In the category of "you can't make this stuff up," we have the case of corruption in New Jersey which ranks right up there. The FBI have arrested 3 Mayors and numerous assemblymen, and a couple of rabbis (40 plus folks so far), on charges of money laundering and at least one case of selling a human organ on the black market.

Consumer Alert: For Wamu Mortgage Holders

This is a heads up for those of you who may have a mortgage with Washington Mutual. Those mortgages are in the process of transition to Chase. I accidentally found this issue, and there was no warning from either Wamu or Chase. I discovered by checking my mortgage online that the payment date of my mortgage had been changed from the 6th of the month to the 1st of the month.

Since my mortgage is paid automatically from my account, this is a big deal. Since I get paid between the 1st and the 4th of the month depending on weekends and holidays, it is entirely possible that the automatic payment of my mortgage could overdraw my account. If this date change also effects people who mail in their payments, then if you are not paying attention, you could potentially be late on your payment.

ADDITIONALLY I have received warnings from my veterinarians concerning chicken products and kidney failure in pets. This is related to yet another melamine contamination issue from China.

*** FDA Warning: Chicken Jerky Treats ***
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) cautions consumers about a potential association between the development of illness in dogs and the consumption of chicken jerky products from China. Chicken treats labeled as "jerky, tenders, or strips" should be avoided. Since an estimated 99% of all chicken treats are exported from China, we urge extreme caution when selecting pet treats. Which treats are SAFE to feed our pets? We highly recommend and feed our OWN dogs IVD Natural Apple & Oat Treats, HILLS Prescription Diet Hypoallergenic Treats (for dogs with sensitivities), and Butler's Lean Treats made with skinless chicken breast.

Cheney Must Keep Records

The Bush administration takes a loss (for now) on it challenge of the Presidential Records Act. The administration was sued by Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) for trying to narrow the definition of what records Dick Cheney needs to reveal. The administration wanted to narrow the records to those from the Vice President's Office. However, a federal judge ruled that a broader range of records must be preserved. The suit arose out of Cheney's claim that the Vice President's office is a separate hinterland of government that is not part of either the executive or legislative branch of government.

For those of you who did not see Keith Obermann's interview with Scott McClellan delving into issues from his new book (What Happened: Inside the Bush White House and Washington's Culture of Deception), here is the link to the interview Interview. The interview is in approximately 15 minute chunks. The order of the full program is in reverse number order. The beginning is #5, second part is #4 etc. Below is the beginning of the interview:

Probably the most critical revelation comes at about nine minutes into #5 (the beginning of the interview) where McClellan retells Bush telling him that he authorized Scooter Libby to leak portions of the classified National Intelligence Estimate (NIE).

... and a reporter shouted out to the President "Is it true that you authorized the secret leaking (the NIE) of this previously classified information" (though the President does have the legal authority) walk onto Airforce 1 and the President asked "What was the reporter asking?" And I said "He asserted that you were the one who authorized Scooter Libby leaking this information." And he said "Yeah, I did." And it really took me back.

Pet food contamination - Update

By Rowan Wolf

The most recent information on the contamination of pet and animal food is coming from some research done by scientists at the University of Guelph in Ontario Canada. Their tests indicate that the combination of melamine and cyanuric acid, when combined with the acidic environment of the urinary tract create crystal found in the kidneys of some of the dead cats. This is a significant finding as neither of those compounds seem to be in significant enough amounts to cause the damage and death that has been seen.

The scientists report that there is other "stuff" that they have yet to identify in their studies.

The current list of recalled foods can be found at the FDA Recall List.

While it has not been added to the US list of problematic ingredients, there was an article today from South Africa of renal failure in dogs and cats due to melamine in corn gluten. While the food was processed in South Africa, the gluten - once again - came from suppliers in China. This would place on the danger list wheat, rice, and corn gluten and concentrated vegetable protein from any of these sources.

Pet Food Recall Expanded

Here we go again. The pet food recall has been expanded again. They have found the same contaminant (melamine) in rice gluten. The source of this contamination was also from China, but another manufacturer. Of significant concern is that China is resisting inspections, which may be an issue of national control, or may reflect a much larger issue with food production for export. To keep track of the recall, and see what foods and brands recalled check out the FDA Pet Food Recall site.

On the preventative side, you might look at local producers of pet food as a supplier, or switch to making you own pet food. I will investigate this and report back on options in the near future. If you know of any safe sources, or balanced pet food recipes, please feel free to either contact me or share them in the comments section.

Latest info from the FDA

There have been several changes in the pet food recall. The recall has been extended to some more varieties of both canned AND dry pet foods. While it looks to me like there is confusion still over what the exact problem is, veterinarians are now recommending to not feed any food (wet or dry) that has wheat gluten in it.

