Marines and Afghan Dead - A Reality We Need to Discuss

By Rowan Wolf and some Vets.
updated 1/14/12 to include an additional quote

MarinesUrinatingOnCorpses.jpgThe "hot" news is about the Marine snipers urinating on the corpses of reported Taliban in Afghanistan. U.S. officialdom is pissing all over itself in apoplectic apology which hides multiple lies and nasty ironies.

The "irony" is that is is fine for the U.S. to kill civilians, have all kinds of "collateral damage," and friendly fire events. It is OK to drop "daisy cutter" bombs and kill with unmanned drones. It is OK to hold people for years in close confinement and without charge or trial; engage in "rendition," or even torture prisoners ourselves. But somehow, urinating on the dead is just a step too far.

I am honored to have friends who are Veterans - many of them Vets for Peace. I am more honored to have them share their thoughts with me on this issue and I want to share them here. These are things that need to be part of the dialog, because they are the lie that is covered up by the feigned horror of officialdom. Those apologies are not for Afghanis - they are for the U.S. and to hide the big lies of training people to kill on command.

Ron Paul in 2012 - An Ideological Delusion

It is quite possible that Ron Paul could win the Iowa caucuses. It is even possible that Paul could come out quite strong in a number of other primaries. While it is a long shot, Ron Paul could even take the Republican nomination; however, this latter is highly unlikely. Namely because Ron Paul is too far outside the pale of the current Republican Party. Regardless, Paul could find himself in a power position this year - a big step up from his usual marginalized status within the party.

As the economy has hit the crapper, so too have donations decreased for the Red Cross.

We are watching the destruction of an American institution which I feel needs to be saved. That institution is the US Postal Service. There has been an all out attack on the Postal Service to drive it out of existence. Why? I think there are two reasons the Republicans have gone after the Postal Service. First, because it has a large union and every effort is being made to destroy unions - particularly public sector unions. Second, ending the Postal Service is part of the long term plan to privatize everything in government.

So too his 21st Century Contract with America seems much like the 1994 Contract. Certainly the ideology has not changed, but it has gotten even meaner - particularly with the poor. Now he has thrown child labor into the mix.

Mic Check!

OccupyPortlandiaBull.jpg Portlandia rides the Wall Street Bull. Occupy Portland

There is a seemingly constant mantra from the corporate media propaganda machine, and now from some avowed "progressives" (such as Maddow, Harris-Perry, and Rhodes), that the Occupy Movement needs to focus its demands; make clear political policy statements; and form a "recognizable" organizational structure. Rachel Maddow had a conversation with Melissa Harris-Perry on November 17th regarding the Occupy Movement. It is summarized thusly on Maddow's site:

Melissa Harris-Perry, professor at Tulane University, talks with Rachel Maddow about how the Occupy Wall Street movement can convert its energy, passion and broad support into political power and action.

Two years ago I penned this piece and it is as pertinent now as it was then. Particularly in the context of what appears to be a global uprising against the concentration of power that is sinking the planet. So here is a republication of this piece that was originally published October 26, 2009.

Economists state that "Higher unemployment might become the norm as result of (the) recession." The problem is that this is not simply a "recession," but the collapse of the heavily skewed global economic system. The follies of monopoly capitalism, combined with the funny money financial schemes, have hit the world hard. However, they have hit the United States particularly hard, and may have permanently damaged the economic dominance of the United States.

Proud to Be a Portlander This Morning - Occupy Portland

By Rowan Wolf

I want to say that this morning I am proud to be a Portlander. Yesterday, Occupy Portland was supposed to be moved out of the encampments in Chapman Park and Lownsdale Square. Many people left (I imagine that many of those were the homeless and street kids who had moved into the embrace and resources of the Occupy encampment). Those who chose to stay were disproportionately pledged to meet what came with peaceful resistance, and a few were pledged to actively resist if it came to that (it didn't - or hasn't yet). As the time to "clear" the parks approached (12:01am Sunday 11/13) people began to to show up as witnesses. A call had gone out for people to come an stay throughout the night as witnesses, and an estimated 3,000 to 5,000 - yes FIVE THOUSAND Portlanders - did just that.

On the City's side of the equation, Mayor Sam Adams has continued to treat the Occupy protesters with respect and to try to preserve a peaceful relationship between the Police and the protesters. This is a big deal because he could have ordered an aggressive policy rather than one of restraint (as has been the case in other protests and with other mayors).

