I was contacted by the author (David Pakman) of a political site named Hear the Issues. I visited his site and was very impressed with what he is doing. He has two articles up right now that I believe are insightful regarding the current political environment in the US. One article is 10 Regions of United States Politics. It does a brief analysis of each region. The second article is The Red State Myth which offers a different look at the Red State/Blue State oversimplification.
This site gets a Wolf thumbs up!

The electoral campaign has finally crawled to its dreary and foreseeable end: the victory of George W. Bush, anti-"red state" hysteria and despair among Kerry supporters, and the effective end of the antiwar movement.
Those millions of Americans appalled at the continuing carnage in Iraq must step back from the electoral debacle and draw the right lessons from it, beginning by examining the role of the Democratic Party and the liberal agenda in the antiwar movement.

You have probably all heard, but our nickles and dimes and shouting has gotten us a recount in Ohio. But don't heave a sigh yet. We need to keep up the pressure and there are a number of ways to do so.

November 5, 2004 1900 PDT (FTW) - The rest of the world has known for some time that it is pointless to oppose this Empire either militarily or electorally. They haven't the resources for the former and are legally barred from the latter. I think it's time the American people adopted the same philosophy. We are, after all, legally barred from inspecting electronic voting machines. The rest of the world has been fighting with money and public relations because these tactics work and work well. This is a lesson that American activists and true patriots should have learned four years ago. Now the tempo of battle will increase just as surely as the stakes have been raised both globally and domestically for us all.

I wasn’t surprised at the recent election results. The reasons given were predictable. Some of them had the usual themes like Diebold machines and a repeat of other tools of electoral fraud. They could be right on this, to an extent this time around.
The question is if Americans are being defrauded a second time, with American blood being spilt, and the promise of more carnage in store, why isn’t John Kerry at least demanding a full re-vote, at least for principle’s sake, and prevent this literally bloody fiesta from repeating itself? When many accused Al Gore of caving in too easily the first time around – when he had actually won — you’d expect the Democrat challenger this time around to go down fighting as if he (or the nation) had nothing to lose. If people are genuinely mad, they’d endorse that recount and not blame the Democrats for fuelling a sense of national insecurity, or indignation.

I know you don't want to hear it. You can't face one more hung chad. But I don't have a choice. As a journalist examining that messy sausage called American democracy, it's my job to tell you who got the most votes in the deciding states. Tuesday, in Ohio and New Mexico, it was John Kerry.

Thanks to Emily from Strangechord for forwarding along the Election Incident Reporting System. This sites allows you to see the total incidents recorded at EIRS and look at how many there are all the way down to the county level. As of 10:37pm there are 9529 reported incidents nationwide with Florida leading the way with 1611, and Pennsylvania second with 1239 incidents. This is a site to keep an eye on.

It's not even Election Day yet, and the Kerry-Edwards campaign is already down by a almost a million votes. That's because, in important states like Ohio, Florida and New Mexico, voter names have been systematically removed from the rolls and absentee ballots have been overlooked‹overwhelmingly in minority areas, like Rio Arriba County, New Mexico, where Hispanic voters have a 500 percent greater chance of their vote being "spoiled." Investigative journalist Greg Palast reports on the trashing of the election.

The Bush camp is apparently ecstatic that bin Laden timed his tape (see partial transcript at end of this post) so well:
"We want people to think 'terrorism' for the last four days," said a Bush-Cheney campaign official. "And anything that raises the issue in people's minds is good for us."A senior GOP strategist added, "anything that makes people nervous about their personal safety helps Bush." (see full text below)

It has been a bad few weeks for Bush with discoveries startling enough to kill, or at least stun, a normal candidate. But there is nothing normal about Bush. He just keeps plunging ahead, grunting and gasping, like one of the undead.
We learned that Bush wears a radio device at important events. This fact alone could explain his strange plodding movements and words, a creature waiting, eyes blinking mechanically, for each new word in its ear to register before reacting.

