Dear Friends,

[Caveat: It has taken a week for me to write this. Meaning? I am still very slow. While I truly appreciate hearing from you, please don't hold it against me if you do not get a rapid (or expansive) response.]

It has been a momentous time over the last six weeks.

From the despair of not knowing how I was going to get home from my visit to Stanford to undergoing a double lung transplant to working my way through recovery.

On June 20th I underwent a nine and a half hour surgery and received a new set of lungs to replace those destroyed by pulmonary hypertension.

Institutional Peer Pressure

JuviePrisonCO.jpgAll I can think about is where to start. I was thinking about the beginning but that might be a little too early in the life I speak of. I wish I had more life experience I could work with but maybe the experiences I can objectively speak of can help me and others around me have more understanding of some of life's core values and social norms that can be better understood. In society I have lived constantly adjusting my values and norms to fit those acceptable by society's standards. Sometimes situations arise in the free world that are very aggressive and I work with what good experiences I have to reflect on to avoid the negative group pressure and discover more productive ways of dealing with different situations throughout the course of life. Coming from a good upbringing I was like many others, very foolish in my teenage years. With my parents never teaching me anything about jail or prison I was schooled as soon as I showed up to McLaren "Juvenile jail" and unlike so many other people that came before me in what is referred to as the testing situation, a fight for ones safety, I stood against many by myself with those watching making wagers. In that instant when It was all over I knew that whatever I had done was the right way to act in this place I was sent to live receiving pats on the back from people I have never met and hugs while getting cuffed. Being forced into a living situation where violence is the first and only way to really get your point across did, in a way, corrupt my way of life for a while.

Consumer Alert: For Wamu Mortgage Holders

This is a heads up for those of you who may have a mortgage with Washington Mutual. Those mortgages are in the process of transition to Chase. I accidentally found this issue, and there was no warning from either Wamu or Chase. I discovered by checking my mortgage online that the payment date of my mortgage had been changed from the 6th of the month to the 1st of the month.

Since my mortgage is paid automatically from my account, this is a big deal. Since I get paid between the 1st and the 4th of the month depending on weekends and holidays, it is entirely possible that the automatic payment of my mortgage could overdraw my account. If this date change also effects people who mail in their payments, then if you are not paying attention, you could potentially be late on your payment.

ADDITIONALLY I have received warnings from my veterinarians concerning chicken products and kidney failure in pets. This is related to yet another melamine contamination issue from China.

*** FDA Warning: Chicken Jerky Treats ***
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) cautions consumers about a potential association between the development of illness in dogs and the consumption of chicken jerky products from China. Chicken treats labeled as "jerky, tenders, or strips" should be avoided. Since an estimated 99% of all chicken treats are exported from China, we urge extreme caution when selecting pet treats. Which treats are SAFE to feed our pets? We highly recommend and feed our OWN dogs IVD Natural Apple & Oat Treats, HILLS Prescription Diet Hypoallergenic Treats (for dogs with sensitivities), and Butler's Lean Treats made with skinless chicken breast.

Cheney Must Keep Records

The Bush administration takes a loss (for now) on it challenge of the Presidential Records Act. The administration was sued by Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) for trying to narrow the definition of what records Dick Cheney needs to reveal. The administration wanted to narrow the records to those from the Vice President's Office. However, a federal judge ruled that a broader range of records must be preserved. The suit arose out of Cheney's claim that the Vice President's office is a separate hinterland of government that is not part of either the executive or legislative branch of government.

For those of you who did not see Keith Obermann's interview with Scott McClellan delving into issues from his new book (What Happened: Inside the Bush White House and Washington's Culture of Deception), here is the link to the interview Interview. The interview is in approximately 15 minute chunks. The order of the full program is in reverse number order. The beginning is #5, second part is #4 etc. Below is the beginning of the interview:

Probably the most critical revelation comes at about nine minutes into #5 (the beginning of the interview) where McClellan retells Bush telling him that he authorized Scooter Libby to leak portions of the classified National Intelligence Estimate (NIE).

... and a reporter shouted out to the President "Is it true that you authorized the secret leaking (the NIE) of this previously classified information" (though the President does have the legal authority) walk onto Airforce 1 and the President asked "What was the reporter asking?" And I said "He asserted that you were the one who authorized Scooter Libby leaking this information." And he said "Yeah, I did." And it really took me back.