This morning, a number of the camp residents are cleaning up the parks (a massive job). The resistance continues. People outside the camps are still showing up to participate. Private citizens have contacted Nick Fish (city commissioner in charge of parks) to volunteer to help with park restoration and to pay for the costs of that project.

For now, the occupation continues and the protesters are clear, calm, and dedicated to the path of change. To those in the encampment -Thank you!

To the citizens who have showed up to add your voice and witness (keep the city honest), and particularly to those who stood through the night in the cold and the rain - Thank you!

To Mayor Adams and Commissioner Fish who have maintained a calm and respectful tone - Thank you!

To the police who have maintained your restraint and patience - Thank you!

To all of you and many more, thank you for making me proud to be a Portlander. I must say I have never had this experience before about any place I have lived.

USFlagHelp.jpgMSNBC has set itself out to capture the "progressives" in the corporate media. They have raided the "Air America" cast and some print media (like The Nation) and to pull them into the "mainstream." While some were barely left of center to start with (say Ed Schultz who has actually moved further left since he started), to others were actually strong progressives (not true left) voices such as Rachel Maddow. In the move, it appears that MSNBC is trying to create the impression of having a "progressive" component while it sets about neutering those voices.

Stop Dial It In Filibusters

The Daily Kos has a worthwhile campaign to get behind - making Senators actually have to stand up an filibuster. Currently, all they have to do is call a clerk and say they are filibustering. Please sign the Daily Kos Petition to make Senators actually filibuster. From the campaign email:

"This January 5th, we have a chance to change the rules of the Senate, and make Senators engage in an all night talk-a-thon in order to block legislation or nominations. We can make the filibuster a real filibuster, and put an end to obstruction for the sake of obstruction. The key is to adopt new rules on the first day the Senate convenes next year, when only a simple majority of Senators is required for a rules change."

Senators should have to make their appeal to the public to the people, and have their arguments against a Bill placed into the Congressional Record. No More "Dialing it in!"

A Wing and a Prayer

PeaceDove.jpg This has been a very difficult year for me. I have been very ill and diagnosed with Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension (PAH or PH), which is progressive fatal disease where high pressure in the pulmonary artery leads to right sided heart failure and destruction of the lungs. The only cure is a heart-lung transplant, but that is a different story for another day.

This has been a year of hard lessons on how much control we actually have in our lives, and the preciousness of each day. Every day is a gift and life is fleeting. For me, the root of what I have learned for me is that love is at the heart of everything. The love of my partner and friends ... my dogs ... and conversely the love I have for them, for the sentient beings which share our Mother Earth. That love has fueled by years of activism and my teaching. It is my passion and my dream that we, as a species, can learn to honor each other, the non-human beings, and this planet.

So this is my wish for you all ... We live life on a wing and a prayer so let your love and caring show. If we can all do this, then this may be the beginning of a year where we move forward in embracing our real possibility; heal the wounds of war and hate; and embrace the preciousness of the life on Mother Earth.

p.s. The Pulmonary Hypertension Association is a great resource and support for those having PH - and those who know someone with PH.

(online: Hard choices: Oregon state worker pay is a pivot point for budget showdown). The real question is "Why are private sector workers underpaid?" What we have clearly seen from the 1980s to the present is the stagnation of most people's wages, and a decrease once you add in the shifting of insurance from employer to employee. We have watched the decimation of the middle class as the profits of the corporate private sector and the financial sector have risen dramatically.

Have you heard of the Chilcot Inquiry? If you are in the U.S., the answer is likely "No". The Chilcot Inquiry - also known as "The Iraq Inquiry" - is the UK's investigation into the events that led to and followed from the invasion of Iraq. The Chair of the investigation is Sir John Chilcot who stated the purpose of the inquiry as follows:

"Our terms of reference are very broad, but the essential points, as set out by the Prime Minister and agreed by the House of Commons, are that this is an Inquiry by a committee of Privy Counsellors. It will consider the period from the summer of 2001 to the end of July 2009, embracing the run-up to the conflict in Iraq, the military action and its aftermath. We will therefore be considering the UK's involvement in Iraq, including the way decisions were made and actions taken, to establish, as accurately as possible, what happened and to identify the lessons that can be learned. Those lessons will help ensure that, if we face similar situations in future, the government of the day is best equipped to respond to those situations in the most effective manner in the best interests of the country."

