Five years of this war, and no end in sight.

I received an email from a friend in Iraq. She was asking me to sign a petition and distribute it as widely as possible. Young Iraqi refugee girls were being forced into prostitution in Syria. She was working to draw attention to their situation and hoped for a global response of help for them.

"There was a consensus that last year was not productive...Our expectations were dashed," so John Isaacs was quoted as saying at a meeting of anti-war groups last week. One group alone has been said to have "spent $12 million last year" in actions opposing the war.

"Our expectations were dashed." Mine were not.

The doors have opened on another holiday season. Utility workers have spent hours hoisting holiday decorations to the tops of buildings and attaching lights to all the telephone poles in town. It won't be long before the entrance displays of massive armored fighting vehicles that represent the muscle of the Rock of the Marne at Fort Stewart, Georgia are covered with lights.

I received an email last week. Almost two pages long and with only enough sentence breaks to count on one hand, it was coming from a place I knew all too well and recognized instantly - the heart of a military wife who wanted to lose control but knew she was all that stood between her husband and heartbreak.

The Veterans For Peace caravan came through Hinesville, Georgia last week. It was the first time since the start of the war that a group from the Peace movement had held any actions in this military town, home of the Third Infantry Division, the division to invade Iraq.

I remember the first time I visited the Viet Nam memorial in Washington, DC. I wasn't very old and neither was the wall. I was not sure I understood why there had been a war; even to this day I am not sure I understand that. I didn't understand the feelings I had inside when I stood at the entrance to the wall. My father took my hand and told me I was not to say a word as we walked the long walk through the memorial. I didn't know why but I knew I was walking on sacred ground, and I felt grateful that I was able to visit such a place

He was old school.

Wearing nothing but a simple button-down shirt and blue jeans he walked to the back of the café and sat at a chair in the corner. He ordered a home-style meal and ate quietly, watching the patrons who passed through the doorways of the family-run eatery, subtle nods the only form of recognition needed. He noticed it all and said nothing.

On July 27, 2005, in a military court martial held at Ft. Stewart, Georgia, Sgt. Kevin Benderman was convicted of Missing Movement for allegedly refusing to board a plane for a second deployment to Iraq.

Sgt. Benderman had filed an application for Conscientious Objector status in 2004. This application was ignored, mishandled, and disrespected by every level of command in an effort to punish this 10-year veteran for exercising his rights and making a choice of conscience against the wishes of his command. Sgt. Benderman did not fit the military mold of a Conscientious Objector - he did not cite religious verses, he could not recount his moment of epiphany - but Sgt. Benderman did listen to his conscience.

One year ago my husband was sentenced to 15 months in prison for his refusal to participate in war.

He is a combat veteran. He is no coward.

He saw the cost of war - the experiences it brought taught us both the value of peace.

In a short time, my husband will be home. There are still legal issues that we have to face - they seem almost insignificant. We are alive. We have struggled against many obstacles in an effort to reach the peace we have asked for - we have survived.

We have learned. Peace is simple.

Driving on a community road not far from here, I passed a new construction site. The structure will be imposing upon completion, but even without seeing the finished product, its representation is enough to inspire questions. The sign posted announces the future site of a "Chapel Complex" and the steel frame already erected conjures up the image of a cathedral, one with a three story grand entrance, and a massive sanctuary. In the end, it may not be so grand, but still the questions represent a conflict that calls out for resolution. This chapel complex is located within the garrison of Ft. Stewart, Georgia, one block away from the stretch of motor pools just now receiving their first shipments of armored vehicles returning from their year in Iraq.

When a soldier no longer wants to fight, when his conscience tells him that he can no longer believe in the mission and commanders order that soldier back to combat against his will, there is something wrong. There is something very wrong when commanders send that soldier to jail simply because they cannot control what he believes, and what he believes scares them.

