This is a fascinating story so behold.

Sultan Fateh Ali Tipu, also known as the Tiger of Mysore, was the ruler of the Kingdom of Mysore in India. His full name was Sultan Fateh Ali Khan Shahab or Tipu Saheb Tipu Sultan. He was not just a ruler but also a scholar, a soldier, and a poet. He was a devout Muslim but the majority of his subjects were Hindus. At the request of the French, he built a church, the first in Mysore. The French also trained his army. He helped his father Haider Ali defeat the British in the Second Mysore War. However, he was defeated in the Third and the Fourth Anglo-Mysore Wars by the combined forces of the British East India Company and the Nizam of Hyderabad, another Muslim ruler. Tipu Sultan died fighting in the defense of his capital Srirangapattana, on 4 May 1799.

Welcome Back!

The site is now running though I imagine there will be a few tweaks ahead. The major change for visitors will be a sign in for commenting.

The "Sign In" is available either at the top of the inner right column, or when you choose to comment. There are a two different sign in options. You may either select from a number of services you may already have accounts for (i.e. google, yahoo, open id, etc), or you may register for this site. I have provided the directions below, though you can likely figure it out on your own.

1. Select Sign In and a sign in screen will display.
- If you want to use one of your existing profiles, select it and submit.
- If you want to register for Uncommon Thought, then continue.

2. In the lower right hand corner of the Sign In frame is an option to register. Select it, and a registration screen displays.

3. Complete the registration form, and submit. A confirmation email will be sent to you.

4. Respond to the email and you are "registered" and signed in to comment.

After you have registered, you can just do the standard sign in to comment.

Look forward to hearing from you!

Hi All,

I want to forewarn you that there may be some disruptions on the site. I am taking the plunge and upgrading the site's software. This will be a multi-step process. The upgrade is necessary for security (damn the spammers and hackers) and to add capabilities not available with the current version of the software.

The upgrade has required a redesign of all of the site templates - a major task for this site, and one prone to a problem or two.

Given the complexity of this particular upgrade, please email me with any problems that you run into - or things you like or dislike.

Thank you for your continued patronage of Uncommon Thought, and for your patience while it undergoes reconstruction.

Urgent Notice to Readers

Dear Readers and Community,

I have been notified by my host provider that the experienced a hacking even on 7/9/2009 which hit a number of servers - including the one my site is hosted on. This is the message from my provider:

WARNING: During a short period of time during the attack, your site may have been redirected to a malware page promoting a "Web Accelerator" program. This file contains a virus identified as "Backdoor.Win32.VanBot!IK." Though the exposure time was very short, (less than 30 minutes) there is a possibility that users may have downloaded it. I would suggest informing your users of this and recommend that they run a virus scan and take measures to ensure their system is clean if they happened to download it.

While I do not believe that my site was hit by this, it is a good idea to run a scan of your computer.

By Rowan

Hi All,

I am just touching base to give an update. The procedure went as smoothly as might have been hoped. The recovery has not gone quite as well as we might have hoped. The procedure has flared up the trigeminal neuralgia which makes sorting out some of the symptoms problematic. I still have pain and swelling from where the halo was mounted, and some ongoing drainage from one site. I am having decreased hearing in the left ear and some equilibrium issues. Nausea - in part likely due to the radiation and in part the equilibrium. Finally got some compazine for that so I can at least briefly get on the PC to send off some notes and check my email. There are pain issues, but I am managing them most of the time. Still fatigued as well.

I had a somewhat humorous / some what nerve wracking spell of "double hearing" - my left ear was "hearing" about 1/2 second behind the right. That has partially cleared - or the gap has gotten much closer to in-synch. Let me tell you - that was truly bizarre.

I had hoped to be back to relatively normal by today, but it looks like it may take a bit longer than that. It is hard to say what the longer term results will be. The increasing equilibrium problem is somewhat concerning, but may straighten out (no pun intended) with some time.Right now I am essentially doing nothing - kind of an enforced rest I guess. I can only read about 5 minutes at a time, same for TV. Bit boring.

I want to thank you for the supportive and encouraging notes you have sent - I have received them and warmed by them. It is my firm hope to be able to return to my contribution to the broader effort in the near future.