Meanwhile, the FDA has named Xuzhou Anying Biologic Technology Development Co. Ltd. from China as the source of the gluten, and has mandatory monitoring on any wheat gluten from China or the Netherlands.

Last night (in the U.S.) the UK initiated a critical alert at airports in response to a possible plot to blow up commercial airplanes in flight out of the UK. The focus is on the possibility of liquid explosives which has caused a restriction on virtually all carry-on liquids in both the UK and the US. Apparently, the UK informed Bush "earlier in the week" of the threat. It is not clear, but it seems the current response was set in motion by a possible attack on a flight out of Qatar. According to the Reuters' report, passengers and stewards stopped an Eritrean man trying to get into the cockpit of a Qatar Airlines plane. The plane returned safely to Amman, Jordan.

The Pentagon has released two video clips of the explosion at the Pentagon on 9/11/01. Here are the links to those videos: video 1, and video 2. I downloaded the videos and watched them frame by frame using Video Edit Magic. I must say that the only thing that is certain is that something exploded and started a large fire. In going through the videos frame by frame, it looks as if the video has been cut. However, this may not be the case as if the video was put together from still images then the time lag at the first appearance of the object onto the screen compared to the frames to the explosion is disproportionately long. I cannot determine what it was that hit the Pentagon. Watch it yourself and see if you can make an identification.

If you are nervous about downloading or viewing the files from the Pentagon site, you may download here.

Public Comment Period for this rule Closes December 12, 2005

Public comments are now being accepted by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on its newly proposed federal regulation regarding the testing of chemicals and pesticides on human subjects. On August 2, 2005, Congress had mandated the EPA create a rule that permanently bans chemical testing on pregnant women and children. But the EPA's newly proposed rule, misleadingly titled "Protections for Subjects in Human Research," puts industry profits ahead of children's welfare. The rule allows for government and industry scientists to treat children as human guinea pigs in chemical experiments in the following situations:

  1. Children who "cannot be reasonably consulted," such as those that are mentally handicapped or orphaned newborns may be tested on. With permission from the institution or guardian in charge of the individual, the child may be exposed to chemicals for the sake of research.
  2. Parental consent forms are not necessary for testing on children who have been neglected or abused.
  3. Chemical studies on any children outside of the U.S. are acceptable.

Yay! FINALLY, someone does something that makes sense about Avian Flu. China is going to vaccinate all of its poultry. Now that is no small task with roughly 5.2 billion birds to be vaccinated. This is the first action to stop a pandemic that has made any sense at all. Stop the virus at the birds. By protecting the poultry from bird flu, it should dramatically reduce the risks of transmission to humans (in its current form), thereby reducing the risks of it muting to a highly communicable human to human form. Thank you China for taking truly positive action.. Logistically, this will be a difficult undertaking, but then so is culling millions of birds each time there is an outbreak.

First is that the sneaks in Washington have included a provision in the "omnibus" budget package to significantly erode access to legal abortions.

The abortion language would bar federal, state and local agencies from withholding taxpayer money from health care providers that refuse to provide or pay for abortions or refuse to offer abortion counseling or referrals. Current federal law, aimed at protecting Roman Catholic doctors, provides such "conscience protection'' to doctors who do not want to undergo abortion training. The new language would expand that protection to all health care providers, including hospitals, doctors, clinics and insurers.

Well, the attack on Falluja has begun. From the reports thus far there are lots of bombing and strafing runs, and US and Iraqi troops have entered the city. It is likely there will be a high casualty toll for both US and Iraqi troops as well as for civilians in the city. I don't know if the current action is necessary or not, but I do believe that this should never have happened. Let us hope that the insurgents surrender and the conflict is short-lived. There is no chance that Zarqawi will be captured as the military reports he most likely left Falluja weeks ago (heard that on the radio this morning).

The National Business Review has the 18 minute transcript of bin Laden's latest tape. If you want to compare transcripts, Al Jazeera has another full transcript. The NBR says that Al Jazeera edited the transcript and it leaves out parts. Namely:

Among the key lines omitted by al Jazeera was a general threat of on-going warfare: "We want to restore freedom to our Nation and just as you lay waste to our Nation, so shall we lay waste to yours."

Perhaps more significant were several long passages in which bin Laden rejoices in the economic costs of the war to America -- and identifies Iraq as a key aspect of al Qaeda's strategy to force the American economy into bankruptcy.

Saddam May Run for President

Well wouldn't this be a true irony if Saddam Hussein runs for President of Iraq and Wins? Outrageous you say? Well according to Zaman Online, Saddam is planning to Declare his Candidacy for the Iraqi Elections (thanks to Information Clearing House for this one). Given what has been going down in Iraq, a number of Iraqi's may feel a bit nostalgic about Hussein. It would be beyond ironic, if after the destruction of a nation and the deaths of tens of thousands that Iraq reelected Hussein.