However, it is true that many have served - willingly or not - under the belief they our protecting our "freedom" and "our way of life." I will not besmirch those sacrifices, nor will I be silent on the utterly shameful way that both the government and the people of the United States have met the needs of those who have served. We call them "heroes," but as a nation living with heroes is a more difficult task than remembering (once in a while) those who have died.

The craze of late has been that natural gas will be a primary solution to the energy problem in the United States. The environmental community has also been thrown this bone that natural gas is an attractive alternative because of lower CO2 emissions, and is less destructive than the devastation of mountain top mining. I recommend David Swanson's Daybreak: Undoing the Imperial Presidency and Forming a More Perfect Union without reservation. This book accomplishes two critical things. One, it clearly documents the power grab and crimes of the Bush administration. Two, it provides a field manual for a social movement to put the people (us) back within the balance of powers.

Things Falling Off the Table - Economy

In the heat of healthcare reform and the mobilization of radical shock troops, the economy has drifted with little public discussion. When it comes up, it is frequently within the context that "the worst is behind us;" "we're leveling off;" or "recovery is just around the corner." While I wish all of this was true, I am concerned that it is not. While I wish that the Obama administration were being more honest, I believe they are engaging in the same type of spin we became accustomed to under the Bush administration.

Across the country there is a vocal minority who are loudly protesting certain issues. We have the "birther" folks who think that Obama is not a natural born citizen of the United States. We have the "deathers" (including Sarah Palin) who apparently think the government is going to use health care reform to kill the old and disabled. Then we have the anti-healthcare reformers who have a bucketfull of confusion and fears about socialism, fascism, and losing their "choice" in healthcare. All seem to be being spurred on by corporate backed "astroturf" organizations and by a few unethical media mouths.

Why Do We Need Universal Healthcare?

Why do we need universal healthcare? Let me share a personal story.

First, I have health insurance through my employer. They chip in and I chip in, and both my partner and myself are covered by a major HMO. Like all insurance, each year for about the last 10 years, the premium and deductibles have gone up. Sometimes more than 10% in a year. This is pretty typical. However, folks should realize that 10% per year increase means that the cost of health insurance doubles in seven years.

On 7/27/09 Andrea Mitchell (MSNBC) interviewed Orin Hatch on healthcare reform. The full interview is available here. It is approximately 9 minutes long.)

I was stunned to hear Hatch saying he supported healthcare for those who deserve it. Mitchell did not ask him who that was (or who the undeserving were). I was immediately transported back to Reagan with his discussions of the "deserving poor." Who DOESN'T "really deserve" healthcare. I can't even believe that the Republicans are going to pull this one out again. The clip below from the interview is approximately 52 seconds. It includes the Hatch quote in context.

The U.S. and the world have major crises to address. There is the economy, resources, environment, and global warming. Each of these intersect in complex ways to create other massive problems: loss of jobs, failed crops, and war. And these in turn create other crises: mass migration and xenophobic responses, power grabs, destabilization of governments. Big problems all. This series of articles will focus on critical issues that fall off the table.

Are you pulling your hair out over health care "reform?" I know I am, and I don't think Washington - or Obama - are listening. The current plans being discussed have been projected to expand healthcare costs. As I stated in an earlier article:

The short version of all of this is that healthcare reform should dramatically reduce healthcare costs and SAVE us money - not cost us more. If the projection is that a plan will cost us more money, then we can rest assured that private industry is getting its pockets lined at public expense, and that the system created is not truly serving the needs of the people.

I don't know about you, but I am pulling my hair out at the absolute insanity in the politics of the healthcare "debate." I want a 'single payer" system that provides UNIVERSAL healthcare. I do not want a system that tweeks the edges so cover a FEW more people. As I see it there are three components to the healthcare issue:

1. Healthcare is not accessible to a growing portion of the population.
2. Healthcare in the United States is the most expensive in the world.
3. Costs (and profits) are out of control.

The protests which started over the election have to some extent shift to a more fundamental split in the ruling council. What the ultimate outcomes will be remain in question. What is clear is that hundreds of thousands of Iranians are in the streets challenging the fairness of the elections and the decision by the Supreme Leader. What is clear is that the Iranian government is responding to harshly, even brutally, quash the protests. What is not clear, and what is conveniently not being reported is the role of foreign nations in what is happening in Iran.