My gratitude and best wishes to you all.

There are a variety of ways to catch the events of the Beijing Olympics online and and Wired has a big list of access mechanisms.Below are just a few:

Live Streams and On-Demand Highlights

NBC Olympics. Media giant NBC has exclusive rights to broadcast the Olympics in the United States, and will serve up four live streams and 3,000 hours of on-demand video online.

TV Tonic. NBC paired with Wavexpress to offer event highlights on demand via a download service similar to iTunes. For Windows Vista users only.

YouTube. Starting Wednesday, Google will provide approximately three hours of content each day from the Olympics Broadcasting Service on a channel dedicated to the games. The content will include highlight reels and daily wrap-ups, but no live coverage. The footage will be available in 77 territories, including South Korea, India and Nigeria, that aren't officially covered by Olympic sponsors, according to an International Olympic Committee press release.

CCTVOlympics.com. CCTV will be supplying more than 5,000 hours of Olympic Games coverage for mainland China and Macau.

I received an email from a Social Psychology student (Matthew Schottland) at NY University. He is part of a research team investigating how people determine who they are voting for. They have an online survey at http://www.psychsurveys.org/brietruesdell/2008primaries. I took the survey and it took me approximately 10 minutes to do. The funding for the research is from the National Science Foundation, and there is no political or corporate money involved.

After completing the survey, they provide a link explaining what they are doing. They do not share that information up front because it could bias response.

They would appreciate your help.

I offer my heartfelt congratulations to Al Gore for receiving the Nobel Prize. I think that it was spot on to say that he has been the single most visible person on bringing this issue to global attention and action. (Thanks to the hard work of the thousands who have been involved in the IPCC studies who share the award with AL Gore.)

There are many who want Al Gore to jump into the 2008 presidential race. Some of you may feel that way. While I would certainly support him and think he would make an excellent president, I think he may be more effective where he is doing what he is doing. What are your thoughts? Would you like to see Gore enter the current race? What would you hope he accomplish?

Fed Up With Cowardice and Duplicity

I am fed up and more than ticked off by most of the Congress and by the Democratic Presidential candidates. Remember the expansion of the Bush's illegal wiretapping? Remember the temporary expansion of the FISA extension than Representative Harman was passed based on hyped security threats? WHY are the Democrats passing these attacks on civil liberties and Constitutional protections?

In Case of Emergency A Good Idea

By Rowan Wolf

While the ICE Campaign [In Case of Emergency] started in 2004 with an idea by Bob Brotchie of the East Anglian Ambulance service, it was picked up by Vodaphone in 2005 (Urban Legends), it is an excellent idea. In essence, for those with mobile phones it entails making an entry (ICE) for those who should be contacted in case of emergency (ICE1, ICE2, etc). Some newer cell phones allow one to create "groups" for your phone numbers. You could make an ICE group and list those you want contacted. Such a designation would allow emergency service personnel to contact someone quickly if you were unable to provide that information.

Thanks Bill for sending this along.

Now that seems like a major impact that isn't being talked about.

Articles of Note

I direct your attention to an excellent article by Carolyn Baker "Unprepared, Uncompensated, and Clueless: The Prophets Have Become Historians." She discusses, quite eloquently and personally, the environmental and systems collapse we are now experiencing.

In a totally different vein, if you are looking for an intensive analysis of capitalism, I encourage you to sit down with the hot drink of your choice and read "Outting the L-word Part II: Nature, Power and Hierarchy" by Andrew S. Taylor. This is truly an exceptional article, and well worth the time to read. Below is a sample:

But let us blink away the pixie-dust for a moment, and consider an alternate possibility: that capitalism, even in its most laissez-faire and "de-regulated" form, is every bit as much "artificial" as Stalinist communism. I am not making an argument about moral equivalence here, nor am I using the term "artificial" in some pejorative sense. I mean, quite literally, that both economic systems are invented, planned, regulated, and can only function by means of an imposed consensus, i.e., by force. Neither represents an integration of the "natural order" into the lives of humans, though the idea that capitalism does is extremely powerful. This explains why, in America, we are loath to challenge it directly. (If it seems that, on this last point, I am smearing the mainstream with a rightward brush, consider Clinton's widespread popularity with the mainstream Left not in spite of, but rather because of an economic policy more rightward than that of any other post-war president).