I guess that I should feel validated or reassured when the headlines confirm what I already know, but somehow it just ticks me off. For example, despite the Bush administration constantly reiterating they had no "torture" policy (I've already flogged that topic) today's headline reads Bush team 'knew of abuse' at Guantánamo. Well, for those with short memories, how about this one from 9/23/03 - "Did U.S. Forces Allow a Massacre of 3,000 Taliban Prisoners to Occur?" . Or how about this from 3/07/03 - Afghan Prisoners Beaten to Death at US Military Interrogation Base.

The tragedy of the hostage situation in Beslan, Russia at Middle School No. 1 continues its grisly unfolding. On Wednesday, an unknown number of armed people slipped into the school and took students, parents, and staff hostage. It was the first day of school. Early in the hostage situation, there was a release of some hostages. Then without warning everything blew up - literally. The captors had wired series of explosives around the gym where many of the hostages were being held. Then yesterday there was an exchange of fire between the captors and Russian forces followed by a series of explosions which collapsed the roof of the gym on the heads of the captives. This set off open battle between Russian Special Forces and the captors. The current count is 322 dead (151 of whom are children) and hundreds more injured.

Remember Valerie Plame and the FBI investigation into who in the White House leaked her identity to Novak who outted her as an under cover agent? Well after all the run around, a name has been released though it made hardly a ripple in the news. Well a reporter for Time Magazine, Matthew Cooper, has told DoJ prosecutors that he got his leak from I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby. Yes, Scooter who is chief of staff for Vice President Cheney (8/25/04, Leonnig, Wa. Post). "Scooter" was an early favorite in the outing of Plame. Therefore, it is not surprising to have this information come out. The question remains of what will be done.

The SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission) is contemplating filing suit against Freddie Mac for its "errors".

The Securities and Exchange Commission gave the McLean-based company what is known as a Wells notice, informing the board of directors that the agency might file a civil complaint, seeking a permanent injunction and a fine, over the company's accounting errors. Freddie Mac has acknowledged that it misstated profits by $5 billion over three years, 2000 through 2002.

This is big news and effects U.S. taxpayers directly as Freddie Mac is a Government Sponsored Enterprise.

Let's get moral shall we? As you all know, Bush & Co, as well as the Republicans, think that the way to end poverty is by teaching celibacy. The BBC reports that the Bush Administration has given $700,000 to a project called "The Silver Ring Thing" a project for young people who vow to abstain from sexual activity. It has been such a success in the US (over 1 million have taken the pledge) that the group has moved on to Britain. In true reverse effect style, the article cites an American study:

"The depressing reality is that abstinence education actually increases teenage pregnancies. An American study showed that nine out of 10 young people who took a sexual abstinence pledge went on to break it, and because they were so unprepared and guilty they were far less likely to use contraception."

So much for that (specious) causative link between sexual activity and poverty.

Three important reports

CBS News has three video clips from tonight's news (6/12/04) that you should watch. They are available at CBS News Video. When you click on the video link for a story it will show the whole list. Sorry, I don't know how to link to a specfic clip.

The first is "Got Oil" and it is about the overstatement by oil companies - such as Shell - of the oil reserve. Apparently there may be a significant gap between the real reserve and what has been reported. This as tremendous impact on the peak oil issue, and may indicate that we are already past the peak (perhaps significantly).

Inactive Reserve ordered to report

Update 5/17/04 There is still no broader coverage, but I have found a bit more information which is included at the end of this article.

On the local news last night I heard that the I.R.R. (Inactive Reserve) are being mobilized, and are to make contact by Monday. I am having difficulty finding any real information about this. From the report last night, Inactive Reservists need to contact their commanders to get more information and indicate their assignment preferences. This call up effects about 120,000 Reservists in Oregon and Washington. Apparently Oregon and Washington are not the only states being recalled. The Tennessee Army National Guard is holding family mobilization meetings and are leaving for Camp Shelby (Miss.) on June 17th. In a press release from Army Public Affairs, "obiligated" IRR soldiers are being screened for possible assignments.

The commander interviewed last night was shocked by the mobilization, and that the order had only gone out on the web (which site was not noted). He said that Inactive Reservists would be getting letters - probably Monday. The only direct information I found was National Guard and Reserve Mobilized as of May 12, 2004 from the DoD link.

If you have any information, please let me know.
UPDATE - 1700 pacific time
Well still can't find anything in print, but the TV news says that the Portland Inactive Reserve should report to the National Guard Armory to put in their assignment preferences. Those who do not will be involunarily assigned.