Hi All,

I am just touching base to give an update. The procedure went as smoothly as might have been hoped. The recovery has not gone quite as well as we might have hoped. The procedure has flared up the trigeminal neuralgia which makes sorting out some of the symptoms problematic. I still have pain and swelling from where the halo was mounted, and some ongoing drainage from one site. I am having decreased hearing in the left ear and some equilibrium issues. Nausea - in part likely due to the radiation and in part the equilibrium. Finally got some compazine for that so I can at least briefly get on the PC to send off some notes and check my email. There are pain issues, but I am managing them most of the time. Still fatigued as well.

I had a somewhat humorous / some what nerve wracking spell of "double hearing" - my left ear was "hearing" about 1/2 second behind the right. That has partially cleared - or the gap has gotten much closer to in-synch. Let me tell you - that was truly bizarre.

I had hoped to be back to relatively normal by today, but it looks like it may take a bit longer than that. It is hard to say what the longer term results will be. The increasing equilibrium problem is somewhat concerning, but may straighten out (no pun intended) with some time.Right now I am essentially doing nothing - kind of an enforced rest I guess. I can only read about 5 minutes at a time, same for TV. Bit boring.

I want to thank you for the supportive and encouraging notes you have sent - I have received them and warmed by them. It is my firm hope to be able to return to my contribution to the broader effort in the near future.

My gratitude and best wishes to you all.

The charge of "identity politics" has come up in relation to the nomination of Judge Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court. It has been an ugly attack with claims of Sotomayor's racism, belonging to the Hispanic version of the KKK, and that she is more concerned about issues of race than issues of law. She has even been labeled as "un-American." All of these are codes , and the real target is not Judge Sotomayor, it is to stimulate fear among a certain portion of the citizenry with the goal of moving them into the "Republican" camp. This is currently a camp whose leadership is apparently being battled out by Rush Limbaugh, Newt Gingrich, and Dick Cheney.

This is a heads up for those of you who may have a mortgage with Washington Mutual. Those mortgages are in the process of transition to Chase. I accidentally found this issue, and there was no warning from either Wamu or Chase. I discovered by checking my mortgage online that the payment date of my mortgage had been changed from the 6th of the month to the 1st of the month.

Since my mortgage is paid automatically from my account, this is a big deal. Since I get paid between the 1st and the 4th of the month depending on weekends and holidays, it is entirely possible that the automatic payment of my mortgage could overdraw my account. If this date change also effects people who mail in their payments, then if you are not paying attention, you could potentially be late on your payment.

The first tennis balls were made of leather that wrapped wool or fur around the ball with string. They date as far back as the early 11th century with no one credited for the invention.

The Bush years were a nightmare for the shredding of the Constitution and our legal protections. Not counting the Executive Signing Statements, a number of pieces of legislation were passed. The most publicized of these were the U.S.A.P.A.T.R.I.O.T Act (Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism) and the changes to the FISA (Foreign Intelligence Security Act). The so-called "Patriot Act" had nothing to do with patriotism, but the naming was a brilliant public relations move. The changes to FISA - which had been confined to non-citizens and national security only, was expanded to include citizens and to allow mass tapping of communication hubs.

Not only CAN we say "No" to torture, we MUST say "No" to torture. Much of the torture "debate" has focused around the policies, legitimation, and use of torture under the Bush Administration. President Obama has repeatedly stated that he thinks that torture does not reflect our values. Indeed, he has said the he "believes" that waterboarding is torture. However, since taking office, he has increasingly shifted his rhetoric to "soften" the issue of torture. He increasingly refers to "enhanced interrogation." In his press conference marking his first hundred days in office, he referred to torture as a "shortcut." This conceptual and linguistic shifting is more than worrisome - it is downright alarming.

There has been a lot of debate about the issue of torture in the wake of the release of the "torture memos" written during the Bush Administration. The memos, and ensuing reports, begin to open the curtain on the fact that there was a clear policy from the President and throughout the administration to utilize torture as a method of gaining intelligence information. Bill Moyers had Bruce Fein (Associate Deputy Attorney General under Reagan) and Mark Danner (journalist and the person who released the Red Cross reports on torture) discuss the implications of the Obama administration pursuing the issue.

This means that the underlying assumption is that both Arabs and Muslims are a single racial group.