I am not a big celebrator of holidays - any of them including birthdays. The reluctance is likely due to being in foster care as a child. However, I do realize that they are important for many people.

This is a time for families and friends. A time for the turning from the longest darkness of the year to the growing light and promise of spring. For many, it is a time of reflection and of remembering. It is a time of nodding to the past and winking at the future.

I wish all of you health and good friends and the courage of your convictions as we move with the Earth into increasing light. Beneath the mud and the ice; embraced within the heart of the branch; lies the will towards life. May it be so with you.

The Year Behind - The Year Ahead

Well, somehow we made it through 2005. It was a year of continued degradation of the planet and of freedom in so many ways. It was also a time of changing momentum for the Bush cabal. The ongoing efforts of millions of people - in the U.S. and elsewhere - helped bring a lies to light. There has been an awakening to the complex issues that threaten us from corporate hegemony, to lies and manipulation of the powerful; from the erosion of liberty to escalating climate problems; from peak oil to an awareness of shared humanity. So it has been a year of very bad news and events, but also a year of a growing number of people actively becoming informed and participating in positive change. I believe that 2006 will be even more challenging that 2005.

She published her early works under the pen name "Andrew North" because when she was first trying to get her work published in the 1930's, women authors had difficulty being published - particularly in the realm of science fiction. Andre Norton was formative in my life in so many ways.

In reading today's Christian Science Monitor, an article introduced an news site Watching America. This site provides English translations of international reports of news about the U.S. It looks like a valuable resource and I have added it to the "quick links."

Mathew Maavak has an interesting article by Barry Chamish on new crackdowns and activities inside Israel which you may find worth reading.

If you want to get frustrated, then read Data Shows Faster-Rising Death Toll Among Iraqi Civilians. They are keep track of civilian death tolls from suicide attacks and bombs, but the neither the U.S. military or the Iraqi government are releasing information on civilians killed through their actions.

Mind Mapping

I have been a devotee of "mind mapping" for years. I am not a linear thinker and the discovery of mind mapping helped me dramatically in organizing and exploring concepts, ideas and information. I first "discovered" the concept in a book by Gabriele Rico called Writing The Natural Way. I was laid up after a knee surgery and read the book. I immediately saw that it fit exceptionally well with the way that I think and see connections.

I have been looking for a long time to find a plugin that would find articles related to those I publish at this site. My goal was to provide you with a quick way to link out to other sites with posts on the same (or similar) topics. As I announced earlier this week, I found that at Waypath. This post is to pass on some kudos and some information.

New Feature At Uncommon Thought

I have introduced a new feature for those of you who are interested in seeing what others are writing about what you read here. Waypath has a plugin that searches the "blogosphere" and returns matches to the articles it is linked to. These matches will appear on the full page view of each article where matches are found. If there is nothing there, it means that either no one else has written about it, or that Waypath's interpretation of the topic did not find any matches. (You can see what it looks like on this article.)

I hope that this new feature will help extend the dialogue and social network, and hopefully offer you new discoveries.

Beetles Named After Bush, Cheney And Rumsfeld

This is just too choice to not spread around. While many want a star named after them, the highest profile figures of the current administration have the honor of beetles named after them. Two politically conservative entomologists (Quentin Wheeler and Kelly Miller) have named three newly discovered mould-eating beetles after Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld. As the scientists note: "We are two of the only politically conservative scientists around, and we decided to stick our necks out."

Agathidium bushi is found in North Carolina,Virginia and Ohio; Agathidium cheneyi and Agathidium rumsfeldi are both found in Mexico.

Just want to share some interesting tidbits in my recent news scans.

The U.S. has obviously been in Iraq too long as we take up practices we have condemned. Kidnapping and hostage taking has been so effective for a variety of groups and entrepreneurs that now the US is being accused of seizing Iraqi women to force fugitive relatives to give up.

Well, I have had one of those days. Ran like crazy all day long, got home and my ISP (and some of yours) Comcast was DOA. It just came back up and now I am too tired to think, much less post anything meaningful. Hopefully tomorrow will be a better day - for me, for you, and for the world. If nothing else the Pope (may he rest in peace) will be buried. I just can't imagine millions of people viewing my dead body, and find the thought vaguely horrifying. But then I am an introvert's introvert (believe it or not).