Back in 1620, Pilgrims came to this country to get away from the repression they felt by those in England who would not allow them to practice their religion freely. No one from another country went to rescue them. No one brought guns to their land and destroyed their king, or fought their battles for them. With sweat, blood, fear for the unknown and yet driven by a powerful will to live by the basic human rights all people possess, these pilgrims made a choice. Repressed, with none of the modern weapons of warfare we blatantly wield today, knowing they could not live with this treatment, they freely chose to liberate themselves. The Pilgrims understood the meaning of freedom. It was not free - they earned it - they did not rely on others, they did not expect others to do the work for them.

Across the country men and women have been jailed, not for committing a crime, but rather for making a conscious choice to live by their moral principles adhering to the laws of a higher authority. They are jailed because those who believe themselves to be in positions of authority are frightened by the truth of their stand and the strength of their convictions.

Terrorism is the use of fear tactics to coerce others to bend to your will or way of thinking. Terrorists employ threats as a means of controlling the actions of others.

The root of terrorist actions lies in simple aggressive behaviors, often referred to as disciplinary actions, designed to scare a person enough to make them "toe the line" and follow directions even when the directions lead to a violation of their own ethical principles.

Have you forgotten? We are people.

Have you forgotten? There are feelings inside.

Have you forgotten?

We are fighting for our lives. We are fighting for the right to live in peace, as we choose. We are fighting to live by what we believe, in the hope that others will be allowed the same opportunity, even as they choose to live differently than what we have chosen.

Christmas comes but once a year. Why?

Maybe it is a reminder.

Churches are full on Christmas Eve. So many pay homage - listening to the story of Christmas. Year after year, children memorize the Christmas story, learn to point in the direction of the Star of Bethlehem, and surround a cradle full of hay to sing "Away in a Manger," with hands folded sweetly to their chins.

A VietNam Veteran: His Name Was Earl

His name was Earl. He spent his days in a wheel chair, hand propelled, sitting along the sidewalks of the seawall in a Victorian city along the coast. He kept all of his possessions in a shopping cart, while his valuables hung from the handles of his chair. I met him one night while walking on the beach. I walked past a hollowed out part of the rocky seawall, and something moved. It was Earl, and a blanket. After going across the street and returning with cups of coffee, I sat and listened while Earl talked. He was a Viet Nam veteran. He'd done three tours in Viet Nam; he was an honorable man, torn by his experiences and yet sure of himself and what he believed.

The Regional Corrections Facility at Ft. Lewis, Washington is vintage World War II. The windows are cracked and can't be closed. It's below freezing on most nights now.

I could go on - but what good will it do in this country of warmongers, idealistic pacifists, and evangelicals? Nothing like love for a cause - any cause - as long as it's impersonal enough that everyone can remain detached, can share their emotions through the war cries and protest chants, staring out into a field of people whose gazes are just as vacant as the featured speaker of the day.

What are you afraid of? That without your office you are nothing? That it is your elected office that makes you who you are, and if you lose it, you will be nothing more than a common citizen again? Perhaps that is what has to happen, for you to realize that even in office, you are a common citizen. You are failing us - time to go back to the beginning and start again.

War - Guns, tanks, chemical weapons, killing, devastation, inhumanity.

Why do we go to war? Why does anyone pursue another to the point of war?

Forget who instigated it. At war - both sides kill. Soldiers are told their side is right - they are given guns and ordered to kill as many on the other side as possible because the "other side" is wrong.

How do you trust a country that cannot keep its word?

How do you trust a country that allows decisions to be made by leaders not elected for their integrity, but because their beliefs were accepted by "the party" that chose them to be their candidate, and "the party" had enough money to finance the campaign?

How do you trust a country that says it supports you for standing for what it believes in, and then turns its back on you unless you sing your own praises, and publicize your accomplishments, and tell your supporters how wonderful they are for the warm feelings they give you?

Wake up, America... stop believing in the illusion

Americans blindly move through the fog, running from themselves, believing in saviors who will pull them above the fray just before they go over the edge. We don't face anything head-on. When the going gets tough, Americans go drinking. We have Prozac, Zyprexa, Ambien, Xanex - and a world of chemicals to thicken the fog. There's the building on the hill where we gather to pray for forgiveness from our sins and wait for the man to come and save us. We believe that man died so long ago to forgive our sins. NO, he did not. He died because of them. The story became one of glorification to hide our own weaknesses and justify our avoidance of the truth.