Pet food contamination - Update

By Rowan Wolf

The most recent information on the contamination of pet and animal food is coming from some research done by scientists at the University of Guelph in Ontario Canada. Their tests indicate that the combination of melamine and cyanuric acid, when combined with the acidic environment of the urinary tract create crystal found in the kidneys of some of the dead cats. This is a significant finding as neither of those compounds seem to be in significant enough amounts to cause the damage and death that has been seen.

The scientists report that there is other "stuff" that they have yet to identify in their studies.

The current list of recalled foods can be found at the FDA Recall List.

While it has not been added to the US list of problematic ingredients, there was an article today from South Africa of renal failure in dogs and cats due to melamine in corn gluten. While the food was processed in South Africa, the gluten - once again - came from suppliers in China. This would place on the danger list wheat, rice, and corn gluten and concentrated vegetable protein from any of these sources.

Pet Food Recall Expanded

Share/Save/Bookmark | Sphere: Related Content

Here we go again. The pet food recall has been expanded again. They have found the same contaminant (melamine) in rice gluten. The source of this contamination was also from China, but another manufacturer. Of significant concern is that China is resisting inspections, which may be an issue of national control, or may reflect a much larger issue with food production for export. To keep track of the recall, and see what foods and brands recalled check out the FDA Pet Food Recall site.

On the preventative side, you might look at local producers of pet food as a supplier, or switch to making you own pet food. I will investigate this and report back on options in the near future. If you know of any safe sources, or balanced pet food recipes, please feel free to either contact me or share them in the comments section.

Latest info from the FDA

There have been several changes in the pet food recall. The recall has been extended to some more varieties of both canned AND dry pet foods. While it looks to me like there is confusion still over what the exact problem is, veterinarians are now recommending to not feed any food (wet or dry) that has wheat gluten in it.

Meanwhile, the FDA has named Xuzhou Anying Biologic Technology Development Co. Ltd. from China as the source of the gluten, and has mandatory monitoring on any wheat gluten from China or the Netherlands.

Last night (in the U.S.) the UK initiated a critical alert at airports in response to a possible plot to blow up commercial airplanes in flight out of the UK. The focus is on the possibility of liquid explosives which has caused a restriction on virtually all carry-on liquids in both the UK and the US. Apparently, the UK informed Bush "earlier in the week" of the threat. It is not clear, but it seems the current response was set in motion by a possible attack on a flight out of Qatar. According to the Reuters' report, passengers and stewards stopped an Eritrean man trying to get into the cockpit of a Qatar Airlines plane. The plane returned safely to Amman, Jordan.

The Pentagon has released two video clips of the explosion at the Pentagon on 9/11/01. Here are the links to those videos: video 1, and video 2. I downloaded the videos and watched them frame by frame using Video Edit Magic. I must say that the only thing that is certain is that something exploded and started a large fire. In going through the videos frame by frame, it looks as if the video has been cut. However, this may not be the case as if the video was put together from still images then the time lag at the first appearance of the object onto the screen compared to the frames to the explosion is disproportionately long. I cannot determine what it was that hit the Pentagon. Watch it yourself and see if you can make an identification.

If you are nervous about downloading or viewing the files from the Pentagon site, you may download here.

Public Comment Period for this rule Closes December 12, 2005

Public comments are now being accepted by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on its newly proposed federal regulation regarding the testing of chemicals and pesticides on human subjects. On August 2, 2005, Congress had mandated the EPA create a rule that permanently bans chemical testing on pregnant women and children. But the EPA's newly proposed rule, misleadingly titled "Protections for Subjects in Human Research," puts industry profits ahead of children's welfare. The rule allows for government and industry scientists to treat children as human guinea pigs in chemical experiments in the following situations:

  1. Children who "cannot be reasonably consulted," such as those that are mentally handicapped or orphaned newborns may be tested on. With permission from the institution or guardian in charge of the individual, the child may be exposed to chemicals for the sake of research.
  2. Parental consent forms are not necessary for testing on children who have been neglected or abused.
  3. Chemical studies on any children outside of the U.S. are acceptable.