It seems that "reality TV" is all the rage now. Each "season" new ones are rolled out to be gobbled up by the eager masses. I have been scratching my head over this as I find them largely disgusting and not at all entertaining. One analyses I heard was that there were so many of them because they are so cheap to produce. I would imagine that having to fill a 24 hour, hundreds of channels television maw also has something to do with it. However, people do seem to be watching them - at least in the U.S.

Hi Folks, I should have posted something earlier, and several of you have contacted me because you are not receiving notifications of new posts to UTJ. I hoped the problem would be resolved quickly, so I did not post a warning. The last software update I did was to control spam, and the update interferes with the notification system. Supposedly Movable Type is working on this, but I don't know when they will get the issue resolved. Until then, the notification system does not work. I really hate spammers. Why don't they go spam the government or something.

I apologize for not posting something about the problem. Sorry!!!

Well, 2004 could have gone much better for the world, and 2005 is off to a running bad start. I generally don't do New Year's resolutions, but feel the need to affirm that I commit myself to continuing the struggle for sanity, peace, and justice. I also commit to keeping UTJ going for another year. We live in challenging times on every level of existence it seems. We re-learn every day just how small the world we share is. Just when it seems that my heart cannot be moved any more deeply, it is. So I brace myself for continuing struggles, and attempt to keep my heart open. May we all deal gently with each other in the coming year. I wish you all strength, hope, and the support of friends and strangers. May you practice, and be the recipient of, rnadom acts of kindness.

Knowing you are all realists as well as dreamers, keep your dreams alive - even in the face of reality!

Hi Folks,
There is a new feature that is available to you. You can now subscribe to receive notifications of comments on articles or discussions you are interested in. When you go to either the full page entry, or to leave a comment, you will see the notification form there. You can subscribe and not leave a comment or leave a comment as you choose.

The notifications are for that article only. They do not subscribe you either to receive general notifications, or notifications of all comments posted.

This option would be useful if you are participating in the discussion, or just interested in the discussion, on a particular article.

I was also able to retain the spell check feature for comments.

Once again, please let me know if there are any problems.

Thank you for your patience.

I am double checking my comment notifications and will add any comments I captured that did not show up.

My current host provider has had some catastrophic server failures and is limping along and going out of business. That means that I must find a new "home" for Uncommon Thought, get that set up, and move the site. This could be somewhat of a labor intensive proposition, but will hopefully be transparent for you. What it does mean is that time I would spend tracking information down and posting that may be somewhat constrained for a while. At this point I am trying to find a reliable host that meets the requirements of UTJ for a reasonable price.

Hopefully, this will go quickly and smoothly and things will get back to "normal." I apologize in advance for any degradation in the quality of content.

Uncommon Thought is experiencing an increase in visits from NIPR.mil (See below for info about NIPR). Thus far today, they have visited the site at 10:26 am, 12:30pm, and 2:57pm. They also dropped by two times yesterday. I suspect this is because something "sensitive" or "close to the mark" was posted in the last couple of days. There are only three posts that seem likely to have prompted such increased interest War Profits - In Brief or 380 Tons of Missing High Grade Explosives? or Missiles and Shell Casings Are Not The Only Use For Depleted Uranium. My guess is it is the explosives, but I could be wrong. My guess is my speculation that the materials were removed for sale, or that a "contractor" was supposed to be guarding them hit a nerve. Working from the latter guess, I have been trying to track down contract information. Thus far, I haven't found anything.

New Species of Humans Discovered - This is Not A Hoax

Archeologists in Indonesia have discovered a new species of humans (now extinct). Homo floresiensis was about 3 feet tall at adulthood, was a tool maker, and could have still been present as recently as 6, 000 years ago. This totally different branch of humanity is challenging iedeas of evolution and will also challenge deep seated philosphical and religious beliefs about the "uniqueness" of man. The finding is written up in the most recent edition of Nature (October 28, 2004), but I don't have a subscription to that journal (sorry). However, you can read about the discovery at the BBC site - 'Hobbit' joins human family tree; the Independent - The 3ft-tall 'hobbit' that rewrites the history of mankind; ABC - Interview transcript.