Well, Bush got most of his wish list of corporate tax reform, and signed a nifty $136 (+) Billion tax reform package. Forbes calls it "the most sweeping rewrite of corporate tax law in nearly two decades. One has to ask if this is a pay off for past corporate support, or whether it is a "pay it forward" for the next four years.

It has been said that people pretty much get the government they deserve. There is more than a little justice in the observation.
Pat Buchanan, long my choice as symbol for all that is wrong with America, has given a last-minute endorsement to George Bush's re-election. One is tempted to class his words, qualified as they are, with the grovelings of John McCain at Bush rallies.

Just got to pass this one along. Six cousins of the dear President say that "Blood is thinner than oil"and urge support of Kerry at Bush Relatives for Kerry.
"Bush Relatives for Kerry" grew out of a series of conversations that took place between a group of people that have two things in common: they are all related to George Walker Bush, and they are all voting for John Kerry. As the election approaches, we feel it is our responsibility to speak out about why we are voting for John Kerry, and to do our small part to help America heal from the sickness it has suffered since George Bush was appointed President in 2000. We invite you to read our stories, and please, don't vote for our cousin!
I watched the debate last night and after a ragged start it did pick up. Being in education, particularly at a community college, it was interesting to here Bush's take on our role - training the workforce of the 21st Century. I had hoped we were doing more than that.

I am posting this with permission, because it touched my heart, and because the message is so poignant and important.
It was October of 2000. My son, Jackson, my youngest child, just seven at the time was and still is a Yankee fan. In our family October has been for many seasons a time to celebrate. When you’re a Yankee fan the number of championship pennants and World Series victories is not a matter of guilt or shame. We take it as a part of the natural order. Baseball is a sport, a place and time where it is okay to root for one over the other, to wait for the mysteries of talent and physics to render one side victorious and the other demoralized, humble, and dejected. It is fine, within the context of most sporting events, not to root for the underdog, not to hope that kind principles prevail.

I'm just going to open this up for discussion. Last night Cheney and Edwards had their little moderated chat, and I must say I was not tremendously impressed by the performance of either one. You can check out the exaggerations and misinformation at FactCheck.org (not .com as Cheney cited) - though that site seems very busy this morning. I do think my favorite responses from Cheney were "I don't know where to start," and "The record speaks for itself." I truly wish that they had been forced to speak for their own views and positions rather than those of their running mates. The way it went was kind of a Bush - Kerry "debate" by proxy. It was interesting, that Edwards threw the votes against military weaponry back in Cheney's lap (as Cheney was Sec of Defense at that time) with Cheney's own recommendation to axe certain almost 80 systems. I guess "The record speaks for itself." Otherwise, I didn't see much to jump up and down about. Eiffel, like Lehr, successfully avoided asking about some of the greatest debacles - spun intelligence, forged documents, and a policy of torture (among other things).

Nothing tells us more about the odd political state of America than the recent presidential debate and reactions to it.
The American debates, of course, are not debates at all. They are more a set of joint press conferences, a staged opportunity for both candidates to repeat memorized lines in a cozy environment, protected by elaborate rules and an always-undemanding moderator. Still, once in a while, something manages to happen.

America's campaign for Emperor is becoming nasty.
What shameful accusations are being tossed around: an ambitious, privileged young John Kerry, who spent a brief stint in Vietnam beefing up the hero section of his resume, never actually did some of the things he claims or at least didn't do them under the circumstances he claims. Since his heroic deeds included chasing after a wounded man and shooting him in the back and skippering a machine gun-mounted speed boat that ran up and down rivers shooting peasants desperate enough to appear in their own fields, there is reason for concern.

Well, today Kerry announced Edwards as his running mate (I heaved a sigh of relief), and I saw a blurb of the latest Bush attack ad. It features John McCain, which is sad for starters, but it also shows the toppling of the statue of Saddam Hussein. I couldn't believe they had included that since the news is finally taking notice that Army Stage-Managed Fall of Hussein Statue (LA Times 7/3/04). While most of us who read the people's press already knew this, current reports are based on the Army's own internal study.