Yay! FINALLY, someone does something that makes sense about Avian Flu. China is going to vaccinate all of its poultry. Now that is no small task with roughly 5.2 billion birds to be vaccinated. This is the first action to stop a pandemic that has made any sense at all. Stop the virus at the birds. By protecting the poultry from bird flu, it should dramatically reduce the risks of transmission to humans (in its current form), thereby reducing the risks of it muting to a highly communicable human to human form. Thank you China for taking truly positive action.. Logistically, this will be a difficult undertaking, but then so is culling millions of birds each time there is an outbreak.

The abortion language would bar federal, state and local agencies from withholding taxpayer money from health care providers that refuse to provide or pay for abortions or refuse to offer abortion counseling or referrals. Current federal law, aimed at protecting Roman Catholic doctors, provides such "conscience protection'' to doctors who do not want to undergo abortion training. The new language would expand that protection to all health care providers, including hospitals, doctors, clinics and insurers.

Attack on Falluja Begins

Well, the attack on Falluja has begun. From the reports thus far there are lots of bombing and strafing runs, and US and Iraqi troops have entered the city. It is likely there will be a high casualty toll for both US and Iraqi troops as well as for civilians in the city. I don't know if the current action is necessary or not, but I do believe that this should never have happened. Let us hope that the insurgents surrender and the conflict is short-lived. There is no chance that Zarqawi will be captured as the military reports he most likely left Falluja weeks ago (heard that on the radio this morning).

The National Business Review has the 18 minute transcript of bin Laden's latest tape. If you want to compare transcripts, Al Jazeera has another full transcript. The NBR says that Al Jazeera edited the transcript and it leaves out parts. Namely:

Among the key lines omitted by al Jazeera was a general threat of on-going warfare: "We want to restore freedom to our Nation and just as you lay waste to our Nation, so shall we lay waste to yours."

Perhaps more significant were several long passages in which bin Laden rejoices in the economic costs of the war to America -- and identifies Iraq as a key aspect of al Qaeda's strategy to force the American economy into bankruptcy.

Well according to Zaman Online, Saddam is planning to Declare his Candidacy for the Iraqi Elections (thanks to Information Clearing House for this one). Given what has been going down in Iraq, a number of Iraqi's may feel a bit nostalgic about Hussein. It would be beyond ironic, if after the destruction of a nation and the deaths of tens of thousands that Iraq reelected Hussein.

For example, despite the Bush administration constantly reiterating they had no "torture" policy (I've already flogged that topic) today's headline reads Bush team 'knew of abuse' at Guantánamo. Well, for those with short memories, how about this one from 9/23/03 - "Did U.S. Forces Allow a Massacre of 3,000 Taliban Prisoners to Occur?" . Or how about this from 3/07/03 - Afghan Prisoners Beaten to Death at US Military Interrogation Base.

The tragedy of the hostage situation in Beslan, Russia at Middle School No. 1 continues its grisly unfolding. On Wednesday, an unknown number of armed people slipped into the school and took students, parents, and staff hostage. It was the first day of school. Early in the hostage situation, there was a release of some hostages. Then without warning everything blew up - literally. The captors had wired series of explosives around the gym where many of the hostages were being held. Then yesterday there was an exchange of fire between the captors and Russian forces followed by a series of explosions which collapsed the roof of the gym on the heads of the captives. This set off open battle between Russian Special Forces and the captors. The current count is 322 dead (151 of whom are children) and hundreds more injured.

Well after all the run around, a name has been released though it made hardly a ripple in the news. Yes, Scooter who is chief of staff for Vice President Cheney (8/25/04, Leonnig, Wa. Post). "Scooter" was an early favorite in the outing of Plame. The Securities and Exchange Commission gave the McLean-based company what is known as a Wells notice, informing the board of directors that the agency might file a civil complaint, seeking a permanent injunction and a fine, over the company's accounting errors. Freddie Mac has acknowledged that it misstated profits by $5 billion over three years, 2000 through 2002.

This is big news and effects U.S. taxpayers directly as Freddie Mac is a Government Sponsored Enterprise.

Let's get moral shall we? As you all know, Bush & Co, as well as the Republicans, think that the way to end poverty is by teaching celibacy. The BBC reports that the Bush Administration has given $700,000 to a project called "The Silver Ring Thing" a project for young people who vow to abstain from sexual activity. It has been such a success in the US (over 1 million have taken the pledge) that the group has moved on to Britain. In true reverse effect style, the article cites an American study:

"The depressing reality is that abstinence education actually increases teenage pregnancies. An American study showed that nine out of 10 young people who took a sexual abstinence pledge went on to break it, and because they were so unprepared and guilty they were far less likely to use contraception."

