Tom Cruise - "the world's most powerful celebrity" according to Forbes Magazine - was unceremoniously sacked in 2006. His dismissal was particularly shocking for the fact that it was carried out not by his immediate employer, Paramount Studios, but rather by Paramount's parent company, Viacom. Viacom's notoriously irascible CEO Sumner Redstone - who owns a long list of media companies including CBS, Nickelodeon, MTV, and VH1 - said that Cruise had committed "creative suicide" following a spate of manic public activity. It was a sacking worthy of an episode of The Apprentice.

Hold the champagne: Peeling away the layers of the Greatest Show on Earth

The Obama victory presents the authentic Left with a genuine challenge, one just as tricky as if John McCain had been pronounced the victor in the latest exercise in American managed elections. At a point when the Empire's massive moral, political, and economic crimes had begun to threaten the continuing legitimacy of capitalist rule; when the old machinery of rhetoric and delusions that allow the US corporate oligarchy to rule pretty much undisturbed by the demands and needs of the masses was beginning to show signs of fatigue, they seem to have found a savior in Barack Obama, the ideal politician to confound skeptics at home and replenish luster to the name of America abroad.

Barack Obama is the President Elect of the United States. This is a historic moment for the United States, but it does not mean that the problems of our past and present have ended.

This is an exceptional time. I admit that while I watched the returns, and then the projected win for Obama, I did so with tears and a lump in my throat. I refused to relax until McCain have presented what was an exceptional concession speech, and Obama gave his acceptance speech.

A Look at Palin by a Real Alaskan

Share/Save/Bookmark | Sphere: Related Content

I recommend looking at the editorial by Seth Kantner that was published in The Alaska Dispatch - That Sarah Palin Is One Unreal Alaskan. It is excellent, and here is a teaser:

I'm sitting on my bearskin chair beside the woodstove, in Kotzebue Alaska, fifty miles above the Arctic Circle, while outside the ocean begins to freeze over. Inside I have about 49 things piling up to say to you, America.

I'm an Alaskan -- born in an igloo, enjoy whale muktuk, all that -- and in case you aren't sick of our state by now, I'll start off with an apology for one of our residents: Sarah Palin.

We Alaskans are not generally so magazine-pretty like her, nor are we so confrontational and vapid. Most of us don't have those peachy cheeks -- we have sunburn, windburn and frostbite. Our fingernails are dirty from actually gutting moose, not yakking about it. Our hands are chapped from picking thousands of salmon out of nets, not holding one up for the camera.

Having said that, here in Alaska we are accustomed to getting jobs we're not qualified to fill. In our far-flung villages and towns we have big money surrounded by big wilderness; the combination causes warped career opportunities. Sort of an Edge of Nowhere phenomenon --cousin to the Bridge to Nowhere one.

The hardest thing for Americans to do right now in this presidential election season is to fight distraction and, instead, focus on the failure of all three branches of the federal government. And also to resist the propaganda masquerading as patriotic obligation that voting will fundamentally fix the federal government. The real lesson of American history is that things have turned so ugly that electing a new president and many new members of Congress will at best provide band-aids when what is needed is nothing less than what Thomas Jefferson wisely said our nation would need periodically: a political revolution.

Both McCain and Palin are claiming they are "mavericks." It is an interesting claim - particularly from a person from the southwestern United States (McCain is one of the Senators from Arizona). I am sure, that there is an assumption that "maverick" means "independent" or "not conforming to the rules," but that is usually applied as an adjective - not a noun. "Maverick" more typically, and particularly in the southwest, is a calf that has become separated from its mother and becomes the property of the first person to "brand" it.

But with another trillion dollars that we now must borrow at higher costs because of the meltdown of the financial sector, solidifying our position as the greatest debtor nation, Americans have little to be proud of. Our government and politicians as well as the corporate state have failed us. What do our young people and future generations have to look forward to? Be prepared to eat your cats and dogs.

Savage animal slaughterer that she is, it's apt that Sarah Palin has now brutally plunged a razor-sharp knife into the very heart of the seemingly invincible doubts concerning her capacity to be Vice-President of the United States. Wielding her chutzpah with the awe-inspiring deftness with which she employs her gun or rifle when hunting defenseless wolves or moose, she appeared on 20/20 and left our skepticism writhing on the ground in agony, immersed in its own blood and gasping its last.

I just contributed to the Defenders Of Wildlife ad campaign to air a commercial on Governor Sarah Palin's support of aerial wolf and bear hunting in Alaska. I have included the commercial below, but those who detest wanton slaughter may not want to view it.

We have lived with Cheney's enthusiasm over "canned" hunts. I do not want Vice President who promotes slaughter.

From Defenders of Wildlife

Defenders Action Fund underscored its endorsement by launching a new TV ad about Palin's environmental record, focusing on her support for the aerial hunting of wolves, a cruel practice she actively champions in Alaska. The program licenses private citizens to fly airplanes and shoot wolves from the air or chase them to exhaustion before landing and shooting them point blank. The gunners then sell the pelts of the animals they kill for profit. The program also targets grizzly and black bears. The ad, which will air in presidential swing states, shows a new and extreme side to the Governor, which has yet to be fully explored in the media.