Recently, John Kerry and his wife held a barbecue at the Pennsylvania White House. Never heard of the Pennsylvania White House? It's actually the homestead of Kerry's wife, a white-columned mansion on a tailored estate outside Pittsburgh built from the proceeds of a billion cans of spaghetti and bottles of ketchup. Kerry wants everyone to know he's an ordinary guy so he's holding barbecues these days instead of crystal-and-candlelight dinners. People who normally never would get past the front gate have now been allowed on the rolled greens to chomp hot dogs.

Given its strutting brownshirt quality, here is a slogan that might well have been coined by America's most articulate political thug, Pat Buchanan.
But the slogan, with little waving-flag pictures, is being used for bumper stickers selling John Kerry. Good marketers know that you want an offering for every niche, so here's Kerry for the belly-over-the-belt, beer-belching, walrus-mustache set.
Niche marketing also explains goofy pieces about Kerry's military service versus that of Republican chicken hawks (for those unfamiliar, "chicken hawks" is an informal American political term for men who never fought yet advocate sending others off to war, a group largely, but not exclusively, consisting of Republicans). Never mind the moral obtuseness of opposing an armchair-psychopath like Bush with arguments in favor of a man who did his own killing, there's a weird market niche out there to be reached.

Do you find yourself feeling some trepidation in the run-up to the vote in November? You are not alone - I am with you. Many of us realize that the election of 2000 stunk to high heaven, and this one stinks before the first vote is cast. Florida has started another voter purge. The push is on for electronic voting even though there are all kinds of problems with the system. Then just to put a little adrenalin in your system the Whitehouse is expecting a terrorist attack, or series of them leading up to the election.
From the White House, a nightmare scenario"White House officials say they've got a "working premise" about terrorism and the presidential election: It's going to happen. "We assume," says a top administration official, "an attack will happen leading up to the election." And, he added, "it will happen here." There are two worst-case scenarios, the official says. The first posits an attack on Washington, possibly the Capitol, which was believed to be the target of the 9/11 jet that crashed in Pennsylvania. Theory 2: smaller but more frequent attacks in Washington and other major cities leading up to the election. To prepare, the administration has been holding secret antiterrorism drills to make sure top officials know what to do. "There was a sense," says one official involved in the drills, "of mass confusion on 9/11. Now we have a sense of order." Unclear is the political impact, though most Bushies think the nation would rally around the president. "I can tell you one thing," adds the official sternly, "we won't be like Spain," which tossed its government days after the Madrid train bombings."

This has got to be a new low in political campaigning - Shoot 'em Up, Vote for Bush from Wired News (4/16/04). The campaign has turned decidedly bizarre with the addition of a video game in which a gun-toting George Bush repels "invaders" from the White House. Believe it or not, this is sponsored by the Republican National Committee.
Mary Ellen Grant, an RNC spokeswoman, said: "We contract through a vendor for our Internet ads, and clearly they've chosen a site with a number of Internet games on it." She would not say whether the RNC will ask for the ad to be pulled from the site.
This is definitely as "see it to believe it" piece, but you better check it quick as it might get pulled. You can go to Miniclip.com to play the game Bush Shoot-out - Featuring George Bush and Condoleezza Rice. The game is rated for 14 and over.
he interactive game has you playing George Bush as a machine gun firing President independently repeling a mass of camo-dressed invaders from the oval office. Bush (you) gets pinned down by machine gun fire while a platoon of invaders fire at him/you. I guess that "security" doesn't work well even within the Bush White House.