So much for that (specious) causative link between sexual activity and poverty.

CBS News has three video clips from tonight's news (6/12/04) that you should watch. They are available at CBS News Video. When you click on the video link for a story it will show the whole list. Sorry, I don't know how to link to a specfic clip.

The first is "Got Oil" and it is about the overstatement by oil companies - such as Shell - of the oil reserve. Apparently there may be a significant gap between the real reserve and what has been reported. This as tremendous impact on the peak oil issue, and may indicate that we are already past the peak (perhaps significantly).

Inactive Reserve ordered to report

Update 5/17/04 There is still no broader coverage, but I have found a bit more information which is included at the end of this article.

On the local news last night I heard that the I.R.R. (Inactive Reserve) are being mobilized, and are to make contact by Monday. I am having difficulty finding any real information about this. From the report last night, Inactive Reservists need to contact their commanders to get more information and indicate their assignment preferences. This call up effects about 120,000 Reservists in Oregon and Washington. Apparently Oregon and Washington are not the only states being recalled. The Tennessee Army National Guard is holding family mobilization meetings and are leaving for Camp Shelby (Miss.) on June 17th. In a press release from Army Public Affairs, "obiligated" IRR soldiers are being screened for possible assignments.

The commander interviewed last night was shocked by the mobilization, and that the order had only gone out on the web (which site was not noted). He said that Inactive Reservists would be getting letters - probably Monday. The only direct information I found was National Guard and Reserve Mobilized as of May 12, 2004 from the DoD link.

If you have any information, please let me know.
UPDATE - 1700 pacific time
Well still can't find anything in print, but the TV news says that the Portland Inactive Reserve should report to the National Guard Armory to put in their assignment preferences. Those who do not will be involunarily assigned.

Oregonians have a special place in their hearts for the killer whale Keiko. Keiko was the star of the "Free Willy" movies, and many took that to heart with an amazing attempt to return him to freedom. Keiko died in a bay in Norway after being stricken by a fast moving pneumonia at an estimated age of 26.

The story of Keiko touched millions of lives - mine included. He was a glaring example of the process of capturing whales and other sea mammals for entertainment purposes. Somehow, I don't think that his life or his death will stop the practice.

Well it's all over the news so you probably already know that Saddam Hussein was arrested in Iraq (BBC, 12/14/03). He was found in a pit fitted with ventilation outside of Tikrit. Purportedly, US forces have verified through a DNA sample that this is indeed Saddam Hussein. Hmm, I thought it took several weeks to do a DNA match, but then the DoD has resources that others do not.

Early analysis (Saddam's capture: What it means, Aljazeera) sees this as a political coup, but is not likely to change Iraqi's feelings about the occupation.

US paying damages in Iraq

Share/Save/Bookmark | Sphere: Related Content

By Rowan Wolf

One has to wonder why this is being kept quiet in the US press - US pays up for fatal Iraq blunders, McCarthy, Guardian/UK, 11/26/03). According to the report, the US military has paid 10,402 claims to Iraqi's who have lost family members, been seriously injured, or lost property in non-combat related incidents. These settlements are not for damages during combat, but in the pursuit of other activities.

The military is not giving out figures on how many claims have been filed, nor how many of those filed have been accepted. According to the military, payments are only made "for non-combat related activities and instances where soldiers have acted negligently or wrongfully."

For those of you who have been reading Uncommon Thought awhile, you may remember a great discussion we had last March about whether the US invasion of Iraq violated international law (Why do we believe 3/28/03). Well yesterday Richard Perle was speaking at an event in London and stated: "I think in this case international law stood in the way of doing the right thing." Somewhat later he stated: "international law ... would have required us to leave Saddam Hussein alone" ( War Critics Astonished as US Hawk Admits Invasion was Illegal, Burkeman & Borger, Guardian/UK, 11/20/03).

This means that even at the time, the Administration knew it was violating International Law and proceeded anyway - rebuking those nations that refused to break the law with them.