Suggestions for a New Defense Strategy for Obama

Barack Obama has selected his National Security Team, but up in the air is how he will address a world where the projection of U.S. military force has cost positive regard and seemingly increased the danger level of instability and terrorism. Carl Conetta of Project on Defense Alternatives provides two insightful analyses that Obama, other decision-makers, and we, would do well to study.

Our current strategies have gotten us into a perilous position, and the politics of fear have fueled the fire. This has opened up a Pandora's box of issues from privatization of the military, to a blank check approach to defense. Clearly, these are not serving us in positive ways. The new administration will need to develop its own policies. The vested and gorging interests are now deeply embedded within the structure and operation of both national security and defense. They will be lobbying far and wide to protect their turf. It therefore becomes critical that citizens be informed and thinking deeply about these issues. These reports offer critical insights and critiques, and therefore are important sources for us.

From what I can determine from English translations of Iraqi news sources, the explanation does not lie there either.

(Only one President, Jimmy Carter, has spoken out on the injustice and inhumanity experienced by the Palestinians, and he waited for decades after he was out of office to speak out. Because of that he has faced criticism and censure.)

The New Trough is a Must Read

I highly recommend reading a new article by Naomi Klein in the 11/13/08 Rolling Stone - The New Trough (or here). At the heart of the story is the person selected to handle the $700 billion bailout - Reuben Jeffery III. Jeffery was the head of the Coalition Provisional Authority in Iraq under Paul Bremmer. Klein exposes the links between the approach to corporatizing Iraq and what is happening with our massive bailout of the financial industry.

As a followup article, I would suggest Amit Paley's article A Quiet Windfall For U.S. Banks (Wa. Post 11/10/08). It points out the little $140 billion windfall that Paulson has just handed over to the banking industry.

Dear Veterans,

Thank you veterans for your service to our country.

Thank you for the sacrifices made on our behalf, and for living with the life long effects of your service.

Thank you to those veterans who stand up and speak out to keep our nation on the path, and continue the fight against the abusive use of U.S. military force.

Thank you soldiers of conscience.

Thank you Winter Soldiers.

Thank you for fighting for this nation when you left the uniform behind.

My sincere thanks to the many of you for being my friends and moral support., and for covering my back when the arrows of hatred and repression fly.

I promise you that I will always continue the struggle to hold our nation to its highest ideals, and to fight for the recognition and support you need and deserve for the sacrifices you have made in our name.

Can a Campaign Become a Movement, or at Least an Engaged Citizenry?

The election of Barack Obama as the next President of the United States raises the hopes of many (in the U.S. and internationally) for a change in course from unilateralism to cooperation; from concentration of power and economic resources in the hands of the few to a more equitable balance; from continued erosion of Constitutional protections and imbalance to justice; from more than a generation of "me" to a reinvigorating of "we." A lot of hope. However the true question is whether a citizenry that actively engaged for a campaign will remain engaged for the changes that must happen.

Barack Obama is the President Elect of the United States. This is a historic moment for the United States, but it does not mean that the problems of our past and present have ended.

This is an exceptional time. I admit that while I watched the returns, and then the projected win for Obama, I did so with tears and a lump in my throat. I refused to relax until McCain have presented what was an exceptional concession speech, and Obama gave his acceptance speech.

Who IS a 'Real American?'

Special note: I too have problems with claiming that those in the United States are "Americans" as it disenfrachises those who live in Canada and Mexico - North Americans; those who live in Central America, and those who live in South America. "Americans" all! In the context of this article, I will use "America" and "American" in their common (and incorrect) usage.

I don't know about you, but I have had it with the ever narrowing circle of who is a "real American." For sure this is not something new. We have seen it over and over in U.S. history, and always it has been tremendously destructive. The bombardment of who is not a "real" American has been the bread and butter of the Republican campaigns. However, the effects of it will last long after November 4, 2008.

McCain has been trying a last ditch attempt to link Obama to "terrorsts" with the latest tempest in a teapot regarding Rashid Khalidi. Not only is Khalidi not a member or spokesperson for the PLO (Palestine Liberation Organization), but the institute he helped found - The Center for Palestine Research and Studies, has been funded by the Rockefeller Foundation and National Endowment for Democracy (SourceWatch), but also by a group which McCain chairs - The International Republican Institute.

