I hate it when I get incomplete information. Of course, that happens all the time, but a piece of news today rang alarm bells. Namely, Afghans agree to take over U.S. prison at Bagram (1/10/2010). According to the piece from Reuters, and as noted elsewhere over the years, the Bagram prison (housed in a converted aircraft hanger) has been the "more evil twin" of Guantanamo.

If you missed Bill Moyers for 1/08/2010 the I highly recommend watching the interview with David Corn and Kevin Drum, or reading the transcript of the program. Moyers was interviewing them, in part, because of their articles in the January/February 2010 print edition of Mother Jones. While it was not uplifting, it was insightful into the dynamics of the power of Wall Street.

The Chilcot Inquiry - Heard of It?

Have you heard of the Chilcot Inquiry? If you are in the U.S., the answer is likely "No". The Chilcot Inquiry - also known as "The Iraq Inquiry" - is the UK's investigation into the events that led to and followed from the invasion of Iraq. The Chair of the investigation is Sir John Chilcot who stated the purpose of the inquiry as follows:

"Our terms of reference are very broad, but the essential points, as set out by the Prime Minister and agreed by the House of Commons, are that this is an Inquiry by a committee of Privy Counsellors. It will consider the period from the summer of 2001 to the end of July 2009, embracing the run-up to the conflict in Iraq, the military action and its aftermath. We will therefore be considering the UK's involvement in Iraq, including the way decisions were made and actions taken, to establish, as accurately as possible, what happened and to identify the lessons that can be learned. Those lessons will help ensure that, if we face similar situations in future, the government of the day is best equipped to respond to those situations in the most effective manner in the best interests of the country."

First calling themselves "tea baggers" - thanks to lack of cultural knowledge about the sexual nature of that term - increasingly this nation-wide collection of populace is being referred to as the "Tea Party." While it surely intended to stoke the "patriotic" fervor of those who see themselves as part of this movement, this appellation is very inaccurate.

A True Gift for Veterans - Peace

The U.S. is deeply embedded in the mythology of the heroism of the warrior culture. There is a lot of rhetoric about the courage and sacrifice of the those who have fought (versus those who have served) for our "freedom." Never is that "freedom" defined. However, it is true that many have served - willingly or not - under the belief they our protecting our "freedom" and "our way of life." I will not besmirch those sacrifices, nor will I be silent on the utterly shameful way that both the government and the people of the United States have met the needs of those who have served. We call them "heroes," but as a nation living with heroes is a more difficult task than remembering (once in a while) those who have died.

The craze of late has been that natural gas will be a primary solution to the energy problem in the United States. This news has come as supposedly vast natural gas reserves have been found, and the natural gas industry has found that its interests conflict with the coal and oil industries. The environmental community has also been thrown this bone that natural gas is an attractive alternative because of lower CO2 emissions, and is less destructive than the devastation of mountain top mining. This "alternative" falls in the category of "too good to be true," just like the vaporware of Obama's support of "clean coal."

Economists state that "Higher unemployment might become the norm as result of (the) recession." The problem is that this is not simply a "recession," but the collapse of the heavily skewed global economic system. The follies of monopoly capitalism, combined with the funny money financial schemes, have hit the world hard. However, they have hit the United States particularly hard, and may have permanently damaged the economic dominance of the United States.

The realities are grim, and seem counter-intuitive to any strategy whatsoever. Unfortunately Obama committed early on to Afghanistan as "the good war." A bad choice in my opinion, but that campaign rhetoric commitment is part of the anchor which now is likely to hold him to certain constraints.

In the heat of healthcare reform and the mobilization of radical shock troops, the economy has drifted with little public discussion. When it comes up, it is frequently within the context that "the worst is behind us;" "we're leveling off;" or "recovery is just around the corner." While I wish all of this was true, I am concerned that it is not. While I wish that the Obama administration were being more honest, I believe they are engaging in the same type of spin we became accustomed to under the Bush administration.

Across the country there is a vocal minority who are loudly protesting certain issues. We have the "birther" folks who think that Obama is not a natural born citizen of the United States. We have the "deathers" (including Sarah Palin) who apparently think the government is going to use health care reform to kill the old and disabled. Then we have the anti-healthcare reformers who have a bucketfull of confusion and fears about socialism, fascism, and losing their "choice" in healthcare. All seem to be being spurred on by corporate backed "astroturf" organizations and by a few unethical media mouths.

Why Do We Need Universal Healthcare?

Why do we need universal healthcare? Let me share a personal story.

First, I have health insurance through my employer. They chip in and I chip in, and both my partner and myself are covered by a major HMO. Like all insurance, each year for about the last 10 years, the premium and deductibles have gone up. Sometimes more than 10% in a year. This is pretty typical. However, folks should realize that 10% per year increase means that the cost of health insurance doubles in seven years.

I was stunned to hear Hatch saying he supported healthcare for those who deserve it. Mitchell did not ask him who that was (or who the undeserving were). I was immediately transported back to Reagan with his discussions of the "deserving poor." Who DOESN'T "really deserve" healthcare. I can't even believe that the Republicans are going to pull this one out again. The clip below from the interview is approximately 52 seconds. It includes the Hatch quote in context.