Kevin Benderman put his principles on the line and dared to trust that his rights would be respected as the constitution he fought to defend demands.

The Incompetent Conspiracy

As we watch the events of our lives unfold millions of people breathe the word “conspiracy” as if everyone is out to get them. Why?

The only conspiracy is the conspiracy of incompetence.

It begins by being afraid - very, very afraid. Of what - the men with guns? That happens later, much later. This fear is far more simplistic, and it truly threatens your way of life.

It's been two and a half years. There are almost 2000 soldiers deaths officially accounted for. How many family members does that come to? Is there a number?

The war has cost billions. Where did it all go? Is there an accurate number?

There are thousands of Iraqi causalities. Does anyone know their names? Has anyone counted?

In the wars before, history tells of the great loss of life - the monetary cost. Are there numbers we can trust?

Hundreds of thousands of protestors have marched in a thousand different cities. Are we sure of the count? Should we count again?

The Roller Coaster Ride

In an amusement park that I used to take our kids to, there was a roller coaster ride called the "Corkscrew." It turned, and twisted and even reversed itself and went backwards after the first full cycle of track was completed. We would stand in line for an hour just to have a 3 minute ride, only to get back in the hour long line and do it again. We paid for this, and at the end of the day, I wondered why as we left the park with heads spinning and knees trying to direct our legs straight ahead. I finally decided I didn't need that any more. It was easier just to stay away and stay focused than it was to pay $65.00 a piece for a day that only made me feel very confused.

For Cindy

From Sgt. Kevin Benderman - Prisoner of Conscience for objecting to war

"I have come to the conclusion that the Creator does not want us to fight wars or to leave our brothers to die in hunger or disease. We have been given the things we need to provide all men on the planet with what they need to get by in this world. Why should I not help another human being that needs what I can help them with? I have ignored that for far too long. I have turned my head when the homeless person asks for a little help. I have taken advantage of others when I should have been offering a hand up. I have done things in my life that I am not proud of. I have not lived a perfect life so I will not tell anyone else how to live theirs. I have learned that I have done things that are not to the benefit of mankind, and to continue in that vein would be detrimental to my growth as a human being.

MEMORANDUM TO: George W. Bush - President, United States of America
Donald Rumsfeld - Secretary of Defense, United States of America

RE: Sgt. Kevin Benderman

Dear Sirs:

As I am certain you are all aware, my husband, Sgt. Kevin Benderman, was sentenced to 15 months confinement, loss of rank, forfeiture of pay and a dishonorable discharge last week, the charge being "Missing Movement" or failure to get on a plane. In actuality, the charge was "filing a Conscientious Objector packet against the recommendation of his commander, who had no intention of allowing my husband to follow his conscience, and therefore serving notice to the rest of our military that they should not follow suit." I need to assure you that I do not make this statement out of anger, but rather by simply pointing to the facts. Not only did my husband's commander address this in a public comment to the media, the prosecutor used this in his closing statements, and the military representative was adamant about this in his public comments to the media immediately following my husband's court martial.

In Japan, on August 6, 1945, an atomic bomb created in America was dropped over the Japanese city of Hiroshima. A small child of 2, Sadako Sasaki, and her family lived on the outskrts of Hiroshima at the time, none of them were hurt in that instant but the seed of hurt had been planted. In 1955, 10 years after the atomic bomb, Sadako had developed leukemia. People soon were calling this the A-bomb sickness because so many other children just like Sadako also contracted the disease.

"Actually, it's quite fun to fight them ... it's a hell of a hoot." "It's fun to shoot some people."

As the wife of a soldier who has sworn to "defend his country and its constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic," and as the mother of an 18 year old son who has recently had to register with Selective Service, I have thought about these comments to a great degree.