Popular rhetoric has consistently claimed that the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan was (is) the "good war." Even now, we hear that the "real fight" in the "war on terrorism" is Afghanistan, and that the U.S. needs to finish the job of getting bin Laden. While the strategies vary, both McCain and Obama continue to ring the bin Laden bell. I have argued that Afghanistan has never been the good war, and now we may find ourselves in another war - with Pakistan - using the justification of bin Laden.

Fires are harder to put out than they are to start. The constant meme out of the McCain campaign has been that Obama is a Muslim, hates the United States, is a person to be afraid of, and now that he is a terrorist. It has put John McCain in the unenviable political position of having to defend the character of the man he is running against. However, that is unlikely to do anything to put out the fire that has been started.

With the current economic crisis which seems to be spreading across the world we are dealing with far more than a "subprime" crisis, or an attempt to "quarantine "toxic debt." There is a much bigger avalanche waiting to come tumbling down. Namely the derivatives market now estimated to be over $1 quadrillion (that is 1,000 trillion) in global derivatives holdings. That makes the current $700 billion bailout look like less than a drop in a very large bucket.

Both McCain and Palin are claiming they are "mavericks." It is an interesting claim - particularly from a person from the southwestern United States (McCain is one of the Senators from Arizona). I am sure, that there is an assumption that "maverick" means "independent" or "not conforming to the rules," but that is usually applied as an adjective - not a noun. "Maverick" more typically, and particularly in the southwest, is a calf that has become separated from its mother and becomes the property of the first person to "brand" it.

The Bush administration takes a loss (for now) on it challenge of the Presidential Records Act. The administration was sued by Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) for trying to narrow the definition of what records Dick Cheney needs to reveal. The administration wanted to narrow the records to those from the Vice President's Office. However, a federal judge ruled that a broader range of records must be preserved. The suit arose out of Cheney's claim that the Vice President's office is a separate hinterland of government that is not part of either the executive or legislative branch of government.

Questions, hundreds of questions, still remain. Terrorism, and the war on it have grown - not shrunk. Instead, many more shattered lives have been thrown into the maw of revenge and greed.

Politics and Women's Right to Choose

The nomination of ardent "pro life" supporter Sarah Palin to the McCain ticket has brought the issue of "pro life" versus "pro choice" to front and center. It is about an issue that has morphed and been a political tool for forty years.

Palin: A Social Conservative's Dream

By Rowan Wolf

Sarah Palin seems like a good choice for social conservatives. She is vehemently anti-abortion, favors teaching creationism, is staunchly against same-sex relationship recognition and benefits. She is strongly in favor of the death penalty and unfettered gun ownership, wants to open ANWR to oil drilling, and does not support energy alternatives to oil and natural gas.

In short, she largely reinforces McCain's social stances. I would not consider her a "feminist" though her allusions to Ferarro and Clinton imply that she is. I imagine women will not be voting for her "just because she's a woman." If the choice was made to attract Hillary supporters, it is not likely to succeed because of Palin's stance on the issues.

The choice indicates that the "change" McCain represents is to play to a social and politically conservative base.

It is troubling that after McCain's emphasis on the importance of experience in the Presidency, that he would choose someone with virtually no significant national or international experience. If a self-described "hockey mom" with a BS in journalism, and two years as a Governor, is ready to be President of the United States, then that opens up the field significantly.

Has you ever wondered why it is that when oil prices go up it is almost immediately reflected in the cost of fuel, but when oil prices go down we are told "It will take a while" to be reflected at the pump?

To keep it simple. The U.S. uses about 10 million barrels of gasoline a day*, or roughly 420 million gallons of gasoline. For every penny over cost that is roughly $4.2 million in profit a day.

Still wonder why gas prices are slow to come down?

While generally operating at a national level, the process has also been utilized at a regional level. For example, the deliberate attack during the Asian market collapse. As I have watched the unraveling of the global economy, I have wondered if the scheme has not moved to a global level.

Another Earth Day rolls around and the planet is heading towards environmental catastrophe. Seems like one day a year is not enough to counter 364 days a year of destruction. Earth ... that ungrateful snob .. just doesn't recognize the wholeheartedness of our regard. Must say I am a bit despondent over the state of the planet. I know, that more people are waking up, but they are also still hypnotized by the propaganda - like biofuels and a "sustainability" that allows increasing industrial and consumer growth every year.

Perhaps on this Earth Day we should encourage thought and meditation. Perhaps we should focus on sending healing energy to our home. Perhap[s we should visualize a planet that is lush and healthy and where the human rodents really do love their Mother.

