Do a search on ‘class,’ social class,’ almost anything but ‘lower class,’ and you will get images like the one above – white people. Among my list of “fighting words” is ‘identity politics.’ It is thrown around by both right and left to damn issues of race and culture. The argument is that the focus should be on (the only thing that is important) class – the only differentiator among whites. The incessant focus on social class IS identity politics – white identity. Before (white) people start yelling please stop and really think. Yes, class effects everyone regardless of race. BUT, one of the major differentiaors across race is (wait for it) c l a s s.  I thank Bill Fletcher for writing this article where he does a nice job talking about class and identity politics.
