A Journey To The End Of Empire: It is always darkest right before it goes completely black

"When the poet stands at nadir the world must indeed be upside-down. If the poet can no longer speak for society, but only for himself, then we are at the last ditch."-- Excerpt from, The Time of the Assassins, a study of Rimbaud, by Henry Miller

BrazilPowerOutage.jpg There is no reality-based argument denying this: The present system, as defined by the neoliberal economic order, is as destructive to the balance of nature as it is to the individual, both body and psyche. One's body grows obese while Arctic ice and wetlands shrink. Biodiversity decreases as psyches are commodified by ever-proliferating, corporatist/consumer state banality.

Rockstroh.jpgI'm in Atlanta, Georgia, at present, among the scent of pine trees and the reek of southern denial. The moribund economy has thwarted the city's manic drive to silence its resentful ghosts by means of constant motion ... Below the lilting southern accents here, one detects rage ... Not simply the ubiquitous hate-speak on right-wing talk radio. But an animus bred by truth-deferred ... that southern pride is a lie of the mind -- a blown banner ... foisted skyward to distract the minds of my fellow southerners from the ground level truths of a system rigged to enrich the privileged few and keep the many working for their benefit. (How do you think they filled the ranks of the Confederate Army to kill and die for the rights of rich men to own slaves.)

A Wing and a Prayer

PeaceDove.jpg This has been a very difficult year for me. I have been very ill and diagnosed with Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension (PAH or PH), which is progressive fatal disease where high pressure in the pulmonary artery leads to right sided heart failure and destruction of the lungs. The only cure is a heart-lung transplant, but that is a different story for another day.

This has been a year of hard lessons on how much control we actually have in our lives, and the preciousness of each day. Every day is a gift and life is fleeting. For me, the root of what I have learned for me is that love is at the heart of everything. The love of my partner and friends ... my dogs ... and conversely the love I have for them, for the sentient beings which share our Mother Earth. That love has fueled by years of activism and my teaching. It is my passion and my dream that we, as a species, can learn to honor each other, the non-human beings, and this planet.

So this is my wish for you all ... We live life on a wing and a prayer so let your love and caring show. If we can all do this, then this may be the beginning of a year where we move forward in embracing our real possibility; heal the wounds of war and hate; and embrace the preciousness of the life on Mother Earth.

p.s. The Pulmonary Hypertension Association is a great resource and support for those having PH - and those who know someone with PH.

If for nothing else, it is impossible to rationally argue against faith in biblical 'chosenness.' However, if one accepts the underlying premise that other people believe in their being chosen then the idea of chosenness can be worked with. This appears to be what the authors of this new book "The Chosen Peoples" attempt to examine.

TeaPartyCaucus30681.jpg In trying to understand how so many Americans adore people like Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity, Sarah Palin and Rush Limbaugh I have come to this critical understanding: Poorly educated, terribly informed, intellectually deficient and downright stupid people need idols. They feel angry, frustrated, ignored, cheated and disillusioned by so much going on in American society. They find the emotional, political and philosophical rants by talk show, loud mouth celebrities matching and justifying their feelings. Of course, those celebrities work hard to fan the flames of all that unhappiness and discontent, and also perpetuate ignorance and hate. They sell stupidity to gullible dummies, teaching them who to blame for their misery.

Andrew Bacevich has written another authoritative and well written book examining the U.S. military and its influence on the United States. His writing - here as with his earlier works [1] - is provocative, challenging, well researched, informative, and logically argued. Only someone thoroughly imbued with the rhetoric of U.S. benign stewardship of global affairs and ignorant of many key events within recent and current U.S. foreign affairs might be able to ignore Bacevich's presentations and contentions about U.S. foreign policy and U.S. militarism.

For years I muttered mentally to myself about the insanity of Americans electing George W. Bush president. Now I go through the same agony about the craziness of the nation electing Barack Obama president. As much as I thought Bush was a manipulated second-rate politician that carried out the terribly destructive policies pushed by Cheney and other conservative corporate shills, now I feel equally angry that so many voters fell for the slick rhetoric and lies of Obama. Disgust produces public thirst for change and Obama was wickedly brilliant at selling change. When voters are so easily victimized what does democracy amount to?

G20's Central Role? As a Lightning Rod

Share/Save/Bookmark | Sphere: Related Content

By Walden Bello, Originally published at Foreign Policy in Focus.

The G20 is going to be around for some time. But it will probably be as ineffective as the G8 in stabilizing global capitalism. Probably the main accomplishment of the G8 was to focus attention on itself as some sort of executive committee of global capitalism, the existence of which drew hundreds of thousands of protesters to Genoa in June 2001, an delegitimizing event from which the group never recovered.

