austin Fitts, Michael Panzner, Michael Hudson, John Crudele, Paul Grignon, and Hazel Henderson.