New Use for "Gene Therapy"?

I just have to pass this one on, Turning Slackers Into Workaholics. Researchers at NIMH are trying a new genetic therapy that blocks the "D2" gene that controls dopamine levels in the brain. In tests on monkeys, researchers found that the technique made them worker harder and more efficiently. Of course, there is no proof that this gene tampering would effect humans in the same way, but given the similarities between simians and humans it seems likely. Another step closer to drone world? Maybe.

Ok, I have implemented a very basic spell checker for comments. When you click on Preview/Spell, misspelled words are in red with suggestions below for chnages. You then have to type the change in. There may be words that are spelled correctly that are shown as being incorrect. I still like the on demand spell checker that I put out earlier today (Online spell checker - Spell Magic).

Let me know if this helps.

In my hunt for a way to add a spell checker for comments on Uncommon Thought (unsuccessful so far) I did find a cool tool that works in any windows application (including comments on line). The package is called Spell Magic and is a shareware package. That means you can try it and if you like it you can purchase it ($24.95). You can download the package at Tucows - Spell Magic 5.1.6. It includes leagl & medical dictionaires and 10 languages English (United States) * Danish * Dutch (Netherlands) * French (France) * German (Germany) * Italian (Italy) * Portuguese (Brazil) * Portuguese (Portugal) * Spanish (International Sort) * Swedish.

When you install it, it loads to your computer. To access it from within an application, you press the windows key + F3).

I will continue my efforts to include spell checking on Uncommon Thought Comments. For fellow bloggers, it also works inside MT entries. If anyone knows of a freeware package that would help folks, please add it to the comments.

Today is a historic day for Uncommon Thought Journal. The site officially went over 10,000 hits.

I want to thank all of you for your support, loyalty, and sharing with your friends. Thanks also goes to the web log community that has been kind enough to place a link to Uncommon Thought on their sites, and include UTJ articles and discussions on their own sites (please see the Blog Community in the left margin).

Last year I thought that UTJ was dead when it was taken down by the powers that be. I struggled through, and with your patience and support, and the efforts of the Blog Community Members, we resurrected and moved on. UTJ was off the web for three weeks (an eternity on the web), and then it was on a temporary backup site. You came back. You went through the inconvenient process of the backup site and then a return to the main site. You not only came back, you brought friends with you!

I am honored and humbled that you find Uncommon Thought of worth and of note. I will continue to attempt to produce work, and present the notable works of others, in an effort to fulfill your expectations. You are a knowledgeable and discriminating group!

So thank you for your support and your active participation in important community dialog!

With warmth and sincerity,

Wanted to point folks to a new an excellent resource.

Paul O'Neill and Ron Suskind's book - "The Price of Loyalty: George W. Bush, the White House, and the Education of Paul O'Neill" - has made available the government documents cited in the book. As noted at the site:

An Experiment in Transparency

These documents are drawn from a collection of 19,000 files of Paul H. O'Neill, the U.S. Treasury Secretary for the first two years of the Presidency of George W. Bush. Like all Treasury Secretaries, O'Neill was the top domestic appointment of the President and also a principal of the National Security Council. The files, which range from memoranda to the President to handwritten notes to "sensitive" internal reports, cover a sweeping array of foreign and domestic issues. They also display the attending political and personal matters that often determine policy. They were collected as part of a Treasury Department archiving process in which every item that crossed O'Neill's desk, from every department in government, was copied into a TIF, or image, file. Documents cited in the "The Price of Loyalty" are presented with explanations of context and little comment. They speak, as does all irrefutable evidence, for themselves. More files of compelling public interest will be released in the coming days and weeks.

This appears to be an excellent resource for those looking for source information about the Administration and its policies - including the emphasis on Iraq.

Nick Ogilvie

1937-2004

After a long battle with cancer, chemo, open heart surgery, and more cancer, Nick Ogilvie, leader of the PH Phactor Jug Band, a San Francisco icon and Portland musical pioneer, died at 11:20pm February 21, 2004. He is survived by his wife of 34 years Tina, son Ian, and daughters Melissa Sutphin and Mohee McBride, plus a very large and diverse extended family of musicians and friends. Nick was born in Medford, Oregon December 9th, 1937 and grew up in Portland.