The G20, a Clinton era initiative that was rescued from oblivion by Bush II at the beginning of the latest financial crisis and later promoted by Obama to coordinate global capitalism's response to the crisis is classic cooptation: bring in the big boys from the South like China, India, and Brazil, along with a few others, to give them a strong stake in the current global system. But as they assemble in Toronto, the group is divided, over the extent of financial regulation and over whether or not to continue the stimulus programs that are pushing so many governments to register massive fiscal deficits. Endorsement of minimal financial regulation and an informal agreement to disagree over the stimulus question are likely to be the vapid results of this latest summit of the world's so-called powerhouse economies. The structural fissures of global capital have become too great to be papered over by this presumptive executive committee.

But hey, the protesters have been given another opportunity to assemble against the ailing system of globalized capitalism, like we were by the London summit in 2008 and the Pittsburgh meeting in September 2009. Nothing beats the G20 meeting as a centralized focus of anti-capitalist protest.

Ironically, this has become the main function of the G8 and G20 meetings: to unite global opinion against an outmoded system of economic organization and advance the process of delegitimizing it. Let's turn Toronto into another Genoa, but let's hope this is not the last G20 Summit.

Barack in the Crosshairs: Is the military threatening to kill Obama?

By John Hankey. Republished with permission from Speaking Truth to Power.

There is a financial oligarchy in this country, that tries, by every means available to it, to control all essential political activity, including the education of the citizens, their thinking, the information available to them, etc.  Some politicians genuinely see themselves as public servants, and wish to serve the public good.  They can give passionate and inspiring speeches, spoken truly from the heart - but they know good and well that if they want to get elected they must carry out the agenda of the elite.   All politicians, even those trying to make society more fair, must be brought to heel, one way or another.  It is not a simple game.  And the tools used to control politicians are varied:  controlling the information they receive is often effective; some times bribery or a scandal is necessary.  It was necessary to shoot John and Robert Kennedy in the head.  The bloody deaths of the Kennedy brothers sent a message to every politician that still echoes today.  And I think the evidence shows that Obama received a reminder of this message recently.

Admittedly, I never was a fan of President Obama, either as a candidate or now as president. I always suspected, based on his dependence on corporate money and his lackluster career as a state and US senator that he would, ultimately, prove to be a big disappointment to the millions of Democrats, liberals, progressives and independents that fell for his slick rhetoric. He has always been too much a part of the two-party plutocracy to ever be a true reformer. Here are some of the main reasons that he should cut his ties to corporate and political elites, announce that he will not run for reelection and, instead, become the populist, reformist president the nation desperately needs:

Imperial inertia

By Jim Miles. Republished from the Palestine Chronicles

The task of saving and reviving humanity oft times appears overwhelming when studied from a fully global perspective: occupations, wars, and terror abounds; starvation, disease, poverty, homelessness, accompany the wars and are also an integral part of global economic structures; of which, the current debt crises robs the working class of their wealth while the elites roll in the beneficence of corporate/government welfare. To top all that off is the rush towards global environmental changes, changes that are occurring at ever faster - and faster than predicted - rates, while governments put forth only mild platitudes acknowledging that there is a problem of some kind, placing weak futuristic recommendations out to try and placate the scientists and concerned public. It is enough to render reviewing books a seemingly worthless task when nothing changes and the inertia of the U.S. and western corporate/government/military liaisons continues to steer the ship of state, apparently without working radar or rudder, on its destructive course through this complex web of problems.

There is a thematic belief that the flu has been made into a media bonanza. This, in my opinion, is a very dangerous response that will likely come back and bite us.

It is no wonder that there is so little love in the world today and we are where we are. Within all the levels of divisions which one experiences in a lifetime, what tends to have been lost is the trust in others, the belief in ourselves and with that the love that people and humanity so desperately need.

We all learn that the message depends on what is received and not just what is sent. Our intent does not take away the harm of the message. This is the case with the Delonas cartoon in the 2/18/2009 New York Post. The cartoon depicts to police having just shot dead a chimpanzee (lying in blood on the sidewalk). The bubble reads "They'll have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill." The article is unabashedly racist - protests to the contrary aside.

The Economic Crisis is a Security Threat

As I have noted a number of times (see links at end of article), the economic crisis is a global crisis. We are in a world of a global economic system that has been allowed to emerge with virtually no oversight or control. It is a system that has been structured to benefit richer nations and the corporations to which they are married. As nations pour trillions of dollars into the maw of the crisis, there is little (if any) improvement in the situation. This is because national strategies are analogous to trying to haul water to a fire in a bucket that is full of holes. The money poured in simply "leaks out" to the global financial "market." Yet, there is no plan (that I have seen) of a coordinated international strategy to stop the "leaks" and bring the global financial market to heel.