Are you pulling your hair out over health care "reform?" I know I am, and I don't think Washington - or Obama - are listening. The current plans being discussed have been projected to expand healthcare costs. As I stated in an earlier article:

The short version of all of this is that healthcare reform should dramatically reduce healthcare costs and SAVE us money - not cost us more. If the projection is that a plan will cost us more money, then we can rest assured that private industry is getting its pockets lined at public expense, and that the system created is not truly serving the needs of the people.

What I Want in Healthcare Reform

I don't know about you, but I am pulling my hair out at the absolute insanity in the politics of the healthcare "debate." I want a 'single payer" system that provides UNIVERSAL healthcare. I do not want a system that tweeks the edges so cover a FEW more people. As I see it there are three components to the healthcare issue:

1. Healthcare is not accessible to a growing portion of the population.
2. Healthcare in the United States is the most expensive in the world.
3. Costs (and profits) are out of control.

What is clear is that the Iranian government is responding to harshly, even brutally, quash the protests. What is not clear, and what is conveniently not being reported is the role of foreign nations in what is happening in Iran.

Health Update

Hi All,

I am just touching base to give an update. The procedure went as smoothly as might have been hoped. The recovery has not gone quite as well as we might have hoped. The procedure has flared up the trigeminal neuralgia which makes sorting out some of the symptoms problematic. I still have pain and swelling from where the halo was mounted, and some ongoing drainage from one site. I am having decreased hearing in the left ear and some equilibrium issues. Nausea - in part likely due to the radiation and in part the equilibrium. Finally got some compazine for that so I can at least briefly get on the PC to send off some notes and check my email. There are pain issues, but I am managing them most of the time. Still fatigued as well.

I had a somewhat humorous / some what nerve wracking spell of "double hearing" - my left ear was "hearing" about 1/2 second behind the right. That has partially cleared - or the gap has gotten much closer to in-synch. Let me tell you - that was truly bizarre.

I had hoped to be back to relatively normal by today, but it looks like it may take a bit longer than that. It is hard to say what the longer term results will be. The increasing equilibrium problem is somewhat concerning, but may straighten out (no pun intended) with some time.Right now I am essentially doing nothing - kind of an enforced rest I guess. I can only read about 5 minutes at a time, same for TV. Bit boring.

I want to thank you for the supportive and encouraging notes you have sent - I have received them and warmed by them. It is my firm hope to be able to return to my contribution to the broader effort in the near future.

My gratitude and best wishes to you all.

The charge of "identity politics" has come up in relation to the nomination of Judge Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court. It has been an ugly attack with claims of Sotomayor's racism, belonging to the Hispanic version of the KKK, and that she is more concerned about issues of race than issues of law. She has even been labeled as "un-American." All of these are codes , and the real target is not Judge Sotomayor, it is to stimulate fear among a certain portion of the citizenry with the goal of moving them into the "Republican" camp. This is currently a camp whose leadership is apparently being battled out by Rush Limbaugh, Newt Gingrich, and Dick Cheney.

This is a heads up for those of you who may have a mortgage with Washington Mutual. Those mortgages are in the process of transition to Chase. I accidentally found this issue, and there was no warning from either Wamu or Chase. I discovered by checking my mortgage online that the payment date of my mortgage had been changed from the 6th of the month to the 1st of the month.

Since my mortgage is paid automatically from my account, this is a big deal. Since I get paid between the 1st and the 4th of the month depending on weekends and holidays, it is entirely possible that the automatic payment of my mortgage could overdraw my account. If this date change also effects people who mail in their payments, then if you are not paying attention, you could potentially be late on your payment.

The so-called "Patriot Act" had nothing to do with patriotism, but the naming was a brilliant public relations move. The changes to FISA - which had been confined to non-citizens and national security only, was expanded to include citizens and to allow mass tapping of communication hubs.

Not only CAN we say "No" to torture, we MUST say "No" to torture. Much of the torture "debate" has focused around the policies, legitimation, and use of torture under the Bush Administration. President Obama has repeatedly stated that he thinks that torture does not reflect our values. Indeed, he has said the he "believes" that waterboarding is torture. However, since taking office, he has increasingly shifted his rhetoric to "soften" the issue of torture. He increasingly refers to "enhanced interrogation." In his press conference marking his first hundred days in office, he referred to torture as a "shortcut." This conceptual and linguistic shifting is more than worrisome - it is downright alarming.

Dear Mr. Wolf, I was reading your May 2 TPM piece "On Torture and the Way Forward" and was sorry to see you identified Bruce Fein as being "associated" with The Heritage Foundation. While he was loosely associated with Heritage in the distant past, there has been no connection for years. Mr. Fein has been repeatedly advised that he is NOT associated with Heritage. There has been a lot of debate about the issue of torture in the wake of the release of the "torture memos" written during the Bush Administration. The memos, and ensuing reports, begin to open the curtain on the fact that there was a clear policy from the President and throughout the administration to utilize torture as a method of gaining intelligence information. Bill Moyers had Bruce Fein (Associate Deputy Attorney General under Reagan) and Mark Danner (journalist and the person who released the Red Cross reports on torture) discuss the implications of the Obama administration pursuing the issue.