Nick Ogilvie, singer, songwriter, guitar-, saxophone-, harmonica-, and piano-player performed in the 60's in San Francisco and Portland, later to make Portland his permanent home, after a 7-year stay in Taos, New Mexico. In Taos, his band The Oriental Blue Streaks performed at various venues including the Old Martinez Hall and the Thunderbird in Placitas. From jams to jug band music to jazz, blues and other roots music, Nick Ogilvie was a giant of the West Coast scene, and played at the Avalon Ballroom, Fillmore West, Winterland, and The Matrix. Nick played on the same bill with numerous major acts, including: Jefferson Airplane in Portland's Coliseum; with the Grateful Dead & Quicksilver Messenger Service at the Crystal Ballroom; the Doors; the Byrds; Jan & Dean; Lightning Hopkins, etc .....

Nick Ogilvie was recently profiled in the movie "The Life & Times of the Red Dog Saloon" by Mary Works, a music history film narrated by Howard Hesseman, about the bands that played at the Red Dog Saloon in Virginia City, Nevada, the first rock n'roll club with live music, lightshows, dancing and hand drawn posters--a first in the modern era, the conception of the San Francisco Family Dog dance concerts. Nick performed in the 1969 movie Paint Your Wagon with Lee Marvin, Jean Seburg and Clint Eastwood that included 200 Hippie "extras" living in the Eagle Cap Wilderness of Northeastern Oregon.

The movie "The Life & Times of the Red Dog Saloon" will be shown at the Mission Theater on Thursday March 18 as a tribute to Nick.

A memorial tribute to Nick Ogilvie will be presented at the Crystal Ballroom on Sunday afternoon, March 21, 2004 from 2:00pm to 8:00pm. The event will be free to the public, with live music, archive video, and poster showing.

An appeal

By Rowan Wolf

Kevin over at The American Street has posted a special appeal for Jim Capozolla at Rittenhouse Review. Jim is an activist and a blogger. He has also fallen on hard times. If you can help out, please do so.

Here is the text of Kevin's post because I can't say it any better Let's pull together for one of the good guys:

I'm an anti-social Deaniac, in that I was never particularly engaged in the social atmosphere of its main blog or the hundreds of spawning Howardlings that occurred after his heroic swim upriver.

However, I have experienced the social life that comes from the experience of being homeless. That's a vulnerable feeling and moreso, a very, very lonely feeling. Unlike some homeless, I did have family I could cross the country to or occasionally beg from, and friends, as well. But there is a very real sense of 'not wanting to be a burden' that compels most people not to go there unless they're too sick to otherwise survive.

For some time, I've observed a few fellow bloggers struggling through the throes of unemployment. Some have teetered close to that edge with readers coming to their aid. Now, one of the best writers and progressive activists appears to be poised on that edge. He's been so active in the Dem party that he was even considering a Senate run against the extremist conservative Rick Santorum a few months back.

I hope every reader today can find $5-$20 to send his way. And if you are a Deaniac in the most social sense, would you please get the word out to the bigger Dean blogs and see if we can keep Jim Capozzola of The Rittenhouse Review afloat for a few months, to spare him that fate?

It is not just in politicians that we define our world, but in our investment to our own hearts. Please contribute, and pass on the word to others.

Here is the link to Jim's explanation of his situation - Life on the Edge

DHS cyber security project

There are a lot of internet viruses out there, and new ones being developed all the time. It is important to have good anti-virus protection and your firewall enabled on your computer. The Department of Homeland Security is advertising their new site to keep internet users informed about these "attacks" and to provide information about protecting your computer from them - U.S. Department of Homeland Security Improves America's Cyber Security Preparedness--Unveils National Cyber Alert System (DHS site). I will not be registering at the Homeland Security site. They are actively engaged in establishing extensive databases and data mining operations. Certainly they wouldn't use the information on those who register in any of these, but my faith was shaken when the Census Bureau turned over census files to NASA for profiling data mining (See This breach of privacy must be addressed Uncommon Thought 1/20/04).

So if you want to check out the DHS service, and/or sign up, go to the DHS link above.