I have issues with their being a special office for "faith" and community organizations. I don't buy the argument that the funding of service provision can't be handled the same way that other groups receive grants/funding to provide services. If we are going to have such an office, all organizations should meet the same hiring and service provision requirements of any other organization. At issue is whether faith-based groups need to follow federal nondiscrimination guidelines that all others must meet that receive federal funding.

We live in a world where the belief seems to be "big is best." Part of this is a natural consequence of capitalism where the end game is "winner take all." Corporations get bigger and bigger with ongoing mergers. Financial institutions, which were already huge, are shrinking into an ever smaller collection of even larger institutions. We started bailing selected corporations because they were "too big to fail." That rationale magnifies as the few remaining gobble up their competitors. No one with public voice seems to raise the question "What are we doing?"

Operation Barbarossa, the Nazi invasion of Russia in June 1941, unleashed 4.5 million highly trained and motivated soldiers on a 2,000-mile front. It soon engulfed all major cities and towns in the European part of the Soviet Union, cutting a horrendous swath of devastation wherever it reached. The Russo-German struggle on the Eastern Front still ranks as the most devastating war in the annals of history. Although initially dreadfully unprepared, it was the Soviet armies that paid the price and eventually broke the back of the Nazi military machine. In the Cold War atmosphere Western publics, fed a constant diet of chauvinist and anticommunist propaganda chiefly conveyed via Hollywood films and other mainstream media, rarely heard about the dimensions of the Soviet sacrifice. Not surprisingly, for far too many people in the US, it's the allies who almost singlehandedly won the war after their landings in Normandy.

The last day has been one of panic and threat for those in Mumbai (formerly Bombay), and has resulted in over 100 people dead and over 200 injured. While speculation is running rampant on who was behind the multi-pronged attack, there is little confirmed information. The group reportedly taking credit for the 10 simultaneous attacks is the "Deccan Mujahedin." The group itself is not known to anti-terrorist experts, but "Deccan" refers to a region of India known as the Deccan Plateau. Mumbai resides at the edge of the region. Regardless, it is sobering that apparently a handful of determined people with weapons seemed able to hold one of that largest cities in the world hostage.

Another Earth Day rolls around and the planet is heading towards environmental catastrophe. Seems like one day a year is not enough to counter 364 days a year of destruction. Earth ... that ungrateful snob .. just doesn't recognize the wholeheartedness of our regard. Must say I am a bit despondent over the state of the planet. I know, that more people are waking up, but they are also still hypnotized by the propaganda - like biofuels and a "sustainability" that allows increasing industrial and consumer growth every year.

Perhaps on this Earth Day we should encourage thought and meditation. Perhaps we should focus on sending healing energy to our home. Perhap[s we should visualize a planet that is lush and healthy and where the human rodents really do love their Mother.

It is pretty clear that there needs to be a change of heart and mind, because changing direction seems impossible without it.

So this Earth Day, let's encourage people to connect to the earth beneath their feet (under the cement); the wind upon their faces, and the moss growing through the crack in the sidewalk. Let's encourage people to look for those examples of the unrelenting will towards life that are all around us.

Austin Miller was a 15 year old writer and artist cut down by a Tri-Met bus in Beaverton, Oregon. Austin was a member of our family. He was very aware and involved in bike safety issues. That did not save him from death, but an article he wrote for his school paper (the Savant) a year before his death may raise awareness. His article "Please do not run me over" was published under his pen name "Charlie Elsewhere" and is republished below.

Three Left Standing

With the resignation of Edwards from the Democratic presidential race, we still have three candidates left standing Clinton, Gravel, and Obama. Oh, you didn't know that there was still a third candidate? Most of the country never knew that there were still five candidates after Biden and Richardson stepped out in Iowa.

My purpose in writing today is not to endorse any of the remaining candidates, but to express my dismay at the watering down of our democracy by the media.

America is a Democracy?

By: Richard Backus of Uncensored Opinions

Joel Hirschhorn, in recent articles on OpEdNews has encouraged the American public to petition for a constitutional convention under Article V of the constitution in order to rectify the ever-increasing creation of laws harming the interests of the working classes of the U.S. His article, "An Open Letter to John Edwards" supported Mr. Edwards' opinion that America has become a country of two nations, the rich and the poor, which I call the Privileged and the People. Many people believe that the Constitution of the U.S. established a democracy in which all citizens had an equal say in the running of the government and in the creation of suitable laws. This is simply not true. The Constitution simply set up a republican form of government based upon a separation of powers between congress, the judiciary, and the executive. Nowhere do the words "democracy'' or "democratic" appear in this document, which is the sole basis of our federal laws.

