A True Gift for Veterans - Peace

The U.S. is deeply embedded in the mythology of the heroism of the warrior culture. There is a lot of rhetoric about the courage and sacrifice of the those who have fought (versus those who have served) for our "freedom." Never is that "freedom" defined. However, it is true that many have served - willingly or not - under the belief they our protecting our "freedom" and "our way of life." I will not besmirch those sacrifices, nor will I be silent on the utterly shameful way that both the government and the people of the United States have met the needs of those who have served. We call them "heroes," but as a nation living with heroes is a more difficult task than remembering (once in a while) those who have died.

Current CENTCOM Chief David Petraeus (of Dutch, not Greek, descent) is no neophyte at the game of political intrigue. With the US military increasingly corrupted by its duty to advance and defend US imperialism's agenda worldwide, careerism and opportunism--"executive style"-- are fast becoming rampant throughout the ranks of the US military.

For all those veterans (and those who care about them) who have Gulf War Syndrome (now called "illness') it has been determined it is not in your head. Here are a couple of articles and a link to the full report [CNN, American Legion -- report].

Of course, most of us already knew this, and many have fought the DoD and VA over it, and they denied and lied for over a decade. FINALLY, they can't pretend Gulf War Syndrome isn't real anymore.

Dear Veterans,

Thank you veterans for your service to our country.

Thank you for the sacrifices made on our behalf, and for living with the life long effects of your service.

Thank you to those veterans who stand up and speak out to keep our nation on the path, and continue the fight against the abusive use of U.S. military force.

Thank you soldiers of conscience.

Thank you Winter Soldiers.

Thank you for fighting for this nation when you left the uniform behind.

My sincere thanks to the many of you for being my friends and moral support., and for covering my back when the arrows of hatred and repression fly.

I promise you that I will always continue the struggle to hold our nation to its highest ideals, and to fight for the recognition and support you need and deserve for the sacrifices you have made in our name.

In the struggle,

I was taken aback to receive a package from New Almaden, California nearly a month ago. I didn't know where the town was nor at that time, anyone there. Even more astounding was the discovery that the package contained Mary Tillman's book "Boots On The Ground By Dusk", her personal account of her son Pat's death and its impact on the Tillman family. As I opened the book and read Mary's inscription and her enclosed card, I was flooded with memories of working closely, in 2006,

Acinetobacter Baumanni: We Need to Know

In March of 2007, I wrote The Beginning of a MDR Epidemic? which explored the potential for an epidemic of Acinetobacter Baumannii (AB) from troops wounded in Iraq (or Afghanistan). In summation, AB is a virulent multi-drug resistant (MDR) bacteria which has become increasingly common in troops (and civilians) treated in field hospitals in Iraq. It spread to military hospital in Landstuhl, Germany, and then to Walter Reed. I had a number of questions at the time I wrote that article, and virtually none of them have been answered. However, my concern that AB would spread to civilian hospitals is being confirmed.

The problems that veterans face returning to civilian society have always been there. I don't think one can go through the death and destruction of war (either as soldiers or as civilians with the war zone) and remain unchanged. War is a horror. Now we have a new wave of those who have served (and are still serving) the wills of the those who rule, purportedly within the best interests of the nation. Regardless of how one feels about war, and this war in particular, the situation of these service members is beyond atrocious. It is criminal.

One of the things that has become increasingly evident is that private "security" firms are critical to the Bush "war on terrorism." Given the news of private security and militia in Iraq, my ears perked at the news that bodyguards had "responded" to a suicide bombing in northern Afghanistan (Baghlan) and over 50 people were killed.

Peter Beaumont of the Guardian has an article that everyone should read - "Fatigue cripples US army in Iraq." It is a sad statement on those who planned and now direct the deployment of our troops. Human Lives - Collateral Damage to A Political Calculus

The Democrats caved in and supported the supplemental occupation funding demanded by the Bush Cabal. The arguments apparently being that they a) didn't have the votes to overcome a veto; b) they didn't want to be blamed for the growing death and chaos; c) the belief this keeps Iraq the Republican's adventure; d) perhaps - because the PSAs haven't been signed yet. Regardless, the considerations were political - not moral - not responsive to the mandate that the November elections sent. The arguments now are that they can revisit the funding issue in September - 4 months from now - 122 days from June 1 to September 31. Given a rough average death toll of five US troops and 50 Iraqi civilians, that makes a low estimate of 6710 (610 US troops, 6100 Iraqi civilians) deaths for buckling on the funding.

George Bush told us that the "War on Terrorism" would be a "generational" war. It seems clear that means "war without end" which brings to mind George Orwell's 1984. (Of course, there are a lot of things about the Bush cabal does that makes Orwell's book look down right prophetic.) To fight the war without end would normally take a very large fighting force, but long before Rumsfeld's lean, mean, high tech vision, the Pentagon has been deeply involved in creating future "warfighters."