FDA says cloned meat and products safe

Share/Save/Bookmark | Sphere: Related Content

By Rowan Wolf

Well. I was mostly right and somewhat wrong on my earlier call on the FDA's initial report. As expected, their early findings say that eating meat or products from cloned animals is "safe" and won't require labeling (Gerstenzang, LA Times, 10/31/03, FDA Official: No Need for Labels on Cloned Products). I was wrong in that it made bigger news than I expected.

There is an interesting take on this by Thomas Hoban (a sociologist and food scientist at NC State University). He believes that cloned products will not be acceptable to consumers because of people's sens of kinship with animals and concern about that the next clone approval will be human (Expert Can Discuss Impact of FDA Policy on Cloned Animals, Food, Newswise, 10/31/03).

What most of the TV reports are leaving out however, is that the products will not be labeled. Therefore, we finicky consumers won't know that the meat, milk, pork roast, etc is from a cloned source.

The final decision will not be until next year (unless the FDA fast tracks it). There is still time to mobilize to fight their decision. Keep your eyes open for petitions to that effect. If you see any forward them my way and I'll help get the word out.

Last night on Bill Moyer's NOW they did an investigative piece called New Math? which looked at the cooking of statistics (and the costs to children) of Texas' education reform. This is of concern outside of Texas because the Bush education plan (No Child Left Behind) is based on the Texas approach, and Rod Paige, who was in charge of the Texas experiment, is now the Secretary of Education. So I urge you to take a look at how the Texas numbers came out so "good."

What caught my interest though was a statement that the Houston school district was 80% economically disadvantaged. That is HUGE, and so I decided to see what it was nationally.

UN Security Council Resolution 1511

The UN Security Council passed Resolution 1511 on 10/16/03. The passage of this resolution is sure to be hailed by the US as demonstrating international support for its activities in Iraq. While this is a "victory" of sorts, it does not seem to be what the US hoped, and is a long way from where the US started. Here is a link to the full text of UN SC Resolution 1511.

Starting off Resolution 1511 is reference to several other previous resolutions which are instructive in forming a context for 1511. First is Resolution 1483 of 6/22/03. This Security Council Resolution angered the US because it kept in place the resolution for confirming Iraq had no "wmd" as a prerequisite to continuing the "oil for food" program which had been in place under Hussein's government. The US had requested that all sanctions on Iraq be lifted as they had overthrown Hussein and occupied Iraq. Resolution 1483 was not a victory either, but did conditionally ease some restrictions.

Resolution 1500 of 8/14/03 granted authority for the formation of a UN Mission to Iraq.

Resolution 1373 9/28/03, which was a condemnation of terrorism. It called for cooperation among nations to end terrorism.

Who is exporting weapons of mass destruction?

Share/Save/Bookmark | Sphere: Related Content

By Rowan Wolf

While the claims resurface about fears of Saddam Hussein's exporting weapons to terrorists, and the "war on terrorism" continues unabated, what has our Pentagon been doing? Selling "bio-packs" over the internet (Radio Netherlands, 10/09/03). This has got to be one of the most under reported pieces of news I've seen in a while.

According the report, the General Accounting Office (GAO) discovered the activity as part of an investigation into allegations that the Pentagon was selling "sensitive" material. The "bio-packs" could be used to manufacture biological weapons. Front offices for the sales were in Egypt and the Phillipines - areas with suspected high numbers of terrorist cells.

The items sold are on the international lists of banned equipment.

I guess that the spin on this could be that it was a Pentagon "sting" operation. The only problem being that sales were actually made.

This goes on the ever-growing list of activities needing investigation.

Phase 2 of the Iraq PR Campaign?

Share/Save/Bookmark | Sphere: Related Content

By Rowan Wolf

As has been trumpeted all over the print media, the Bush Administration has launched a public relations campaign to boost support for US policy in Iraq. Is this bit of news - Newspapers Around US Get Identical Missives from Iraq (King, The Olympian, 10/11/03) - part of that campaign, or some over enthusiastic "patriot" at work? Either way, it totally crosses so many ethcial lines that I can't count them.

Newspapers around the country have received identical letters from "home town" soldiers posted in Iraq. The letters talk about how much good they have done in Iraq, and how happy the people are to have them there. Each letter has the name of a different soldier and their "signature." Unfortunately, investigations have thus far found that none of the soldiers wrote or signed the letter.

Whoever sent the letters has some basic information about those serving in the 2nd Batallion of the 502nd Infantry (such as their names, ranks, and home towns), and a desire to place positive information out there about US presence in Iraq.