While rumors float that Howard Dean may pursue an independent Presidential run, Nader announces presidential bid (BBC, 2/22/04). I don't know about you, but this surprised me as I thought that the Greens (and Nader) had decided to not run in this election. I am totally supportive for expansion of voice and issues, so I have been dismayed as Mosley-Braun, Clark, and now Dean have dropped out of the running. I am very glad that Kucinich and Sharpton have stayed in. Given that, on one hand I feel it is a good move for Nader to add his voice. On the other, I think that it may harm the Greens, and Nader's environmental and social justice voice over the long haul.

The Reuters' headline reads Pentagon Dumps Vulnerable Internet Voting System (2/06/04).
The Pentagon heeded the advice of cyber-security experts who urged in a Jan. 21 report the program be abandoned because it was impossible to create a voting system with current personal computers and the Internet that would stop hackers or terrorists from tampering with election results.

Language shapes peoples' perception of the world and politicians know this. Since the 1990s and the Republicans have turned repeatedly to Dr. Frank Luntz to help craft their message. According to his bio on the Herbert Walker Agency Site (a speakers group), Luntz is:
- "one of the most honored political and communication professionals in America today." ... - "USA Today labeled him one of the nine most influential minds in the GOP, Newsweek called him one of the three primary "engineers" of the 1994 Republican landslide,";- "has been on Nightline more than any other pollster in the past three years."; Dr. Luntz, famous among campaign pros for his research on language and politics, is one of the most innovative marketers of political ideas. He has served as an adviser to New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, and numerous candidates in this country and abroad."
- "He was one of the strategic architects of the Republican landslide in 1994 that gave Republicans control of the House of Representatives for the first time in 40 years and made Newt Gingrich speaker. Dr. Luntz had a key role in creating Gingrich's Contract with America."
In short, Luntz is the premier word smith and propaganda shaper of the GOP - and of the Bush Administration.

The above link includes a fund raising appeal from Marc Racicot - the Bush-Cheney 2004 Campaign Chairman and Chair of the Repulican National Committee. In the appeal, Mr. Raciot claims that the Democrats are making "vicious personal attacks" on President Bush, and that "Billionaire liberals" are out to "pervert the election process." The appeal is to start a "grassroots" campaign by people sending in their "$25, $50, $75, $100 or whatever you can afford to give today?"

The following 10 actions are what everyone should start doing now, before the Presidential race heats up. My suggestion: print out this page, start with the first action and work your way down the list. Once you've taken the action, check it off and move on to the next one.

My guess is that like many of you, I have been supporting multiple candidates for the 2004 elections. One of those I have been supporting has been Howard Dean. I got an email yesterday that maybe some of you got as well. It has an invitation to a "VIP Reception" which will cost you $1000 or more. Or you can go the the "General Reception" for $100 ($$25 with student ID). This smacks of the same old process of "buying access and voice" to me. It seems like politics as we have come to detest it. I am sorely disappointed and have informed the campaign of that fact. The entire invitation is in the extended entry for your information, or if you have the bucks to buy access to the VIP reception.

Thanks to Emily at Strangechord for bringing Wage Slave Journal to my attention. This is a very good site, but it has added something that I have thought about (though not in the same fashion). Many of you got the chance to see Dennis Kucinich speak during his electrifying visit to Portland and now is the time to use that energy to make the campaign take off in Oregon! Please come if you want to take an active role in coordinating the Kucinich campaign in the Portland area. We’ll be asking people to serve on various committees and commit to take action locally for the campaign. Bring your experience, skills, and enthusiasm and be ready to take action.
If you have any questions about the meeting or the Kucinich campaign in Oregon please contact Will in the national headquarters at [email protected] or by calling (866) 413-3664."
Dennis Kucinich was here today down at Kafoury's law offices. It was a gathering of volunteers and supporters and they expected a "handful" of people. My guess is that well over 200 showed up, and there were 40 or 50 folks who couldn't get in because the space was packed - literally packed into a space that might have accommodated 30 comfortably. Those who couldn't get in were upset and felt excluded. A reasonable feeling and someone from the campaign should have come and explained the situation.