"Sarah Palin not only condones the aerial hunting of wolves and bears, she actively promotes it," continued Schlickeisen. "She has even gone so far as to propose a bounty of $150 for every severed left foreleg of a wolf the hunters can produce. Her promotion of this ghastly and unscientific program - which she pursues while simultaneously suing the federal government to eliminate protections for the imperiled polar bear - offers voters a glimpse of her values and character that is quite different from the picture carefully crafted by the McCain-Palin campaign's professional speechwriters. It should also provide voters with a good idea of what a McCain-Palin administration's approach to stewardship of our nation's natural resources would be like. Americans deserve to know about this real side of Sarah Palin before they make up their minds about her.

I confess. I believe there is a ruling class that sustains the two-party plutocracy running the nation for the benefit of the rich and corporate class. Their broad strategy is deception and delusion. Tactically, they use government, the mainstream media, the financial services sector, funding of politicians and the two major parties, and many other parts of the culture and economy to maintain their power and control.

McCain does a good job with the appearance of a boyishly honest man.

Palin: A Social Conservative's Dream

By Rowan Wolf

Sarah Palin seems like a good choice for social conservatives. She is vehemently anti-abortion, favors teaching creationism, is staunchly against same-sex relationship recognition and benefits. She is strongly in favor of the death penalty and unfettered gun ownership, wants to open ANWR to oil drilling, and does not support energy alternatives to oil and natural gas.

In short, she largely reinforces McCain's social stances. I would not consider her a "feminist" though her allusions to Ferarro and Clinton imply that she is. I imagine women will not be voting for her "just because she's a woman." If the choice was made to attract Hillary supporters, it is not likely to succeed because of Palin's stance on the issues.

The choice indicates that the "change" McCain represents is to play to a social and politically conservative base.

It is troubling that after McCain's emphasis on the importance of experience in the Presidency, that he would choose someone with virtually no significant national or international experience. If a self-described "hockey mom" with a BS in journalism, and two years as a Governor, is ready to be President of the United States, then that opens up the field significantly.

CHARISMATIC, ARTICULATE, SMOOTH, AND INTELLIGENT, Barrack Obama is the living embodiment of his vague, ethereal, and tantalizing messages of "hope" and "change." To the millions upon millions of US Americans desperate to purge the naked imperialism and blatant criminality of the Bush administration from the White House, Obama IS hope and change. Yet like many establishment liberals before him, Obama is no cure for the malignant creep toward fascism plaguing our nation. If elected, at best he will merely serve to postpone the inevitable a bit.

It Is Time to Take a Stand

I have remained officially neutral since Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama are the last two standing in the Democratic Presidential campaign. (Sorry Mike Gravel. I respect you but you are not a serious candidate, but I appreciate your taking the opportunity to campaign for a Title VII convention). However, I am at a point where remaining neutral violates my basic principles. For that reason I am announcing my support for Barack Obama.

Because he wants to salvage American democracy and help Americans, Ralph Nader is running for president again. He deserves the support of all Americans that see themselves as progressives, dissidents, independents, and patriots who want to remove the stranglehold of the two-party plutocracy on our political system.

Never have so many hoped for so much because of rollicking rhetoric and pulsating platitudes. A tsunami of hope has plunged America into electoral euphoria. In its path is the wreckage of critical thinking about what ails the US and what bold, revolutionary actions are needed. Barry Obama has accomplished semantic alchemy, turning justified but grim distrust and outrage with government and politics into hallelujah hope. But most hope never materializes and is a terrible predictor of reality.

Why I AM Voting

Some of the authors whose work is shared at Uncommon Thought argue their reasons why they are NOT voting. However, this does not mean that I agree with them. I will be voting, and I will continue to vote. I will steal a few lines to explain why that is my choice.

An Open Letter to Hillary Clinton from a Wellesley College Alumna

The following is reposted from Speaking Truth to Power.

Editor's Note: This article is written by Linn Cohen-Cole. The issues regarding Monsanto are real and urgent, and the author has done a good job discussing the process and support for Monsanto by the Bill Clinton administration. However, most of the discussion focuses on Bill Clinton and not Hillary Clinton. People can determine for themselves how much of the blame should by extension go to Hillary for her husband's actions. At this point I am not endorsing or trashing either Clinton nor Obama. However, I am also not making the assumption that in voting for Hillary we are voting for Bill. The Republicans got that lesson in voting for baby Bush thinking they were getting daddy Bush.

For those who are regular readers of Uncommon Thought, you will know it is virtually unheard of that I would preface a contribution I choose to publish - and there have been some pretty controversial ones. I issue this statement because I feel that while the information is critical, that the blurring of Hillary and Bill is a danger we face, and something to be on guard against.

Three Left Standing

With the resignation of Edwards from the Democratic presidential race, we still have three candidates left standing Clinton, Gravel, and Obama. Oh, you didn't know that there was still a third candidate? Most of the country never knew that there were still five candidates after Biden and Richardson stepped out in Iowa.