This is really a low way of garnering support, and falls into the category of being told something by a friend - one has a tendency to give credence to what they say. However, the friend didn't write the letter or even know that it was written. This is a damned dirty way to drum up support for US policy regardless of who did it.

This deserves to be investigated. If it was a prankster, then they should be dealt with under the law. If this is part of the Iraq PR campaign, then everyone should know and appropriate action be taken.

The DoD, operating much as it has with Gulf War Syndrome is skewing its vaccination data. The military gives the troops a whole slew of vaccinations. The two that are raising the most concern are those for anthrax and small pox. According to Maryl Nass (an MD working with a number of veterans with negative side effects from the vaccination program) the DoD is not reporting either side effects or deaths due to the vaccination program. They are significantly screening the data that they have. This is a BIG issue since the largest group vaccinated is the military. Since the Bush administration is pushing both anthrax and small pox vaccines for the public, it is natural to look to the largest vaccinated population for indicators of possible problems. If the military skews or doesn't report the data, then the vaccines look less risky than they actually are.

Things don't seem to be calming down

State sponsored terrorism

This just came to my attention and wanted to pass it on ... Pentagon eyes massive covert attack on Iran. Apparently the Pentagon is using (or wants to use) the MEK a mujahedeen group inside Iran to overthrow the ruling ayatollahs. MEK is on the terrorist group list and was actually partially sponsored by Hussein to destabilize Iran.

I wonder if our aliies in the war on terrorism, or the "coalition of the willing" are going to strike the US as a "state sponsor of terrorism."

The next regime change?

By Rowan Wolf

Well al-Qaida worked so well with Iraq why don't we try Iran (Pentagon sets sights on a new Tehran regime)? Obviously the American sheeple don't care as long as "we" win, so reasons for invading are just for show anyway.

QUOTE:" The Pentagon has proposed a policy of regime change in Iran, after reports that al-Qaida leaders are coordinating terrorist attacks from Iran.

Like Afghanistan, the problem is alleged to be that Iran is not turning over terrorists to the US. Of course, like Iraq, Iran also (allegedly) has "WMDs." An obviously successful combination. All we need are the reports that President Khatami is engaging in atrocities against the people of Iran and we are all set to go.

I heard on the news this morning that the $400 billion tax cut currently being negotiated had a little "drafting error." Instead of ending taxation on dividends, it was retroactive to when dividends first became taxable (70 years ago). This would make a "small" windfall for very wealthy investors of roughly $70 billion. I'm sure it was just a clerical error.

Senate Bill S. 1025 Intelligence Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2004 (Reported in Senate) expands "intelligence gathering and supports construction of a terrorist 'watch list.' See Select Intelligence Committee Press Release - May 1, 2003.

To quote from the press release:
"In its provisions, the bill addresses policy and resource constraints that limit information sharing and intelligence analysis. The need to improve government information sharing was one of the principal findings of the Joint Inquiry into the events leading up to the terrorist attacks of September 11th. It also lays the basis for more fundamental reforms by requiring the Executive Branch to review and report to Congress on issues such as the need to revise Executive Orders and security policies consistent with improved information sharing in the computer age. Other provisions assist the Director of Central Intelligence by providing additional management flexibility for personnel and construction issues and by eliminating a number of recurring and burdensome Congressionally directed reports."

'A Christian's Duty'
by Matt Bivens

Before this Administration came along, it was hard to imagine that something as intensely personal and private as a man's prayer before going into battle could be appropriated in a business-like fashion. Now, according to "A Christian's Duty in Time of War" -- a pamphlet given out to thousands of Marines in Iraq -- our soldiers in the war zone are supposed to fill out a form pledging to pray every day for George Bush. The pamphlet has a tear-out section which the soldier is to sign and mail to the president: "I have committed to pray for you, your family, your staff ..." The pamphlets were created by In Touch Ministries, an evangelical group that says "We may not all be in the military, but we are all engaged in warfare ... spiritual warfare."