Well The Center for American Progress had delivered to them what appears to be the notes of an aide sent to brief Rumsfeld on fallout from the 911 Commission - Found at Starbucks: The Pentagon's Papers. Apparently an aide stopped at Starbucks and left behind some interesting notes which a customer found and truned over to CAP. Cap has placed the notes on line at Eric's Notes - with some commentary from CAP added. THe drift seems to be:
- the administration took al Qaeda seriously and had plans to go after them
- reinforce how important the 9/11 Commission is to the administration
- stay within the story - this will blow over.

Well this is interesting if this is not a plant.

There is also a piece in the Washington Post about it - 3/31/04 Kamen, Wa. Post, Note to Eric: U Need 2B More Careful

There is a US citizen (Susan Lindauer) who has been arrested as a spy for Iraq US woman held for being Iraq spy (Al-Jazeera, 3/12/04). Apparently, she is a distant cousin to Andrew Card (Seattle PI, 3/11/04) Bush's chielf of staff. Well why would anyone be surprised Rebel Claims Control Over Haiti's Security (Wa. Post, 3/03/04). Guy Philippe has declared himself "chief" of the Haitian security forces and demanded that the Prime Minister declare the army official again. When there was no response, he attempted to arrest Prime Minister Yvon Neptune, but was blocked by Marines (Haiti rebels flex muscles, U.S. warns, Reuters, 3/03/04). Meanwhile, the Bush administration is saying it Sees No Rebel Role in New Haiti Government (Wa. Post, 3/03/04). Did anyone expect that the rebels wouldn't try to claim power? Who do they expect to step forward? Baby Doc? Oh yeah he has applied to return to Haiti.

News Flash
According to an exclusive report airing on DemocracyNow! PRESIDENT ARISTIDE SAYS 'I WAS KIDNAPPED'
'TELL THE WORLD IT IS A COUP'
(3/01/04). The transcript states that Aristide was told that his US security force was being withdrawn and that Philippe (the paramilitary leader) would storm the palace and kill him. He was then kidnapped as is noted in the following quote (emphases mine):

TransAfrica founder and close Aristide family friend Randall Robinson also received a call from the Haitian president early this morning and confirmed Waters account. Robinson said that Aristide "emphatically" denied that he had resigned. "He did not resign," he said. "He was abducted by the United States in the commission of a coup." Robinson says he spoke to Aristide on a cell phone that was smuggled to the Haitian president.

A case of suspected Mad Cow Disease (BSE or Bovine Spongiform Encephylits) has occured in the US. The cow came from a farm in Mabton, Washington (about 70 miles south of Yakima) and parts of the animal passed through at least three processing plants (Interstate Meats of Federal Way (Wa.), Willamette Meats (OR) and a processing plant in Iowa) before the alert was issued. Mad cow surfaces in U.S., Alberts, Canada.com, 12/24/03.; Washington animal first mad cow case in nation, Dworkin, Oregonian, 12/24/03.

The cow was obviously ill before it was slaughtered and was referred to as a "downer." In other words it was falling down before slaughter (Dworkin article and USDA press release).

Keiko is dead

Oregonians have a special place in their hearts for the killer whale Keiko. Keiko was the star of the "Free Willy" movies, and many took that to heart with an amazing attempt to return him to freedom. Keiko died in a bay in Norway after being stricken by a fast moving pneumonia at an estimated age of 26.

The story of Keiko touched millions of lives - mine included. He was a glaring example of the process of capturing whales and other sea mammals for entertainment purposes. Somehow, I don't think that his life or his death will stop the practice.

Well it's all over the news so you probably already know that Saddam Hussein was arrested in Iraq (BBC, 12/14/03). He was found in a pit fitted with ventilation outside of Tikrit. Purportedly, US forces have verified through a DNA sample that this is indeed Saddam Hussein. Hmm, I thought it took several weeks to do a DNA match, but then the DoD has resources that others do not.

Early analysis (Saddam's capture: What it means, Aljazeera) sees this as a political coup, but is not likely to change Iraqi's feelings about the occupation.

US paying damages in Iraq

One has to wonder why this is being kept quiet in the US press - US pays up for fatal Iraq blunders, McCarthy, Guardian/UK, 11/26/03). According to the report, the US military has paid 10,402 claims to Iraqi's who have lost family members, been seriously injured, or lost property in non-combat related incidents. These settlements are not for damages during combat, but in the pursuit of other activities.

The military is not giving out figures on how many claims have been filed, nor how many of those filed have been accepted. According to the military, payments are only made "for non-combat related activities and instances where soldiers have acted negligently or wrongfully."

On Sunday, two soldiers were attacked and killed in Mosul. THe original reports were that they had been traveling in private transport and were shot, dragged from their vehicle, and beaten by a crowd of folks. While this is still the story (as of Monday night) being reported by Canadain Broadcasting, it is interesting that the Army is revising their report of events (Filkins, NY Times, 11/25/03). According to the revised reports, the two soldiers were shot and robbed., but they were not "mutilated."