My purpose in writing today is not to endorse any of the remaining candidates, but to express my dismay at the watering down of our democracy by the media.

Kucinich Withdraws from Campaign

My preferred Presidential candidate, Dennis Kucinich, announced the end on his Presidential campaign today. I was not really surprised after his being totally shut out of corporate media coverage - no debates and no news. There is no way to even influence the discussion if there is a total shutout on the message. That silencing is yet another manifestation of the loss of our democracy as it was backed by both a state Supreme Court (Nevada), and the FCC.

However, Kucinich is facing another attack. In an email two days before announcing his decision he requested help with funding his Congressional race. He reported that a massive influx of corporate funds into the race in his district was threatening to remove him from Congress as well.

The combination of the two issues sealed his decision to withdraw from the Presidential campaign. Under the circumstances, I sadly agree. I also believe that it is critical to not lose his voice and leadership from the United States Congress. If you have a few bucks to spare, or can offer some other form of support, I encourage you to contribute to his Congressional campaign at http://kucinich.us/.

If you already contributed to his Presidential campaign, you may still contribute to his Congressional campaign. The monies are separate.

Keep up the fight Dennis!

While there may be diversity of aspect in the "top" Democratic Presidential candidates, diversity of perspective is becoming hard to find. The Nevada caucus has marked a turning point in the Presidential campaign - particularly with the debacle of the NBC-MSNBC "debate."

The good news is the huge pent up public demand for political change. The bad news is that presidential candidates have made a mockery of the concept of change while ignoring true political reforms. Missing are details about fixing the corrupt, dysfunctional political system and restoring balance among the three branches of government and between the states and the federal government.

The United States political process bears an uncanny resemblance to mainstream filmmaking. Elections and speeches are scripted to the letter, politicians put on a tirelessly rehearsed act, catering endlessly to the whims of the target audience. A successful Hollywood filmmaker can't afford to risk raising issues in a way that don't immediately reflect audience sympathies. Good politicians vying for votes are similar in that they speak according to the already existing expectations -- and prejudices -- of the voting public.

ABC's Debate

Let me start by saying that I am mad as hell that ABC excluded Kucinich. That being said, I also felt that the approach was biased. Beyond that, I thought that Edwards "won" and that the tit-for-tat between Clinton and Obama was a snore. Richardson made a few good points, but I wish he had spent more time addressing the questions raised that tooting his accomplishments. I know he doesn't get much coverage, but one time through the resume would have been adequate.

Change Yes, Ron Paul No

Ron Paul's obnoxious supporters like more traditional political activists can spin and delude themselves about election results. But the Iowa caucus results could not be clearer: The vast national desire for political change is manifesting itself through support for both Democratic and Republican change-candidates. Despite Paul being flush with money and having a large number of workers in Iowa, he was solidly rejected as the leading change agent.

Ron Paul is grabbing a lot of attention in this campaign season, from his vocal opposition to the Iraq war to his $6 million one day fund raising blitz. In fact, there is a lot to admire about Ron Paul. He sticks to his principles, he appears honest, and he is impassioned. Those qualities draw the disillusioned among both Democrats and Republicans, and Independents looking for a candidate. However, while his strong speech regarding Iraq is attractive, it is his principles that need examination.

All of us have just about had our fill of unconstitutional and corrupt actions by our representatives in Congress and, considering their current extremely low "favorable rating" from the public, this is an ideal time for the public to take charge and dislodge them from office. This should be done en mass because they are jointly responsible for laws passed on their watch, and all recently passed legislation that I am familiar with has been in the interest of the rich patrons sponsoring their campaigns.

Here comes another inconvenient truth. Despite all the attention to Oprah for Obama and the pundit blabbering about the Democratic primary horse race the outcome has been predetermined. What people do not want to know is that power elites control what the Democratic ticket will be. When the primaries end the winner will be the reigning plutocracy.

Living on Earth and Grist and Grist sponsored a Democratic candidate forum in Los Angeles on Global Warming and America's Energy Future. Only Kucinich, Edwards, and Clinton bothered to show up - which dramatically narrows the candidate field for me. Here are links to their YouTube opening statements.

Dennis Kucinich
John Edwards
Hillary Clinton

Grist also has a "How Green Is Your Candidate?" section in the middle of their front page. It includes both Republican and Democratic candidates. It gives a nice summation of their views and policies they support.

I watched the CNN Democratic Debate the other night. Don't worry, I am not going to give yet another analysis. I supported Kucinich in 2004, and I still support him. It is really frustrating that he gets so little media coverage. His pushing for the impeachment of Cheney was virtually blacked out. As is his Constitutional Initiative Convention.

Well, having one of my bouts of insomnia last night I was watching CSPAN at around 1am. The "underdog" Democratic Presidential candidates were getting their opportunity to address the DNC. Richardson was more interesting than I thought he'd be, but then came a new name - Mike Gravel. Mike Gravel (emphasis on the vel). He got going and I was quite impressed.