Today's prayer: "Pray that the President and his advisers will be strong and courageous to do what is right regardless of critics." (Translation: Pray that, even if all agree this war is a horrific catastrophe, even if Congress leaps to its feet in anger and despair, even if millions of Americans pour into the streets begging to bring you home -- even then, pray that the president will wave aside his critics and order you forward.) Wednesday's: "Pray that the President and his advisers will be safe, healthy, well-rested and free from fear." (Well-rested?) Friday's prayer cuts to the chase: "Pray that the President and his advisers will recognize their divine appointment ..." It includes some helpfully illuminating scripture, Romans 13:1: "Every person is to be in subjugation to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those which exist are established by God."

SB742 Update

Well, some of us went down to Salem yesterday to show support against SB742 and to testify against it. It was difficult to determine how many people actually turned out because they ended up with people in 3 different rooms (the hearing room, and two rooms connected via TV). Given that, there were at least 150 people there.

The Committee apparently only allowed about an hour and a half for testimony so very few actually got the opportunity to speak to the bill (about 10 people in all). All those who spoke were against the bill.

Chairman Minnis, said that he would schedule another hearing at a later date. (So keep your eyes and ears open).

I strongly encourage you to contact the committee and your legislators to let them know how you feel about this bill. Information about contacting Oregon Legislators and information about the bill was given in an earlier post Oregonians - Urgent Action Alert.

It's all over the news, so most of you probably already know this, but the "Azores Summit" concluded with Bush and Blair saying that tomorrow is the last day for the UN to step up to the plate. Bush will be meeting with his advisers tomorrow (Monday). The hint was that the full-scale invasion would likely begin Tuesday or Wednesday (US time). Hussein is preparing for all out attack and issuing threats that the invaders will never live to leave Iraq.

I think that the BBs are less concerned about Saddam Hussein than with the global peace movement gaining more hearts and minds. Both Britain and the US are "democracies" you know, and I doubt they want a percentage to argue against such has risen up in Turkey.

When I heard this report on the news I couldn't believe my ears - nor the reasoning given. Check this story Israeli army bulldozer crushes US peace protester in Gaza Strip.

Rachel Corie of Olympia, Wa. was in Gaza as part of the International Solidarity Movement. Witnesses say that she was deliberately run over by the bulldozer. Protesters were present to stop the demolition of houses in Gaza. The report that I heard said that the protesters had gotten "careless."

I personally see this as a terrorist act. An attempt to scare protesters from around the world who have shown up in Israel and the occupied territories and in Iraq. This is a sad day. My support go out to the friends and family of Rachel Corie, and to the other brave individuals around the world putting themselves in harms way for peace.

The "war" is getting bigger. The US has now sent troops to fight - not just advise- to the Philippines. See the AP release Filipino protests expected as US sends troops to fight in war against rebels.

So now we have the following areas where it is publicized that we are militarily active: Afghanistan, Iraq and the Philippines.

Keep your eyes on these other "theaters:" North Korea, Syria, Iran, Colombia, and Venezuela.

We purportedly have between 150,000 and 182,000 troops ready to go into Iraq. We have approximately 2.5 million armed forces (counting the Reserves and Guards). As you know, Reserve call-ups are at an all time high. Each unit thinks they are being sent to Iraq (or at least that is what the "news" reports). It seems likely that as our engagements expand, so will the the stationing of troops.

Please help keep an eye on areas being largely ignored during the massive media push on Iraq. You can forward links to me directly through the email link.

Bush and Al-Arian

By Rowan Wolf

According to news now leaking out, for example, Sami Al-Arian [a former professor at the U of South Florida until he lost his job over negative publicity in the wake of 9/11/01, and has now been arrested under vast publicity for supporting "terrorism"] was an ardent supporter of President Bush's election campaign, and even got his picture taken with the President.

Al-Arian was given security clearance into the White House to meet with Bush as part of a 160 member organization (American Muslim Council) who were to be briefed on Bush's faith-based agenda "and other issues" on June 22, 2001 (Oregonian 2/22/03 A4).

One might ask, why the "law" has focused over and over again on Al-Arian. This is a man who was clearly known by the FBI and Secret Service; whose son served as a Congressional intern (who Bush nicknamed "Big Dude;") who campaigned heavily for Bush and even met with him (under at least two different circumstances).

Perhaps Al-Arian is yet another victim of DOJ zealousness with their 25% batting average and 75% lying average (see How effective is the Patriot Act). Whatever is up, it doesn't seem that President Bush's "nose for evil" was working particularly well, or maybe that John Ashcroft has lost this "sense" entirely.

Finally some good news