It is pretty clear that there needs to be a change of heart and mind, because changing direction seems impossible without it.

So this Earth Day, let's encourage people to connect to the earth beneath their feet (under the cement); the wind upon their faces, and the moss growing through the crack in the sidewalk. Let's encourage people to look for those examples of the unrelenting will towards life that are all around us.

Get Ready for Oil Prices to Surge - Updated

Get ready for oil prices to surge. I know that you think that they are already surging. However, two bits of news are likely to drive them higher, faster. The most immediate factor is the shutdown of Scotland's only refinery. The shutdown is occurring ahead of a potential labor strike. The shutdown will take most of the North Sea oil offline.

The second, longer term, news is that the Saudi's are planning on not adding additional oil production capacity after 2009. Apparently, this is to see what happens to demands in the face of biofuels.

Both of these events are likely to blow the lid off of oil prices - at least for a while.

UPDATE You heard it first here. While great prescience was not needed for the prediction, I did get it right on both counts. This morning's BBC headline runs: Oil rises to yet another record: "Oil prices in London and New York have hit fresh record highs on the risk of supply disruptions and signs that Opec is unwilling to raise output further."

Amazingly, the Bush administration seems determined to continue its environmentally destructive path to the bitter end. The National Parks Service in Yellowstone has already sent 1,200 buffalo from the last free herd to the slaughterhouse. They are now preparing to round up calves and send them to slaughter as well. Speak out against this at NRDC.

They are also trying to hand over almost 6 million acres of Idaho forest to the timber, mining, and oil industries. They are doing this by removing Roadless Rule protecttions. You can let them know your thoughts through Earthjustice.

Why the Hell are we bombing Somalia? Purportedly to take out a "known al-Qaeda terrorist". The U.S. attack was confirmed by Bryan Whitman, a spokesman for the Pentagon. According to an AFP report, Dhoble "is home to thousands of refugees who fled clashes in Mogadishu." The U.S., however, identifies it as an "Islamist" town.

Kucinich Withdraws from Campaign

My preferred Presidential candidate, Dennis Kucinich, announced the end on his Presidential campaign today. I was not really surprised after his being totally shut out of corporate media coverage - no debates and no news. There is no way to even influence the discussion if there is a total shutout on the message. That silencing is yet another manifestation of the loss of our democracy as it was backed by both a state Supreme Court (Nevada), and the FCC.

However, Kucinich is facing another attack. In an email two days before announcing his decision he requested help with funding his Congressional race. He reported that a massive influx of corporate funds into the race in his district was threatening to remove him from Congress as well.

The combination of the two issues sealed his decision to withdraw from the Presidential campaign. Under the circumstances, I sadly agree. I also believe that it is critical to not lose his voice and leadership from the United States Congress. If you have a few bucks to spare, or can offer some other form of support, I encourage you to contribute to his Congressional campaign at http://kucinich.us/.

If you already contributed to his Presidential campaign, you may still contribute to his Congressional campaign. The monies are separate.

Keep up the fight Dennis!

While the price of gasoline is the most direct visible aspect for individuals, it is certainly not the only one. Well the digital phase-in starts in February 2008. While many may not notice the phasing out of analog, some certainly will. At the top of the list will be those with older cellphones, and those with Onstar systems from 2005 and before. The shut down of the analog cell phone system will impact an estimated 1 million customers, and the number impacted by General Motor's OnStar conversion are not known. TeleAid (Mercedes) and Lexus Link are also impacted and the systems are generally not upgradable. Various home security systems are also going to be cut off. The digital television switch is to happen in February 2009. I somehow doubt it is going to be a raving success.

Here is the comment I posted:
I urge the Commission to not expand the media ownership rules any further. The proposed change to limit this additional ownership "only in major markets" means a loss of media and information diversity for almost half of the population of the United States. We need ownership diversity to have a broader spectrum of information and perspective. There are also critical community needs that are not met when the concentration of media becomes too high. Please vote against this proposal.

Xylitol Poisonous For Dogs

This is for the dog lovers and the dog people in your life. Xylitol, a sweetener increasingly used in chewing gum, candy, cookies, and even toothpaste, is potentially fatal to dogs. While humans process only a small percentage of xylitol, it hits dogs like a sledge hammer. You may read this article at the American Veterinary Medicine Association.