On September 11, 2001 a series of horrendous events happened. Planes brought down two buildings of the World trade Center complex in New York City; the Pentagon was hit; and another crashed in a Pennsylvania field. It was a shock to the systems and psyches of the people of the United States and the world. It has been repeated more times than I can count the "world changed forever." Personally, I think that is a grandiose claim, but it set in motion a series of decisions and events that continue to the present.

China ranks number two (behind Japan) as the largest holder of U.S. Treasury bonds. So when China threatens to sell off its holdings, it should be big news. Instead, we get the esteemed Senator Graham stating:

"would advise our Chinese trading partners to work with us to achieve meaningful currency reform rather than issuing draconian threats. Congress has been incredibly patient on this issue, and the consequences of inaction without real reform are too great to many sectors of our economy." (Wa. Post)

Yes, the above article is written in 2007. Yes, Daniel Ortega is the president of Nicaragua. Yes, this is the same Ortega who was the head of the Sandinistas. So, it is not too surprising that U.S. policy has (not) shifted so much that Ortega might have "strained" relations with the United States - particularly when you throw in warming relations with Iran.

Iraq is teetering on the edge, but this one is not into civil war. Iraq could find itself at war with Turkey. It is stunning to imagine that a nation in name only; with (reportedly) fewer than 10,000 soldiers "combat capable;" living under a foreign occupation and an increasingly bloody struggle for power; could find itself having to defend its "sovereignty" against Turkey.

The shakiness of the Musharraf government should be of primary concern to the U.S.

After the horrendous events of September 11, 2001, George Bush claimed that the "terrorists" attacked us because of "our way of life." In justifying the Gulf War I, George W. Bush also claimed we were defending "our way of life." Launching the "war of terrorism" (which embraces both Afghanistan and Iraq) was to protect "our way of life." In Donald Rumsfeld's exit speech, he warns the world that the U.S. is not reluctant "to defend our way of life." I would really appreciate hearing their idea of "our way of life."

And Gas Prices Start To Rise

Isn't it just a coincidence that gas prices started jumping up all the sudden? On Tuesday, my regular gas station had unleaded for $2.22 a gallon. By Thursday morning it had jumped to $2.38 a gallon. That is a sixteen cent jump. According to Daily Fuel Gauge Report Yesterday's national average was $2.21 and today's is $2.17. I guess that the oil companies didn't want to wait to long after holding them down for the Republicans until after the election. Don't be fooled - there are no new crises. The OPEC decision to cut supply has been ongoing. There have continued to be oil workers kidnapped in Niger on an ongoing basis. In fact, Kuwait even had an explosion and had to shut down a 200,000 bpd refinery. Nothing looked "more positive" in the run up to the election. Nothing looks "more negative" now. How high will they go to make up for the "lost profits?"

While both Israel and Hizbullah claimed victory in the recent 33 day war, for Israel it was a loss. Superior military strength and weaponry did not shock an awe Hizbullah into laying down their arms. The mood in Israel from all reports is tending distinctly away from Olmert, but recent events seem to be leading Israel to a more extreme posture - not a more moderate one.

The Pentagon has announced its decision to mothball NORAD after spending $700 million since 2001 to upgrade its warning systems. The staff will be moved to Peterson Airforce Base. The reason given for the closure: "a missile attack from China or Russia is very unlikely," says NORAD commander Admiral Keating. If the US is not expecting a missile attack, and therefore closing NORAD, why was Star Wars revived in 2005? The space-based missile defense system has already cost billions of dollars Since 1993, at least $92 billion has gone into the system. Missile attack is apparently not a US concern. Just remember that when the budget season rolls around again.

How To Honor U.S. Veterans?

Today is Memorial Day. As it has approached, my personal dilemma has haunted me as it does every year - how to honor those who have died serving the country. The root of this problem is that I do not believe that they died serving country, but special interests. I also know that, overwhelmingly, those who served believed they were fighting for their country and defending the rights we enjoy. My dilemma is heightened by the more often repeated "they died for so we could be free," and "they fought with honor." My guess is that veterans who now struggle with the reality of the reasons that sent them into "harms way," and who have taken a stand for peace, fight an internal conflict I can only imagine.

Then, on Tuesday night, the GOP decides that another $70 billion in tax cuts sounds like a good idea. Those tax cuts will benefit those who live on investments and those earning over $5 million a year (the top 1/10 of one percent - which includes Cheney by the way). The Senate is considering the provision today. I think it would be a good time to contact your Senator.

I must say that the swearing in of Alito and the hasty removal of O'Connor brought tears to my eye. Legislative log jams aside, the placement of Roberts and Alito on the court essentially completes a neo-con coup of the US government. The State of the Union speech was nothing to wow as far as I am concerned. It held the double-speak we are well used to - advance education while offering a $12.7 billion cut to student loans brought a hiss, but the bigger one was:"America is addicted to oil..."