The Mental Health Advisory Team (MHAT) IV Operation Iraqi Freedom 05-07 Final Report (17 November 2006) was released to the public this week. It is a damning report. It sites a number of mental health problems among the troops in Iraq, which are increased by the number, length, and frequency of deployments. Along with mental health issues, the MHAT found there were considerable ethical behavior concerns. General Patreaus reports being "very concerned" by the findings, and that we need to "make sure that folks remember that that's (not dropping to the level of the enemy) a foundation for our moral compass."

Bush has decided to send and additional 8,200 troops in Afghanistan (3500) and Iraq (4700). This is in addition to the 21,500 troop "surge." I believe it is also in addition to Petraeus' call for 2200 more MP's and 7,000 additional support staff (NY Times). It is estimated that a "build up" will be needed into 2008. Bush has also requested another $3.2 billion in emergency funds for Iraq.

Everyone is expecting for Bush's "new" strategy in Iraq to be a "surge" in the number of troops deployed there (CSM, BBC). While the "surge" plan is likely to not be popular on either side of the aisle, the plan to increase the size of the military seems to have more bipartisan support.

Bush has changed direction on Iraq. He has moved from supporting a gradual withdrawal of U.S. troops, to recommitting himself to full engagement. Bush is on the campaign (money) trail, and rejecting any form of withdrawal from Iraq. Of course, this means more U.S. troops will be needed, so he has authorized the Marines to start calling up the IRR (Individual Ready Reserve). Bush's recommitment to Iraq, comes as people finally realize that Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11/01, or al Qaeda.

How The Military Deals With Rape

Robin Wilde is a pseudonym. This woman is still serving and does not wish to jeopardize her career any further. She shared her story as a comment on the Jennifer Dyer story, and I asked her permission to post it where folks are more likely to see it. She agreed. I wish her story was an anomaly, and that the military was addressing this issue more significantly. It's not, and they aren't. It is clear that the people will have to shame them into finally taking significant action to stop rape in the military, and deal with victims humanely. Rowan Wolf

I have found that coming forward with rape allegations costs my career. Do we have any rights? I am being retaliated against by my old commander who refused to take issue with me being raped. Instead he called me AWOL, knocked me down to an E-1 from an E-4, transferred me to inactive reserves under a general under honorable conditions. That was great, (not really, since all I wanted was a transfer and he refused 4 requests) until I was to be activated. Now that I was officially an E-1, I am supposed to go through this again? So I rejoin the guard, my new commander reinstates my rank after hearing my story. I join ROTC because I want to be an officer and help other soldiers from experiencing what I have experienced. I have a great job and receive stellar performance reviews.

Dear Sirs:

As I am certain you are all aware, my husband, Sgt. Kevin Benderman, was sentenced to 15 months confinement, loss of rank, forfeiture of pay and a dishonorable discharge last week, the charge being "Missing Movement" or failure to get on a plane. In actuality, the charge was "filing a Conscientious Objector packet against the recommendation of his commander, who had no intention of allowing my husband to follow his conscience, and therefore serving notice to the rest of our military that they should not follow suit." I need to assure you that I do not make this statement out of anger, but rather by simply pointing to the facts. Not only did my husband's commander address this in a public comment to the media, the prosecutor used this in his closing statements, and the military representative was adamant about this in his public comments to the media immediately following my husband's court martial.

On June 12th 1987, I was a junior in High School with a mindset of having a military career, when Ronald Reagan gave a speech at the Reichstag Gate of the Berlin Wall. The speech was delivered to the people of West Berlin but it was made audible on the East side of the Berlin Wall as well. There were 2,073 words in his speech but the only words anyone ever remembers are these 16 words, with special emphasis on the last 6, when the former Hollywood Cowboy boldly said, "Come here to this gate!! Mr. Gorbachev, open this gate!! Mr. Gorbachev, Tear down this Wall!!!" Being older and wiser, I now view those words, which many still believe brought freedom to the world and united the two European theatres, East and West, while also ending the Cold War, as simply being the Best Acting Performance of Ronald Reagan's career.

There is an informative article by Emily Baker on mytexas.com about these bonuses. She notes that the bonuses for "high-priority military occupational specialties or jobs, such as combat arms jobs" has gone from $7,000 to $9,000 in August to $10,000 to $14,000 last week. Likewise, three year active duty bonuses went from about $7,000, to $15,000, to $17,000, to $20,000 last week. The Army also increased its educational bonus to $8000 for those enrolling in Officers Candidate School. The re-enlistment bonuses range from $20,000 to $40,000 for the Army. For the Marines, they use (MULTIPLIER) X (BASE PAY) X (NUMBER OF YEARS RE-ENLISTING) where the muiltiplier is tied to to "zone" (which I think is similar to demand job and period of enlistment). As I read the requirements, it appears that if one does not complete the contract that the bonus must be repaid. I wonder if that includes leaving the service due to injury, death, or unfitness. These are still less than the mercenaries ("private contractors") that are being hired. Maybe that is what is driving the potentially $30 Billion sale of bunker buster bombs to Israel.