"People only absorb a certain percentage of xylitol," she said. "The human body doesn't even notice it. However, in dogs, xylitol triggers significant insulin release, which drops the blood sugar. It is definitely a species difference. People aren't in danger from sugar-free gum containing xylitol; dogs are." ... "This is the tip of the iceberg now," she said. "Anything that is sugar-free could potentially have substituted xylitol for the original sweetener." ... One dog in the study that had to be euthanized because of its condition had eaten four large, chocolate-frosted muffins that contained about 1 pound of xylitol.

"They use it like sugar," Dr. Gwaltney-Brant said. "Baked goods can easily contain a large amount of xylitol."
...
"Liver failure is one of our main concerns when dogs get into this," she said. "The low blood sugar we can deal with. But the liver damage, even with aggressive treatment, can make it difficult to save these animals."

For more information, a copy of the study, "Acute hepatic failure and coagulopathy associated with xylitol ingestion in eight dogs," or an interview with author Dr. Sharon Gwaltney-Brant, contact David Kirkpatrick at 847-285-6782.

In an unrelated development, Syrian officials said antiaircraft batteries fired on Israeli military planes that entered Syrian airspace near the border with Turkey overnight Wednesday. There were conflicting reports about whether the Israeli aircraft fired at targets inside Syria or dropped ammunition. There were no reports of damage or injury.

Syrian officials said the country's leaders were "seriously considering" an appropriate response. The Israeli military would neither confirm nor deny the incident.

For some it is no surprise that the illegal surveillance of U.S. citizens began prior to September 2001. The Bush administration went into office with the plan to "transform" the power of the president with its attempts to implement the "unitary executive." It was clear from the start with the refusal to release past presidential records as required by law, and then the refusal to obey a court order to release information regarding Cheney's energy "advisors." While the ICE Campaign [In Case of Emergency] started in 2004 with an idea by Bob Brotchie of the East Anglian Ambulance service, it was picked up by Vodaphone in 2005 (Urban Legends), it is an excellent idea. In essence, for those with mobile phones it entails making an entry (ICE) for those who should be contacted in case of emergency (ICE1, ICE2, etc). Some newer cell phones allow one to create "groups" for your phone numbers. You could make an ICE group and list those you want contacted. Such a designation would allow emergency service personnel to contact someone quickly if you were unable to provide that information.

Thanks Bill for sending this along.

On September 7th, I wrote about the arctic melt. More specifically, the concern is regarding the melting of the Greenland ice sheet. What scientists now believe is that condition of the Greenland ice sheet has been pivotal in dramatic climatic changes throughout at least the known climate shifts of Earth's history. Words such as "shocked" and "stunned" are cropping up in corporate media reports regarding the current disappearance of the ice in Greenland.

The news from the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is that we just lost another 50 years in the global warming catastrophe. The melt is accelerating beyond any projections, and the current amount of CO2 in the atmosphere will continue its impact for the next 20 to 30 years.

September 1, 2007 marks the 20 year anniversary of an action of conscience and resistance by Vietnam War veteran S. Brian Willson. On September 1, 1987, Brian Willson placed himself on the tracks of a naval train out of Concord, California. The train was carrying bombs and munitions headed to Central America. The train refused to stop; running over Brian Willson severing both of his legs.

The International Forum on Globalization has released a short video on the false solution of going "green" while maintaining or increasing consumption. It does an excellent job of addressing a number of myths.

A lot has been written about the increasing role of "military contractors" in Iraq. Blackwater, CACI, and others have made headlines. So many contractors are being used by both the U.S. military and intelligence branches that Amnesty USA (5/23/06) claimed that the U.S. was "outsourcing the war on terror."

While it is hard to believe, Gonzales is resigning. Purportedly he turned in his resignation letter on Friday, and is expected to make an announcement today.

What To Do With an Administration that Refuses To Follow the Law?

What do you do with an administration that refuses to follow the law? Apparently not a damn thing. We have a situation where the Constitutional balance of powers have been disrupted, and where the opposition party cannot even rally all of its own members - much less a majority - to institute its responsibility of checks and balances. Instead, we have an administration which has challenged constraints since its first day in office, which now blatantly states that it will not recognize any constraints on its actions. What country is this?

This is a review and recommendation of Live from Jordan: Letters Home from My Journey Through the Middle East by Benjamin Orbach. Orbach, at the time an American grad student, traveled to Jordan on the eve of the invasion of Iraq. The book chronicles his journey and insights.
